High prevalence of same-sex twins in patients with cloacal exstrophy: Support for embryological association with monozygotic twinning.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have hypothesized that cloacal exstrophy may be caused by errors early in embryological development related to monozygotic twinning. This study reports the prevalence of twins in a large cohort of patients with cloacal exstrophy. METHODS: Patients with cloacal exstrophy treated 1974-2015 were reviewed for reports of multiple gestation or conjoined twinning. The genetic sex of the patient and their twin, and any mention of anomaly in the twin were recorded. Neither placental exam nor genetic testing results were available to definitively determine zygosity. RESULTS:

A case of annular pancreas with Wirsung's duct encircling the duodenum: embryological hypothesis based on cholangiopancreatographic and immunohistochemical findings.

We present a resected case of annular pancreas in which Wirsung's duct encircled the duodenum and continued directly to the main pancreatic duct in the body and tail. Furthermore, Wirsung's duct coursed along the right side of the lower bile duct near the major duodenal papilla. Histologically, the islets of Langerhans in the annular pancreas were irregular in shape and were characterized by a striking abundance of pancreatic polypeptide (PP)-positive cells. The PP-rich area that encircled the duodenum was fused with the PP-poor area in the head of the pancreas. The following embryological hyp

Right Sided Sigmoid Colon and Redundant Loop of Descending Colon with Its Embryological Correlation and Clinical Significance.

Anatomical variations of colon are mostly developmental and can lead to variety of acute and chronic pathological conditions. So it becomes important to recognize and understand the importance of clinical implications of such anomalies to benefit surgeons, clinical geneticists and research community. We describe two cases of right sided sigmoid colon and long descending colon which had two segments: vertical and horizontal. The mesentery of ascending and descending colon was retained. This mesentery along with the mesentery of transverse colon was continuous with the mesentery of small intesti

Congenital upper eyelid coloboma: embryologic, nomenclatorial, nosologic, etiologic, pathogenetic, epidemiologic, clinical, and management perspectives.

PURPOSE: To review the recent literature and describe the authors' experience with congenital upper eyelid coloboma. METHODS: In this review, we will summarize the embryologic and etiopathogenetic bases of congenital upper eyelid coloboma, and study the published clinical reports. We will also attempt to briefly shed some light on the rarer syndromic curiosities associated with upper eyelid coloboma. RESULTS: Congenital upper eyelid colobomas are one of the few nontraumatic oculoplastic emergencies that may occasionally present in the first few days of life with a corneal ulcer and may even

Unilateral duplication of the parotid duct, its embryological basis and clinical significance: a rare cadaveric case report.

The parotid gland is the largest salivary gland in humans, and produces mainly serous secretions. The secretion of this gland reaches the oral cavity through single parotid duct (Stensen's duct). The parotid duct begins at the anterior border of the gland, crosses the masseter, and then pierces the buccinator and open the mouth. The present study reports a rare variation of a unilateral double parotid duct that was observed in the right side of the face of a 75-year-old male cadaver during dissection. The embryological basis of this variation can be explained as follows. A sprout originates fr

Single arterial trunk arising from the aortic arch with aortic coarctation. Report of a case. Embryological considerations.

Abnormalities of the aortic arch occur mainly due to an abnormal development of the fourth aortic arch in the first 12 weeks of fetal life. These abnormalities may be asymptomatic for a long period, or can develop clinically when vascular rings surround the trachea and esophagus and cause tracheal and/or esophageal obstruction. We present the case of a full-term newborn baby, male. The pregnancy had no medical surveillance from a family physician or an obstetrical. After five days of age, the infant died due to severe malformations, incompatible with life, respectively due to single arterial t

Optimal plane for nerve sparing total mesorectal excision, immunohistological study and 3D reconstruction: an embryological study.

AIM: Genito-urinary complications are frequent after rectal surgery and are often due to nerve damage. The relationship between the pelvic nerves and surgical planes are unclear. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the inferior hypogastric plexus and the fascia of the lateral pelvic wall and between Denonvilliers' fascia and the efferent branches of the inferior hypogastric plexus. METHOD: Computer-assisted anatomical dissection was used. Serial histological sections were made from six human foetuses and a male adult. Sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosi

Atrioventricular septal defect with an imperforate right-sided component of the common atrioventricular valve: anatomic and embryologic considerations.

We describe an atypical case of an atrioventricular septal defect with a common atrioventricular junction in which the right-sided component of the common atrioventricular valve was imperforate, producing tricuspid atresia with a severely hypoplastic right ventricle and an ostium primum defect. We discuss the implications of the anatomic findings with regard to concepts of cardiac development, drawing a comparison with similar cases previously reported.

A review of the embryological development and associated developmental abnormalities of the sternum in the light of a rare palaeopathological case of sternal clefting.

A sternal cleft or bifid sternum is a rare anterior chest wall abnormality. Although several cases have been reported in clinical literature … abnormalities are common in these two syndromes. This article demonstrates that the integration of embryology, modern clinical literature and palaeopathological principles is vital in the interpretation of developmental anomalies from an archaeological context.

Gallbladder agenesis with choledochal cyst--a rare association: a case report and review of possible genetic or embryological links.

Gallbladder agenesis is a rare congenital anomaly. Choledochal cysts are uncommon. The combination of both these entities in a 56-year-old woman is reported. A previously fit and well woman, presented to the emergency department with a 3-day history of abdominal pain. Preoperative imaging and intraoperative findings confirmed gallbladder agenesis and a type I choledochal cyst. There were no other anomalies. She underwent a resection of the choledochal cyst and reconstruction by hepaticojejunostomy.

Embryological basis and clinical correlation of the rare congenital anomaly of the human gall bladder: - "the diverticulum" - a morphological study.

BACKGROUND: Diverticulum of the human gall bladder is an important but distinct anatomical entity with significant clinical implications. It is one of the rarest congenital anomalies of the gall bladder being rarely discussed in literature. This article details the morphology of the diverticula found, along with the embryological basis and clinical significance of this important anatomical and clinical entity. AIM: To study the diverticula found, with respect to their morphology, and ascertain whether they were of congenital or acquired variety. Setting and Designs: The present study is a ret

Bilateral origin of superior cerebellar arteries from the posterior cerebral arteries, and clues to its embryologic basis.

The superior cerebellar artery is the most consistent branch of the basilar artery and arises near the bifurcation of the basilar artery. A bilateral origin of the superior cerebellar arteries from the posterior cerebral arteries has been rarely reported in the literature. Reporting variations in brain vessels is important for neurosurgeons to safely and confidently treat pathologies in this region. We report on a specimen with a bilateral origin to the superior cerebellar artery from the posterior cerebral artery and discuss the embryogenesis of this rare variation.

Coexistence of three rare congenital heart defects in a single patient: a unique case with important embryologic implications.

The unique anatomy, physiology, and surgical repair of a patient with features of three rare congenital heart defects (total anomalous pulmonary venous return to the coronary sinus, cor triatriatum, and unroofed coronary sinus with persistent left superior vena cava to the left atrium) is described. Analysis of this case suggests that these three conditions are linked in that they all may result as a consequence of a defect in the same embryologic process (i.e., incorporation of the pulmonary venous confluence into the left atrium).

Myxopapillary ependymoma and fatty filum in an adult with tethered cord syndrome: a shared embryological lesion? Case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Myxopapillary ependymoma and fatty fila are traditionally thought to arise via completely different pathophysiologies. Recognition of these distinct pathologies in the same patient is important for appropriate treatment and prognosis. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old woman presented with low back pain, bilateral leg radiculopathies, and mild leg weakness suggestive of tethered cord syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed lesions in the area of the conus medullaris consistent with a myxopapillary ependymoma and fatty filum. INTERVENTION: Under the surveilla

Twin paradox: Monoamniotic twin pregnancy discordant for limb body wall complex: Presentation of a rare syndrome with a review of embryology.

INTRODUCTION: Limb body wall complex is a rare polymalformative syndrome which consists of an abdominal and/or thoracic wall defect with an extremely short umbilical cord associated with kyphoscoliosis, intestinal malrotation, and lower limb defects. CASE REPORT: A 31-year-old primigravida presented with monochorionic monoamniotic twin pregnancy with discordant anomaly. One fetus had exomphalos, acrania, bilateral talipes, a single umbilical artery, kyphoscoliosis and a short umbilical cord, findings suggestive of limb body wall complex. An ultrasound one week later revealed an unfortunate in

Analysis of the clinical outcomes of microbial contamination caused by environmental contamination of the embryology laboratory during IVF-ET treatment cycles.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial contamination may cause loss of or damage to cultured oocytes or embryos, resulting in the lack of transplantable embryos during IVF embryo culture. However, there are few reports about IVF embryo contamination caused by embryology laboratories. In this work, we evaluated clinical pregnancy outcomes and the risk of maternal and infant complications after embryo contamination caused by environmental pollution during IVF. METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed 2490 IVF-ET ovulation induction therapy cycles in the Reproductive Center of Yichang Central People's Hospi…
