Creating an African HIV clinical research and prevention trials network: HIV prevalence, incidence and transmission.

HIV epidemiology informs prevention trial design and program planning. Nine clinical research centers (CRC) in sub-Saharan Africa conducted HIV observational epidemiology studies in populations at risk for HIV infection as part of an HIV prevention and vaccine trial network. Annual HIV incidence ranged from below 2% to above 10% and varied by CRC and risk group, with rates above 5% observed in Zambian men in an HIV-discordant relationship, Ugandan men from Lake Victoria fishing communities, men who have sex with men, and several cohorts of women. HIV incidence tended to fall after the first th

[The effectiveness of the Program of Communication and Education in Health on the control of S. mansoni infection in some areas of the state of Bahia].

The Program for S. mansoni Control (PCE) has been developed in some areas of the State of Bahia by the Fundação Nacional de Saúde (FNS). In 1989, activities on Information, Education, Communication and Community Mobilization (IEC/MC) were initiated. This study evaluates the epidemiological impact of the IEC/MC, using a quasi-experimental study design strategy, comparing the prevalences of infection for S. mansoni in areas of IEC/MC and estimates of other areas. The data used were routinely collected by the local staff of the FNS. A decrease on the prevalence of S. mansoni infection was found i

Folate and cancer: a review of the literature.

Folate, a water-soluble vitamin, part of the vitamin B complex, plays an important role in methylation reactions and DNA/RNA synthesis. This review examines the experimental and epidemiological evidence for the association between folate status and risk of cancer. Data have accumulated indicating that low folate status may promote carcinogenesis. Low folate levels are associated with cytogenetic abnormalities in vivo and in vitro. Findings from animal studies are conflicting and suggest that the effect of folate on neoplasia depends on factors such as the animal and tumor model, the type, timi

Identification of training needs in schistosomiasis research to build capacity for schistosomiasis control in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is the leading cause of fatal upper gastrointestinal bleeding among adults in East Africa. The prevalence among school-aged children in villages along the Albert-Nile shoreline in North-Western Uganda is estimated at 85%. Efforts to control schistosomiasis in low- and-middle-income countries remain limited due to an incomplete understanding of the pathogenesis, disease manifestations, transmission mechanisms, preventive measures and interventions. In addition, there is insufficient capacity to analyse, model and predict relevant clinical case management systems, bio

EMF and health.

Electric and magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the modern society, and concerns have been expressed regarding possible adverse effects of these exposures. This review covers epidemiologic research on health effects of exposures to static, extremely low-frequency (ELF), and radio frequency (RF) fields. Research on ELF fields has been performed for more than two decades, and the methodology and quality of studies have improved over time. Studies have consistently shown increased risk for childhood leukemia associated with ELF magnetic fields, whereas ELF fields most likely are not a risk factor

Current risks of byssinosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in textile workers.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The textile manufacturing sector is a major contributor to the economies of several emergent economies in the global South. Respiratory disease, including byssinosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), among textile workers appears to be common in this setting. RECENT FINDINGS: Notably, little or no contemporary research has been published from countries, which are major global producers of textiles. Most recent epidemiological studies are of a cross-sectional design, with deficiencies that repeat those of research in this area over the past 20 years and do li

RIFD - A brief clinical research interview for functional somatic disorders and health anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological research in functional somatic disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and bodily distress syndrome and related conditions such as health (illness) anxiety is often based on self-reported questionnaires or layman interviews. This study presents and describes the Research Interview for Functional somatic Disorders (RIFD) and provides first data regarding RIFD's ability to identify cases with functional somatic disorders and health anxiety in a two-phase design following self-reported symptom questionnaires. METHODS: RIFD wa

Reliability of adult retrospective recall of lifetime tobacco use.

Retrospective assessment of tobacco use underlies much of the data collected in epidemiological and genetic epidemiological research. Although individuals are asked to report lifetime tobacco use for periods spanning months to decades, the test-retest reliability intervals of the instruments often span only a few weeks to several months. The present analyses examined the test-retest reliability of retrospective tobacco use measures, including details of first use, circumstances of first use, and initial subjective reactions. The questions were part of the Lifetime Tobacco Use Questionnaire (LT

Stability of questionnaire items measuring behaviours, attitudes and stages of change related to sun exposure.

The use of questionnaires in epidemiological studies needs more methodological research. The time and effort spent on questionnaire design is often limited. Studies on the construction of questionnaires could lead to a higher quality of data, enhanced comparability and improved credibility of epidemiological findings. The aim of the present study was to examine the test-retest reliability of some common items measuring sun-related variables. A sample of 52 female Swedish nurses attending a postgraduate course in research methodology was chosen. They completed a questionnaire on two occasions s

Characterization of the Metabochip in diverse populations from the International HapMap Project in the Epidemiologic Architecture for Genes Linked to Environment (EAGLE) project.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified hundreds of genomic regions associated with common human disease and quantitative traits. A major research avenue for mature genotype-phenotype associations is the identification of the true risk or functional variant for downstream molecular studies or personalized medicine applications. As part of the Population Architecture using Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) study, we as Epidemiologic Architecture for Genes Linked to Environment (EAGLE) are fine-mapping GWAS-identified genomic regions for common diseases and quantitative traits. Sex and Gender Differences in Lung Disease.

Sex differences in the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system have been widely reported. These intrinsic sex differences have also been shown to modulate the pathophysiology, incidence, morbidity, and mortality of several lung diseases across the life span. In this chapter, we describe the epidemiology of sex differences in respiratory diseases including neonatal lung disease (respiratory distress syndrome, bronchopulmonary dysplasia) and pediatric and adult disease (including asthma, cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer,

[IDDM-Sardinia Project: a study model on the etiopathogenesis of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and other autoimmune pathologies. Gruppi di studio IDDM-Sardegna].

The "IDDM-Sardinia project" started in the beginning '90s and this main objective was, and still is, to clarify the epidemiological aspects of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in Sardinia, an island with a high incidence of the disease. Initially, the project included three main aims: 1) to continue monitoring the incidence of the disease and to design maps of geographical distribution of it in the island; 2) to study the pre-diabetes period, by assaying islet-related autoantibodies (ICA, GADA and IA-2icA), and to design models of prediction in a general population from a large cohort of 10

Advances in the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of cryptosporidiosis.

Cryptosporidiosis, the disease caused by protozoa of the genus Cryptosporidium, represents a major public health problem in both developing and developed countries. The infection can be severe and life threatening among immunocompromised individuals, particularly in AIDS patients and in those with primary immunodeficiency diseases. This review examines the essential aspects of the epidemiology of the infection, highlighting the role of animals, water and food. A critical evaluation of the diagnostic tools used in clinical settings is also provided. Lastly, the review examines the chemotherapeu

Cyclospora cayetanensis infection: current insights into foodborne outbreaks, diagnostic challenges, molecular epidemiology, and future directions.

Cyclospora cayetanensis causes prolonged or relapsing watery diarrhea and is an important cause of foodborne outbreaks, most often associated with contaminated fresh produce. Recent multistate outbreaks in the United States have highlighted how short product shelf life, complex supply chains, incomplete ingredient-level exposure data, and limited availability of implicated foods hinder timely source attribution. This review examines foodborne outbreak epidemiology, clinical and diagnostic challenges, molecular epidemiology, treatment, and priorities for surveillance and research. PubMed/MEDLIN

Neisseria gonorrhoeae molecular typing for understanding sexual networks and antimicrobial resistance transmission: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) is a significant global public health concern due to rising diagnoses rates and antimicrobial resistance. Molecular combined with epidemiological data have been used to understand the distribution and spread of NG, as well as relationships between cases in sexual networks, but the public health value gained from these studies is unclear. We conducted a systematic review to examine how molecular epidemiological studies have informed understanding of sexual networks and NG transmission, and subsequent public health interventions. METHODS: Five research dat
