Childhood maltreatment results in altered deactivation of reward processing circuits in depressed patients: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of a facial emotion recognition task.

IMPORTANCE AND OBJECTIVES: Childhood adversity is a strong risk factor for the development of various psychopathologies including major depressive disorder (MDD). However, not all depressed patients experience early life trauma. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies using facial emotion processing tasks have documented altered blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) responses in specific cortico-limbic networks both in MDD patients and in individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment (CM). Therefore, a history of maltreatment may represent a key modulating factor responsible

Effectiveness of Pleasure Perception Training Group Therapy on Adolescents With Depression and Analysis of Factors Associated With Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: This study is designed to explore the effectiveness of pleasure perception training group (PPTG) therapy on adolescents with depression and the factors that influence the presence of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI). METHODS: A hundred and twenty adolescent depression patients were randomly assigned to either a control group (n = 60, routine treatment) or an observation group (n = 60, PPTG plus routine treatment) for two months. Outcome included depression (CDI), emotional intelligence (EIS), and self-injury (OSI) scores. Patients were stratified into NSSI and Non-NSSI g…

Impact of spike frequency and location on cognitive and emotional development in children with genetic generalized and self-limited epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) and self-limited focal epilepsy (SeLFE) are associated with normal intelligence, but evidence shows patients may face increased cognitive and emotional difficulties compared with the general population. This study aimed to investigate the impact of inter-ictal discharges (IEDs) on cognitive and emotional functioning in children with epilepsy. METHODS: Participants included 113 children (57.5% female), aged 8 to 18, who completed the NIH Toolbox cognitive battery assessing executive function, attention, episodic memory, language, and processing spe

Reframing workplace safety, wellbeing, and performance among operating room nurses in contemporary healthcare systems.

Operating rooms are complex, high-risk, and technology-intensive environments in which nurses perform safety-critical roles. This review aimed to reframe workplace safety, wellbeing, and performance among operating room nurses as interconnected system-level determinants of perioperative care. Using a thematic narrative approach and conceptual scope, literature published mainly between 2020 and 2026 was reviewed, with selected foundational studies included where conceptually necessary. Evidence was synthesized across occupational hazards, psychosocial stress, emotional labor, burnout, compassio

THE ROLE OF PSYCHODYNAMIC AND PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT IN LONELINESS.

This review article explores the relationship between psychodynamic factors, personality organization, and loneliness. It focuses on extensive research into attachment styles, shame, pathological narcissism, and personality disorders. Insecure attachment styles, both anxious and avoidant, emerge as significant predictors of loneliness. Their effects are shown to be mediated by disconnection-rejection schemas and diminished emotional intelligence. The shame and pathological narcissism, especially narcissistic vulnerability, also correlate strongly with increased loneliness and decreased life sa…

[Psychological adaptation in children with autism spectrum disorder and its effect on family quality of life].

INTRODUCTION: In most children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), other difficulties that do not fall within the diagnostic criteria arose, and could have an impact on family quality of life. Previous research has shown several relationships among these variables and family quality of life, however results are contradictories. AIM: To examine the role of psychological adaptation (including emotional symptoms, behavioral problems, hyperactivity, problems with peers, and prosocial behavior) in children with ASD and typical development, and its impact on family quality of life. Conditional reasoning in Asperger's syndrome and depersonalization disorder.

Conditional reasoning premises can be systematically manipulated to elicit specific response patterns. This is useful for investigating the reasoning style of people who report clinical symptoms. We administered a standardized conditional reasoning task to 16 participants with a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome (AS), 16 participants with a diagnosis of depersonalization disorder (DPD), and 32 intelligence-quotient-matched controls. Premises were manipulated for a) context, with some being embedded within extra statements, and b) content, neutral or emotional. Both the AS and DPD participants w

Quality of life in children treated for brain tumors. Intellectual, emotional, and academic function.

Thirty children with primary brain tumors were evaluated for alterations in intellectual, emotional, and academic functions. Nine were studied following surgery (prior to irradiation) and 21 after postoperative irradiation. Twenty-four patients (80%) showed no serious disabilities on routine medical and neurological examinations. Nineteen patients (63%) had normal intelligence quotient (IQ) levels. Qualitative disabilities on routine examinations were observed in six children: two of nine tested postoperatively, one of six tested after posterior fossa irradiation, and three of 15 tested after

Maternal thyroid function in the first half of pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes in early adolescence in the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) cohort.

Maternal thyroid hormone levels in pregnancy have been implicated to play a role in brain development, but few observational studies have examined their relationship with neurodevelopmental outcomes beyond early childhood. We investigated associations between maternal thyroid function during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes in 1824 children aged 10-13 years from the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) cohort. Outcomes included neurocognition (non-verbal intelligence [Raven's Progressive Matrices], executive working memory [SOPT]), behavioural org

Predictors of Successful Testicular Sperm Extraction: A New Era for Men with Non-Obstructive Azoospermia.

Background/Objectives: Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is a severe form of male infertility characterized by the absence of sperm in the ejaculate due to impaired spermatogenesis. Testicular sperm extraction (TESE) combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection is the primary treatment, but success rates are unpredictable, causing significant emotional and financial burdens. Traditional clinical and hormonal predictors have shown inconsistent reliability. This review aims to evaluate current and emerging non-invasive preoperative predictors of successful sperm retrieval in men with NOA, high

Burns in a suicide attempt related to psychiatric side effects of interferon.

A 50-year-old woman was admitted to our critical care center after pouring lamp oil on herself and setting herself on fire. Diagnosed with chronic hepatitis, she had received interferon-alpha at another hospital. During interferon therapy she developed anxiety, irritability, sleeplessness, and depression. At our hospital she underwent fluid resuscitation according to the method of Baxter. After treatment with topical cream and ointment, she underwent skin grafting. Interferon was not given. After discharge, wound healing proved satisfactory. She was intelligent and insightful, and her mental c

Cognitive biases in processing infant emotion by women with depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder in pregnancy or after birth: A systematic review.

Perinatal psychological problems such as post-natal depression are associated with poor mother-baby interaction, but the reason for this is not clear. One explanation is that mothers with negative mood have biased processing of infant emotion. This review aimed to synthesise research on processing of infant emotion by pregnant or post-natal women with anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Systematic searches were carried out on 11 electronic databases using terms related to negative affect, childbirth and perception of emotion. Fourteen studies were identified which loo

Emotional functioning in eating disorders: attentional bias, emotion recognition and emotion regulation.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal processes, anxiety and emotion regulation difficulties form a key part of conceptual models of eating disorders (EDs), such as anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), but the experimental findings to support this are limited. METHOD: The Reading the Mind in the Eyes task, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and a computerized pictorial (angry and neutral faces) Stroop task were administered to 190 women [50 with AN, 50 with BN and 90 healthy controls (HCs)]. RESULTS: Those with an ED showed attentional biases to faces in general (medium effec

Tuning Immersion and Performance with Adaptive Generative Music in VR.

Music in virtual environments has long been treated as a temporal evolving element, enhancing atmosphere and game pace but rarely considered as a performance adaptive element. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and procedural audio make it possible to generate music that adapts in real time to player actions and system state. Yet, despite its potential, the behavioural impact of such adaptive generative soundtracks in head-mounted display-based virtual reality (VR) remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we introduce a VR archery system that integrates Google MusicFXDJ wi
