Long-Term Follow-up of Over 600 Living Related Kidney Donors: Single-Center Experience.

OBJECTIVES: Kidney transplant is the treatment of choice in patients with end-stage renal disease because it offers improved survival and better quality of life. Although most epidemiologic studies have suggested that living kidney donors have a minimal lifetime risk of developing end-stage renal disease, long-term complications and physiologic and psychologic sequelae resulting from donation remain unclear. Here, we examined the long-term results of living-related kidney donors who donated kidneys at the Başkent University Ankara Hospital over the past 25 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We wer

Joint Effect of Alcohol Drinking and Environmental Cadmium Exposure on Hypertension in Korean Adults: Analysis of Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2008 to 2013.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a common disease found in 1.13 billion adults worldwide. Several animal studies have provided evidence of the joint effect of alcohol drinking and cadmium exposure on hypertension. However, no epidemiologic study has examined the association between these 2 risk factors and hypertension. Therefore, we examined the individual effects of alcohol drinking and cadmium and the joint effect of their coexposure on hypertension in the general population. METHODS: We analyzed data from 8,403 South Korean adults who had been randomly assigned to the Korea National Health and

Patients with Protein-Truncating PKD1 Mutations and Mild ADPKD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Progression of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is highly variable. On average, protein-truncating PKD1 mutations are associated with the most severe kidney disease among all mutation classes. Here, we report that patients with protein-truncating PKD1 mutations may also have mild kidney disease, a finding not previously well recognized. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: From the extended Toronto Genetic Epidemiologic Study of Polycystic Kidney Disease, 487 patients had PKD1 and PKD2 sequencing and typical ADPKD imaging patterns by ma

Towards a comprehensive developmental model of pathological gambling.

AIMS: To develop a comprehensive etiological model of pathological gambling (PG) for men and women based on Kendler's development model for major depression, which groups 22 risk factors into five developmental tiers (childhood, early adolescence, late adolescence, adulthood, last year). We hypothesized that: (1) all risk factors would be associated significantly with PG; (2) the effect of risk factors in earlier developmental tiers would be accounted for by later tiers; and (3) there would be few gender differences. DESIGN: Separate models were built for life-time gambling and for 12-month P

Traditional coronary risk factors in healthy Turkish military personnel between 20 and 50 years old: focus on high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies presented the Turkish population as a typical example of nations with low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). Nevertheless, some recent studies opposed this suggestion. We aimed to examine the traditional cardiovascular risk factors in young-middle age male military professionals, focusing especially on HDL-c. METHODS: In this observational and cross-sectional study, the data of 820 male military personnel between 20-50 years old (mean age: 35.3±6.9) who applied to the hospital for routine health examination were included. Oscillometric measure of blood pressure detects association between orthostatic hypotension and depression in population based study of older adults.

BACKGROUND: White matter hyperintensities may contribute to depression by disrupting neural connections among brain regions that regulate mood. Orthostatic hypotension (OH) may be a risk factor for white matter hyperintensities and accumulating evidence, although limited suggests it may play a role in the development of late-life depression. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between an oscillometric measure of orthostatic hypotension and depression in population based sample of older adults. METHODS: We analysed data on adults aged 60 and over from the first wave of The Ir
