Emotion-focused vs. cognitive interventions of schema therapy for borderline personality disorder: effects on neural emotion regulation networks - study protocol.

BACKGROUND: While the effects of psychotherapy methods are being intensively researched, little is known about the clinical and neurobiological effects of specific psychotherapeutic interventions. This study examines the effects of experiential emotion-focused and cognitive interventions in schema therapy on emotion regulation in borderline personality disorder. METHODS: In a randomized, single-blinded, parallel group design, clinical effects and effects on resting-state functional connectivity in neural emotion regulation networks and neurotransmitter metabolism (Glx/GABA) in key regions of

Interpersonal emotion regulation in daily life: a comparison of individuals with and without depressive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation is strongly linked to depressive disorders, yet distinctions between interpersonal and intrapersonal forms remain underexplored in daily life. This study examines emotion dysregulation in depression during close interpersonal interactions, comparing individuals with depression and healthy controls (HC), and exploring associations with alexithymia and childhood maltreatment. METHODS: Participants (18 HC, 17 with depression) reported three emotion regulation (ER) strategies (cognitive reappraisal, social sharing, suppression) during interpersonal interactions o

The influence of college students' "Wan Geng" motivation on emotion regulation self-efficacy.

"Wan Geng" () refers to the playful creation, remixing, and sharing of internet memes. While a global online behavior, it carries distinctive linguistic features in the Chinese cultural context and has become an important way for young people to express emotions and shape identity. Drawing on Uses and Gratifications Theory, Emotion Regulation Theory, and Self-Efficacy Theory, this study examined how different "Wan Geng" motivations relate to emotion regulation strategies and emotion regulation self-efficacy among university students. Using convenience sampling, an online survey was conducted w

Personality, emotion regulation, and age-based discrimination: implications for wellbeing in older adulthood.

METHODS: We sought to examine whether the negative associations between the two facets of ageism (internalized ageism and ageist discrimination) and psychological wellbeing are moderated by individual differences in personality, emotion regulation strategy use, and difficulties with strategy use in two cross-sectional studies. RESULTS: Findings suggested that age-based discrimination and internalized ageism are associated with lower wellbeing. Extraversion, neuroticism, response modulation strategies, and difficulties with emotion regulation did not moderate ageism-wellbeing associations. How

A Phase-Oriented Framework for Emotion Regulation in Traumatized Individuals With Dissociation: A Narrative Review.

Symptoms of emotion dysregulation and dissociation are common among people with a history of psychological trauma, and can complicate treatment effectiveness. Phase-based approaches to treatments, which begin with a stabilization and skills phase before moving to trauma-oriented interventions allow for flexible, integrable, and effective approaches that can be applied across various therapeutic modalities and delivery contexts. This narrative review describes empirically supported methods (e.g., Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) for targeting emotion dysregulation within phase-based treatments f

Developmental stability and change in emotion regulation strategies and strategy repertoires across adolescence.

The ability to manage emotions using emotion regulation (ER) strategies is a core competency developed across childhood and into adolescence. Youth are expected to develop more diverse ER repertoires-the range of strategies that adolescents use-as they approach adulthood. However, to date, an examination of longitudinal change and stability in normative ER strategy use or repertoires across early to late adolescence has yet to be conducted. The present study reports on two longitudinal samples with measures of six ER strategies. Reports in the Younger Sample (N = 201, aged 11-12 at Wave 1) wer

Visually grounded emotion regulation via diffusion models and user-driven reappraisal.

Cognitive reappraisal is a key strategy in emotion regulation, involving reinterpretation of emotionally charged stimuli to alter affective … ntation of cognitive reappraisal by integrating large-scale text-to-image diffusion models into the emotional regulation process. Specifically, we introduce a system wherein users reinterpret emotionally negative images via spoken reappraisals, which are then transformed into supportive, emotionally congruent visualizations using stable diffusion models with a fine-tu …

Task-based interpretation flexibility predicts real-world emotion regulation variability.

Adapting to daily emotional challenges requires flexibility including flexible interpretations of ambiguous situations and dynamic use of emotion regulation (ER) strategies. Understanding whether flexibility is a domain-general capacity that spans both cognition and emotion regulation has important implications. This study investigated whether baseline interpretation flexibility predicts day-to-day ER variability and affective outcomes using a multimethod design. Participants completed a lab-based Interpretation Inflexibility Task (IIT) to assess flexibility in revising interpretations of ambi

Distinct intrinsic neural connectivity of an emotion regulation network across the menopausal transition.

Menopause is a major psychoneuroendocrine transition which can impact emotional functioning and mental health. Although emotion regulation (ER) is fundamental for mental health, intrinsic neural connectivity supporting ER across the menopausal transition remains unexplored. Addressing this gap, this study provides the first examination of intrinsic effective connectivity within an ER-related network across menopausal stages. Resting-state fMRI data were acquired from 76 healthy premenopausal (n = 32), perimenopausal (n = 19), and postmenopausal (n = 25) women. Effective connectivity within a p

Self-referential processing and emotion regulation in epilepsy: Associations with affective symptom burden.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation and self-referential processing are core constructs in mental health, yet their interaction remains unexplored in epilepsy. Given the high prevalence of anxiety and depression in this population, this study investigates their interplay in people with epilepsy (PWE) and its association with affective symptomatology. METHODS: 23 PWE and 34 healthy controls (HC) completed the Self-Referential Encoding Task (SRET), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), Affective Style Questionnaire (ASQ), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-

Acute exercise improves emotion regulation in college students following social stress.

OBJECTIVE: Despite findings that acute exercises can regulate emotions, more specific research is needed to distinguish more efficient exercise types. This paper examines the effects and differences of three acute moderate exercise types on emotion regulation after a social stress event. METHODS: A total of 72 college students were randomly assigned into 4 groups: single aerobic group (Gsa), paired aerobic group (Gpa), dynamic stretching group (Gds), and sitting group (Gs) as a control group. Each participant in groups experienced a Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) for social stress induction

A Standardized Questionnaire Protocol for Internet Addiction and Emotion-Regulation Assessment in University Students.

Internet use is deeply embedded in university life, but problematic internet use cannot be evaluated adequately by exposure time alone. Evidence suggests that maladaptive or compulsive patterns of internet use are associated with difficulty in emotion regulation, yet inconsistencies in questionnaire order, eligibility criteria, screening thresholds, scoring procedures, and analytic reporting continue to limit comparability across studies. This method's article presents a standardized questionnaire protocol for behavioral-science and psychological-assessment studies examining internet addiction

Emotion-specific regulation components differentially predict profiles of adolescent psychosocial dysfunction.

Emotion regulation (ER) difficulties are a transdiagnostic risk factor for adolescent psychopathology, yet research is hampered by high intercorrelations among ER components. This study employed a data-driven approach to identify distinct profiles of adolescent dysfunction and select a parsimonious set of stable emotion-specific regulatory predictors. A sample of 795 Iranian adolescents (68.6% female; Mage = 16.06) completed measures of emotion-specific ER across sadness, fear, and anger (CERSA), psychosocial adjustment (SDQ), pathological traits (PID-5-BF), and disability (WHODAS-12). Person-

Insomnia beyond emotion regulation in adolescent anxiety and depression: A severity-based analysis.

Emotion regulation (ER) is a core transdiagnostic mechanism implicated in the development and maintenance of anxiety and depression. Although insomnia also plays a key role in these internalizing conditions, it has received comparatively less empirical attention. Moreover, the extent to which insomnia, above and beyond ER, contributes to anxiety and depressive symptoms at different severity levels remains poorly understood. A cross-sectional sample of 2352 adolescents (11-18 years old) completed validated measures assessing ER, insomnia, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Based on their s

Fronto-parietal oscillatory dynamics of emotion regulation as a function of adult attachment orientations.

INTRODUCTION: Emotion regulation enables individuals to modulate emotional experiences and behaviors according to situational demands. Within attachment theory, individual differences in attachment anxiety and avoidance are conceived as interpersonal dispositions that influence the quality and efficiency of emotion regulation strategies, potentially shaping the underlying neural dynamics. This study examined cortical oscillatory activity during two regulation strategies-cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression-focusing on theta (4-8 Hz) and beta (15-30 Hz) bands at the source level. Emotion Regulation in Functional Neurological Disorder: A Multimethod Comparison of Intra- and Interpersonal Strategies.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation (ER) difficulties are frequently reported in individuals with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), yet most evidence derives from self-report data, and little is known about intra- and interpersonal ER preference and success under controlled conditions. METHODS: In a preregistered multimethod investigation, a web-based questionnaire assessed habitual ER difficulties and interpersonal ER in 109 individuals with FND and 88 healthy controls (HC). A laboratory component, conducted in a subsample of the questionnaire participants (33 individuals with FND and 33 HC)

Interpersonal emotion regulation in dementia: Diagnostic differences and associations with caregiver mental health.

Close relational partners play a critical role in shaping each other's emotions during social interactions, a process known as interpersonal emotion regulation. We examined how different forms of dementia (i.e., Alzheimer's disease, behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia) affect interpersonal emotion regulation. We assessed how caregivers perceived their partners' prosocial regulatory efforts and tracked real-time changes in caregivers' affect during a dyadic interaction. We also investigated how these processes relate to caregivers' mental health. Informal car

Emotion regulation across disease stages in Huntington's disease gene expansion carriers.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation difficulties are increasingly recognized in Huntington's disease (HD) yet remain understudied with inconsistent findings. While motor symptoms are prominent, patients and caregivers often describe emotional and behavioral changes as distressing. This study assessed perceived emotion regulation abilities and strategies across disease stages, with a focus on anger and irritability. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study including individuals with premanifest HD (n = 49), manifest HD (n = 41), and gene-negative family members previously at risk (n = 34). Part

The neural mechanisms subserving the adaptiveness of emotion regulation flexibility and its link to depression.

Emotion Regulation Flexibility (ERF) is defined as an individual's ability to adaptively respond to changing situations and goals. Deficits in the adaptiveness of ERF have been linked to depression, suggesting a critical relationship between emotional processing and mental health. The objective of the present study was to investigate how variations in situational and goal-related contexts influence the association between ERF adaptiveness and depression. We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and behavioral tasks to explore this relationship. Participants completed tasks desi

Emotion Regulation in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Interventions: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) and emotion dysregulation (ED) have long been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as etiological and maintaining factors. Despite building interest in the field along with ancillary research into "rage OCD" (likely an example of ED), targeting the relationship between OCD and ER/ED has been understudied in pediatric OCD populations. The aim of this review was to elucidate the current state of the literature regarding ER/ED, its relationship to pediatric OCD, and related interventions. METHODS: A scoping review examined
