Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an acute neonatal inflammatory disease that affects the intestine and may result in necrosis, systemic sepsis and multisystem organ failure. NEC affects 5-10% of all infants with birth weight ≤ 1500 g or gestational age less than 30 weeks. Chorioamnionitis (CA) is the main manifestation of pathological inflammation in the fetus and is strong associated with NEC. CA affects 20% of full-term pregnancies and upto 60% of preterm pregnancies and, notably, is often an occult finding. Intrauterine exposure to inflammatory stimuli may switch innate immunity cells suc

The frequency of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in the extremely premature infant (less than 1,000 g) is still high and it is very difficult for infants weighing less than 1,000 g with NEC perforation to survive. In our institutes, the management protocol for NEC perforation in infants weighing less than 1,000 g includes peritoneal drainage under local anesthesia, administration of coagulating factor XIII, and the usual treatment for septic shock. During the past 3 years, four infants weighing less than 1,000 g with NEC perforation have survived using this protocol without laparotomy. This ma

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a commonly encountered disease of the gastrointestinal tract in premature infants. The aim of the study was to evaluate the therapeutic role of probiotics on NEC in a preterm rat model. NEC model was induced in preterm formula-fed rats, exposed daily to hypoxia, hypothermia, and administered pathogenic bacteria. Then rats were randomly divided into four different groups: control group, NEC group, NEC-antibiotic group, and NEC-probiotic group. All rats were sacrificed at the end of the experiment. BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a leading gastrointestinal condition in preterm infants, characterized by significant morbidity and mortality. Early recognition of risk factors is crucial for its prevention and prediction. This study focuses on identifying factors that contribute to the development of NEC in neonates.
METHODS: A case-control study that looked back at 144 newborns hospitalized to a Wuhan hospital between January 2010 and March 2023 for NEC was carried out. Over the same period, another 144 children without NEC were identified and selected as the non-NEC group fo

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains an incurable gut complication of prematurity with significant morbidity and mortality. Cell therapies, including mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), may be a promising treatment given their anti-inflammatory and regenerative potential. We assessed the effect of MSCs and other cell therapies (not classified as MSCs) on incidence, severity, and mortality in preclinical models of NEC. Bibliographic and gray literature searches yielded 17 371 records with 107 full-text articles assessed and ultimately 16 studies were included. These studies featured only roden

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a known cause of morbidity and mortality in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD), but reports about the burden of cardiogenic NEC frequently conflict. To synthesize the extant literature on the incidence, risk factors, and prognosis of NEC in patients with CHD. Medline, Cochrane, and EMBASE were searched from 1946 through 2023 for studies of NEC in infants 0-12 months of age with CHD. Risk of bias was assessed with validated tools for incidence and risk factors. Pooled estimates were meta-analyzed by risk of bias or synthesized without meta-analysis. E

Internal hernias in preterm neonates, although rare, can arise due to various anatomical and physiological factors associated with prematurity. We report a case of a preterm infant with symptoms of suspected necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) that turned out to be an internal hernia during surgical exploration. Given the overlapping symptoms, it is crucial to maintain a high index of suspicion and utilize the appropriate imaging techniques, such as ultrasound or radiographic studies, to aid in the differentiation between NEC and internal hernia, especially when responding to cases that do not imp

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a clonal plasma cell proliferative disorder characterized by the abnormal increase of monoclonal paraprotein and can lead to specific end-organ damage. Necrotizing enterocolitis or bowel necrosis is a surgical emergency defined by cellular death because of reduced blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract. We report a case of a 75-year-old female who was diagnosed with hyperviscosity syndrome (HVS) and was sent to ED. Further workup showed that she had a new diagnosis of IgG kappa MM for which she was started on chemotherapy. Later, she developed respiratory distress an

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) has a 45% mortality in neonatal intensive care units. This paper aimed to evaluate the isolated and combined effects of sildenafil and L-arginine in the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis. Neonatal rats were fed formula milk and submitted to hypoxia under a 100% N2 atmosphere for 70 s. Then, animals were subjected to hypothermia (4 °C for 10 min), twice a day for 3 days. Forty neonatal rats were divided into five groups: negative control-not submitted to the protocol (n = 5), sildenafil group-NEC protocol (n = 9), L-arginine group-NEC protocol (n = 9), L-ar

Background: The etiology of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is controversially discussed. One of the most recently proposed causes of NEC is an allergy to cow's milk protein. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of a maternal diet without bovine protein on the incidence of any NEC in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Materials and Methods: A pilot randomized controlled clinical trial was performed at Akbarabadi Hospital, Tehran, Iran, from December 2019 to July 2020, in women with VLBW infants. One hundred twenty mothers with VLBW neonates were randomly assigned to the interventi

BACKGROUND: There have been few studies on the relationship between the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). We conducted a retrospective case-control study to investigate this relationship in preterm neonates.
METHODS: A total of 199 preterm neonates diagnosed with NEC between January 2018 and January 2020 were included in this study. For each preterm infant with NEC that was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), controls were preterm neonates (matched for gestation and year of birth) who were not diagnosed with NEC. Exclusion criteria were

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) continues to cause high morbidity and mortality. Identifying early predictors for severe NEC is essential to improve therapy and optimize timing for surgical intervention. We present a retrospective study of patients with NEC, treated between 2010 and 2020, trying to identify factors influencing the severity of NEC. Within the study period, 88 affected infants with NEC or NEC-like symptoms are analyzed. A multiple logistic regression analysis reveals the following three independent predictors for NEC in Bell stage III: red blood cell transfusion (p = 0.027 with
