AIMS: Opioids have been implicated in emotion regulation. Opioid users report decreased negative emotional response, but there has been no formal study on the effect of opioid administration on emotional reactivity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of methadone on emotional reactivity in methadone-maintained patients.
DESIGN: Velten's mood induction procedures were used to induce elative and depressive emotional reactions in the subjects. Each group was administered both induction procedures at 0 hour and 3 hours (corresponding with trough and peak plasma methadone concentr

Much is known on how facial expressions of emotion are produced, including which individual muscles are most active in each expression. Yet, little is known on how this information is interpreted by the human visual system. This paper presents a systematic study of the image dimensionality of facial expressions of emotion. In particular, we investigate how recognition degrades when the resolution of the image (i.e., number of pixels when seen as a 5.3 by 8 degree stimulus) is reduced. We show that recognition is only impaired in practice when the image resolution goes below 20 × 30 pixels. A s

There has been a long controversy concerning whether the amygdala's response to emotional stimuli is automatic or dependent on attentional load. Using magnoencephalography and an advanced beamformer source localization technique, we found that amygdala automaticity was a function of time: while early amygdala responding to emotional stimuli (40-140 ms) was unaffected by attentional load, later amygdala response (280-410 ms), subsequent to frontoparietal cortex activity, was modulated by attentional load.

To study the prevalence, structure and risk factors of emotional burn-out in narcologists, 90 practitioners in the field of narcology were studied. Emotional burn-out syndrome was found in 37.7% of narcologists. The stage of "resistance" characterized by the lowered interest in professional duties, sparing of emotions and feeling of being tired from interpersonal contacts was observed most frequently. Emotions were totally removed from the professional activity at the stage of "exhaustion". The emotional burn-out syndrome was most prevalent within the first 10 years of professional activity. T…

The construct of emotion dysregulation increasingly has been used to explain diverse psychopathologies across the lifespan. The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS; K. L. Gratz & L. Roemer, 2004) represents the most comprehensive measure of the construct to date and exhibits good reliability and validity in adults; however, the measure has yet to be tested in adolescents. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the DERS in a community sample of 428 adolescents (ages 13-17 years). Exploratory factor analysis supported a 6-factor structure consistent with the 6 DERS

OBJECTIVE: It remains an open question whether there are basic emotional perception and emotional processing deficits in eating disorders (ED). The aim of this study was to explore deficits in emotional perception in restrictive anorexia nervosa (AN-R) and bulimia nervosa (BN), using visual emotional stimuli.
METHOD: Thirty-four patients with ED (19 with BN and 15 with AN-R) were compared with 25 controls. Visual stimuli from the international affective picture system were used.
RESULTS: Patients with AN-R showed increased fear when confronted with stimuli containing anger, whereas patients

UNLABELLED: The emotional experience of individuals who experience psychosis has historically been neglected, possibly due to the divide between the psychoses and neuroses. This study examined emotional experience and regulation in individuals who had experienced psychosis, individuals experiencing anxiety or mood disorders, and non-patient controls. Participants completed validated measures of emotional experience and emotion regulation. Both clinical groups were found to experience similar levels of emotions, and in comparison to the non-patient controls, they experienced greater levels of n…

BACKGROUND: Childhood overweight and obesity has become a global epidemic affecting children of all ages and ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. While the physical and financial consequences are well documented, little research is available on the emotional effect of overweight and obesity on children and adolescents.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the emotional effect of overweight and obesity on a child's self-esteem and self-concept.
SEARCH STRATEGY: The following databases were searched: CINAHL, Clinical Pharmacology, Health Source-Nursing and Academic Edition, MEDLINE, Pre-CINAHL, Psychologica

This event-related fMRI study examined the impact of processing load on the BOLD response to emotional expressions. Participants were presented with composite stimuli consisting of neutral and fearful faces upon which semi-transparent words were superimposed. This manipulation held stimulus-driven features constant across multiple levels of processing load. Participants made either (1) gender discriminations based on the face; (2) case judgments based on the words; or (3) syllable number judgments based on the words. A significant main effect for processing load was revealed in prefrontal cort

Until recently, scant attention has been paid to the effect of antidepressant drugs on emotion, and we have little knowledge about the way antidepressant drugs modulate neural processing of emotional and affective information, or their relationship to mood changes. Numerous behavioral studies have examined the impact of depression on the recognition of facial expressions. Although conflicting results have been obtained, depressive patients seem to attribute a different emotional valence to these stimuli than do control subjects. Recent studies have shown that a single dose of an antidepressant

OBJECTIVE: To determine cognitive and emotional changes among neurobrucellosis patients.
METHODS: The patients with neurobrucellosis and controls with brucellosis without neurologic involvement were included in the study. Neurobrucellosis was diagnosed by the following criteria: (i) symptoms or clinical findings compatible with neurobrucellosis, including headache, confusion, mental and emotional changes; (ii) isolation of Brucella spp. from CSF and/or demonstration of antibodies to Brucella > or = 1/4 in the CSF; (iii) the presence of lymphocytosis, increased protein and decreased glucose le

The human startle response is modulated by affective states. The startle response is facilitated in unpleasant, aversive context, such as fear, and reduced during pleasure. This association can be explored by simple technical methods. The modulation of startle is found also in animal. It offers the opportunity to investigate human emotional processes by a biologically based, language free paradigm.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is the pathological replay of emotional memory formed in response to painful, life-threatening, or horrifying events. In contrast, depression is often precipitated by more social context-related stressors. New data suggest that different types of life experiences can differentially impact biochemistry, physiology, anatomy, and behavior at the level of changes in gene expression. Repeated separation of neonatal rat pups from their mother results in many long-lasting alterations in biology and behavior paralleling that in depression, including hypercortisolism. The

Bentall & Thompson (1990) selected participants on the basis of high, medium and low scores on the Hypomanic Personality Scale. In an emotional Stroop test, the high hypomanic participants showed interference of colour naming for depression-related but not euphoria-related words. The current study tests the hypothesis that the effects found were mediated by anxiety, and not hypomania as claimed. Bentall & Thompson's study was repeated but measures of state of trait anxiety were also taken. When analysis was restricted to three subgroups selected in the same manner as in Bentall & Thompson's (1

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which psychiatrists are familiar with the concept of expressed emotion and to determine the extent of its use in their day-to-day practices. We also wished to test the ability of psychiatrists to estimate the expressed emotion status of the relatives of their patients. Following the assessment of expressed emotion in 96 relatives using the Camberwell Family Interview, the psychiatrists treating the schizophrenic patients were surveyed about their knowledge of expressed emotion and were asked to estimate the expressed emotion of their rel

The aims of this study were (i) to determine the frequency of emotional lability following first ever stroke, and (ii) to identify factors associated with this condition. Sixty-six consecutive inpatients with first ever stroke were surveyed two months post stroke for the presence of emotional lability. Demographic, clinical, psychiatric and stroke lesion characteristics were also assessed. Emotional lability was present in 12 of the 66 patients (prevalence: 18%). Emotional lability occurred independently of post stroke depression. Single lesions located in anterior regions of the cerebral hemi

Emotional factors can alter the likelihood of seizure occurrence, and they usually increase the frequency of attacks. Our case studies showed that such activation is brought about through missed medication, sleep deprivation, and hyperventilation. Less well documented is the possibility that increased excitability and seizures may be due to direct neuronal activation of limbic circuits, although such a mechanism would be quite plausible.

Two hundred and fifty couples in the general population completed self-report questionnaires which measured life events, personality, marital intimacy, and symptoms of nonpsychotic emotional illness. Path analysis was utilized to explain the development of symptoms of nonpsychotic emotional illness. Personality traits of neuroticism and extroversion explained most of the variance of symptoms of nonpsychotic emotional illness. Life events played a much smaller but significant role and marital intimacy was a nonsignificant factor. The data support a proneness model for the etiology of nonpsychot
