Indirect trauma to the growth plate: results of MR imaging after epiphyseal and metaphyseal injury in rabbits.

Abnormalities of the growth plate secondary to epiphyseal and metaphyseal injury were studied with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, radiography, and histologic examination in 20 rabbits. Epiphyseal injury resulted in either the formation of a bony bridge across the growth plate or focal curving of the growth plate caused by a decrease in longitudinal growth. Metaphyseal injury resulted in interference with endochondral ossification, thickening of the growth plate, and extension of cartilage into the metaphysis. Serial MR images obtained during the first 6 weeks after injury showed persistence

Fracture of the distal radial epiphysis. Characteristics and surgical treatment of premature, post-traumatic epiphyseal closure.

Wrist deformities developed in ten children secondary to injury of the growth plate and premature closure of the distal radial epiphysis. Premature closure of the growth plate followed epiphyseal compression injuries or repeated forceful attempts at reduction. These injuries should not require repeated reductions in children with epiphyseal remodeling potential of more than two years if the initial reduction achieves apposition of more than 50%. Gross deformity develops if the discrepancy between radial and ulnar lengths is more than 4 mm. Ulnar shortening and correction of the radiocarpal ang

Bilateral femoral head collapse in an adolescent with brachydactyly (multiple epiphyseal dysplasia tarda type 1c).

Children with femoral head radiographic changes suggestive of bilateral avascular necrosis require a careful differential diagnosis. Although the child may be found to have an epiphyseal dysplasia, the course may not be benign. At adolescence, in certain of the multiple epiphyseal dysplasia tarda forms, rapid destruction of the femoral head occurs with clinical and radiographic features indistinguishable from avascular necrosis. A possible interrelationship between epiphyseal dysplasia and avascular necrosis is considered.

[Study by gel electrophoresis, of alpha chains and of CNBr peptides of collagen from epiphyseal cartilage in chondrodysplasia].

The alpha chains and the major CNBr - derived peptides of collagen of growth cartilage were studied in the following syndromes: thanatophoric dwarfism, pseudothanatophoric dwarfism, achondroplasia, pseudoachondroplasia, diastrophic dwarfism, metatropic dwarfism, Kniest disease, parastremmatic dwarfism, multiple exostoses, Blount disease and pycnodysostosis. After extraction of proteoglycans the collagen was solubilized by limited pepsin digestion purified, and the alpha chains were analysed by electrophoresis. The major CNBr - derived peptides were obtained by cleaving directly the cartilage a

[Poly-epiphyseal dysplasia, probably autosomal recessive. Contribution of the ultrastructural study to the discovery of this autonomous form].

An ultrastructural study of growth cartilage permitted individualization of a particular form of polyepiphyseal dysplasia which differs clinically and radiologically only slightly from the dominant form. The main difference concerns the superior femoral epiphyses which are more flattened and spread out. Inclusions, probably of lysosomial origin and containing granulous or filamentous material, were observed. This aspect is different from that observed in the dominant form and consisting of swellings of the endoplasmic reticulum with a suggestion of a periodical structure. The mode of inheritan…

Phalangeal cone-shaped epiphyses of the hand: their natural history, diagnostic sensitivity, and specificity in cartilage hair hypoplasia and the trichorhinophalangeal syndromes I and II.

Phalangeal cone-shaped epiphyses are an ideal object for the radiologist to study with temporal reasoning, to examine their shape, diagnostic usefulness, natural history and effect on pathophysiology. Radiographs of the hands of 60 patients with cartilage hair hypoplasia (CHH), 69 with trichorhinophalangeal syndrome I (TRP I) and 11 with TRP II were examined, including 26 longitudinal observations. The early phases of cone development were recorded. In CHH a characteristic mesophalangeal type of cone in 42/47 patients of the "Age Suitable for Classification" (ASC) was detected. All 46 TRP I an…

Total knee replacement in a dog with an articular epiphyseal medial condylar fracture of the distal femur, a case report.

The objective of this study was to describe outcome in a dog with a failed atypical articular medial femoral condyle fracture salvaged with total knee replacement. We present a retrospective case study of a 2-year-old male neutered Whippet dog. An articular medial condylar fracture was repaired primarily with extraarticular positional cortical screws. Construct failure was diagnosed 16 days after surgery when the dog was represented with lameness and radiographs confirmed fragment displacement. Total knee replacement was used for surgical salvage. Long-term follow up with the owner and patient

Volume Measurements of the Knee Articular Cartilage and Epiphyseal Bone for Evaluating the Structural Characteristics of the Discoid Lateral Meniscus.

Introduction Previous studies have identified morphological features in the bone and cartilage of knees with discoid lateral meniscus (DLM), but these investigations often depended on simple geometric variables like angles and linear dimensions. Three-dimensional (3D) bone and articular cartilage models can be used to obtain the volumes of knee structures. This study aimed to evaluate the volume of articular cartilage and epiphyseal bone in non-pathological knees and those with DLM and to assess their structural differences. Materials and methods This study included 19 magnetic resonance imagi

Comparison Between Ultrasonography and Radiography in the Detection of Epiphyseal Ossification Centers of the Knee in Infants With Permanent Congenital Hypothyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the usefulness of ultrasonography in detecting knee ossification centers in infants with permanent congenital hypothyroidism (PCH). METHODS: From 2011 to 2021, all infants with PCH referred for thyroid ultrasound also underwent left knee ultrasound and radiography on the same day. Knee radiographs were compared with knee sonograms. Two pediatric radiologists reviewed the consensus knee radiographs and sonograms to identify femoral and tibial epiphyseal ossification centers (presence/absence). The concordance between ultrasonography and radiography was assessed. Anoth

Septic Arthritis Associated With Hip Joint Subluxation and Epiphyseal Plate Deformation as a Sequala of Sickle Cell Anemia.

This case report emphasizes the critical nature of septic arthritis in pediatric patients, particularly its predilection for large joints like the hip. It underscores the importance of rapid diagnosis and early intervention to preserve joint function. The case involves a six-year-old patient with sickle cell anemia who presented with persistent hip pain and hip subluxation and underwent hip joint arthrotomy. Clinical findings revealed limited mobility, weakness, and radiographic abnormalities. Comprehensive rehabilitation resulted in significant improvements in pain, mobility, and function. Th

Conservative treatment for stable osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow before epiphyseal closure: effectiveness of elbow immobilization for healing.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Stable lesions of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum have been treated with activity restriction (AR), and the complete healing requires 1 or 2 years. Little is known about the effectiveness of elbow immobilization. We hypothesized that elbow immobilization would have positive effects on healing of stable OCD. METHODS: The study subjects were 43 patients (mean age: 12.2 years) with 43 stable OCD lesions of the prematured elbow (mean skeletal age score: 17.1 points of 0-27 points system). The subjects were divided into 3 groups: group A, AR without elb
