Visual object localisation in space. Interaction of retinal, eye position, vestibular and neck proprioceptive information.

Perceptual updating of the location of visual targets in space after intervening eye, head or trunk movements requires an interaction between several afferent signals (visual, oculomotor efference copy, vestibular, proprioceptive). The nature of the interaction is still a matter of debate. To address this problem, we presented subjects (n=6) in the dark with a target (light spot) at various horizontal eccentricities (up to +/-20 degrees ) relative to the initially determined subjective straight-ahead direction (SSA). After a memory period of 12 s in complete darkness, the target reappeared at

Apnoea of prematurity and arousal from sleep.

The incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has been found to be consistently higher in preterm and low birth weight infants than in infants born at term and this increase is inversely related to gestational age. The incidence and severity of apnoea of prematurity, are also inversely related to gestational age. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a neonatal history of apnoea/bradycardia affected the maturation of arousal responses. Twenty-five premature infants were studied. A perinatal risk score was determined for each infant and infants were divided into those with a n

Effects of amphetamine and modafinil on the sleep/wake cycle during experimental hypersomnia induced by sleep deprivation in the cat.

Modafinil is a newly discovered waking substance now being used in the treatment of hypersomnia and narcolepsy. We have shown previously in the cat that, unlike amphetamine, modafinil induces long-lasting wakefulness (W) without behavioral excitation and subsequent sleep rebound, and that its waking effect does not depend on endogenous catecholamines. To further characterize the awakening properties of modafinil and current psychostimulants in experimental models of hypersomnia, we examined the effect of oral administration of placebo, modafinil (5 mg kg-1) or amphetamine (1 mg kg-1) on the sl

Vestibular function in children with the CHARGE association.

BACKGROUND: Histopathological examinations and computed tomographic scans of the temporal bone in patients with the CHARGE association (a malformative syndrome that includes coloboma, heart disease, choanal atresia, retarded development, genital hypoplasia, and ear anomalies, including hypoplasia of the external ear and hearing loss) have shown an absence of semicircular canals and a Mondini form of cochlear dysplasia. Until recently, no information was available concerning a possible loss of vestibular function, which could be a factor in retarded posturomotor development. To our knowledge, t

Identification of carbonic anhydrase activity in bullfrog olfactory receptor neurons: histochemical localization and role in CO2 chemoreception.

The objectives of this study were to determine: (1) the frequency and distribution of carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity in the bullfrog nasal cavities, and (2) whether inhibition of nasal CA affects the olfactory receptor response to CO2 or other odorants. It was found, using Hansson's staining technique, that some olfactory receptor neurons exhibited CA activity and that these CA-positive receptors were distributed throughout the nasal cavity with peak densities in the dorsal and ventral sensory epithelial regions. To test for the role of CA in olfactory transduction, electro-olfacto-grams (EO

Familial cortical myoclonic tremor as a unique form of cortical reflex myoclonus.

Previously it was reported that some patients with tremor had the same electrophysiological findings as those seen in patients with cortical reflex myoclonus, and consequently the tremor was named "cortical tremor." In the present study, we examined six patients from three families with cortical tremor of relatively late onset. The inheritance pattern of cortical tremor was compatible with autosomal dominant trait. Those patients had relatively rhythmic involuntary movements (tremor) in the distal upper and lower limbs, especially during posture and/or fine movements. There was no cerebellar a

Ocular motor consequences of damage to the abducens nucleus area in humans.

A patient with a complete unilateral conjugate gaze paralysis caused by a small lesion affecting the region of the right abducens nucleus, documented by magnetic resonance imaging, is reported. Eye movements were quantitatively evaluated using electro-oculography. A gaze-evoked nystagmus to the contralateral side and impairment of smooth pursuit and vestibular ocular reflex in the contralateral hemifield of movements were found. The differential diagnosis of conjugate gaze paralysis and the additional ocular motor abnormalities are interpreted in light of clinical and experimental findings.

[Congenital nystagmus in the ophthalmologic automobile driving fitness verdict].

BACKGROUND: A driver with congenital nystagmus (CN) is supposed to have a certain minimum visual acuity and a minimum velocity of reading, with the head directed straight ahead or 10 degrees laterally. The ability to perform different oculomotor tasks depends, however, on individual properties of nystagmus and compensatory mechanisms, as is demonstrated in 4 cases. METHODS: Detailed electrooculographic (EOG) recordings were performed in 4 CN patients, in addition to the examination of visual functions. RESULTS: The visual acuity of patient 1 is sufficient (0.6 on both eyes), yet his retinal

Saccadic lateropulsion in Wallenberg's syndrome may be caused by a functional lesion of the fastigial nucleus.

One of the clinical oculomotor hallmarks of lateral medullary infarction (Wallenberg's syndrome) is the so-called saccadic lateropulsion. In man and in animals, cerebellar lesions lead to dysmetric saccades and underline the importance of cerebellar control on saccadic accuracy. In order to study the lesion site responsible for saccadic lateropulsion we prospectively examined 12 patients with Wallenberg's syndrome who did not show a cerebellar lesion on CT or MRI. All patients consistently showed hypermetric saccades to the ipsilateral side and hypometric contralateral saccades comparable with

Tracking with a restricted field of view: performance and eye-head coordination aspects.

Vision through a restricted field of view (RFOV) is becoming increasingly common in aviation with the use of helmet mounted displays. Our first experiment investigated the influence of a narrow (20 degrees) binocular RFOV on performance during head-free visuo-manual tracking of a wide range (+/- 85 degrees) horizontally moving target. Second, the effects of two levels of RFOV (20 degrees, 70 degrees) on a similar tracking task presented with various eccentricities were compared to full field of view (FOV). Eye and head movement around the yaw axis were recorded and analyzed versus head-free vi

Electroencephalographic activity related to palatal myoclonus in REM sleep.

Polysomnography, including electroencephalography, electromyography and electro-oculography was performed in three patients with palatal myoclonus (PM). The amplitude of the myoclonus decreased during sleep. The frequency did not change during non-REM sleep, but increased during REM sleep in two patients. Ocular myoclonus synchronized with PM disappeared during deep sleep stages in two patients and reappeared during REM sleep in one of them. In the other patient, ocular myoclonus was noted only in REM sleep, being absent even when the patient was awake. All patients showed episodic EEG activit

Electroencephalographic abnormalities in human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I-associated myelopathy.

Thirty-six patients with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-associated myelopathy were studied by electroencephalogram. Twenty-two of 36 patients showed mild to moderate electroencephalographic abnormalities, ranging from poor organization or slowing of the background activity to theta bursts and/or spikes. None of these abnormalities were considered specific for HTLV-I-associated myelopathy. These electroencephalographic abnormalities had no apparent relationship to duration or severity of illness, nor to HTLV-I antibody titers in the cerebrospinal fluid. We document electroencep

Ophthalmoplegia plus, an electro-oculographic study.

To find out whether the central structures governing conjugate eye movements are affected in ophthalmoplegia plus (OP), we conducted an electro-oculographic study in 6 patients suffering from OP with varying degrees of extraocular involvement and with mitochondrial changes in the skeletal musculature. All the patients presented alterations of the smooth pursuit and saccadic movements, of optokinetic nystagmus as well as of the vestibular reflexes and of visuovestibular interaction, thus confirming impairment of the central oculomotor structures and particularly of those of the archicerebellum

Bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia due to hydrocephalus: a case report.

We report a case of bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia due to hydrocephalus associated with Arnold-Chiari malformation. The bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia in this case was probably caused by brain stem displacement due to hydrocephalus. This patient was considered to have "arrested" hydrocephalus on the basis of the clinical and computed tomographic findings and the results of the continuous intraventricular pressure monitoring. However, the bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia gradually improved after ventriculoperitoneal shunting.

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia. II. Pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus, and vestibulo-ocular reflex.

Smooth pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were studied in four patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (two with bilateral and two with unilateral lesions). Horizontal smooth pursuit by an adducting eye on the side of a medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) lesion was normal in three of four patients; vertical pursuit was abnormal in all four. The horizontal VOR gain of slow components made by an adducting eye on the side of an MLF lesion was normal in all four patients. The vertical VOR gain was decreased in the two patients tested. It is concluded th
