Atlanto-axial approach for cervical myelography in a Thoroughbred horse with complete fusion of the atlanto-occipital bones.

A 2-year-old Thoroughbred gelding with clinical signs localized to the first 6 spinal cord segments (C1 to C6) had complete fusion of the atlanto-occipital bones which precluded performing a routine myelogram. An ultrasound-assisted myelogram at the intervertebral space between the atlas and axis was successfully done and identified a marked extradural compressive myelopathy at the level of the atlas and axis, and axis and third cervical vertebrae.

Myxedema coma leading to respiratory depression in a dog.

A 10-year-old, intact male, cocker spaniel was presented with hypothermia, without shivering, and progressive stupor leading to coma. Myxedema coma, potentially precipitated by diuretic therapy, was tentatively diagnosed and treatment initiated, but progressive respiratory depression led to the decision to euthanize. Postmortem findings supported the diagnosis of myxedema coma.

[The healing influenced by hypothyroidism and elderly. Study of intestinal anastomosis healing in rats].

PURPOSE: The aging of the population has led to an increased number of interventions in elderly patients, with hypothyroidism, even at the subclinical level, being a common situation among these patients. The objective of the present study was to determine the influence of hypothyroidism on the healing process of colon anastomoses in aged rats. METHODS: 96 male Wistar rats were used, 48 of them young and 48 old. Half the young animals and half the old ones were euthyroid and half were hypothyroid. Hypothyroidism was obtained by total thyroidectomy. Thirty days after surgery the animals were s

Canine meningioma: a case report of a rare subtype and novel atlanto basioccipital surgical approach.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel histological subtype of skull base and cranial cervical meningioma operated upon through an uncommon atlanto basioccipital approach. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case report. ANIMAL: A seven-year-old neutered female Boxer. METHODS: The dog was presented due to lethargic behavior, signs of head and neck pain, and ongoing tetraparesis. Neurological examination and magnetic resonance imaging led to diagnosis of a ventral spinal canal mass causing severe cord and brainstem compression and which required surgical management. RESULTS: The mass was approached through a ve

Presumed primary muscular lymphoma in a dog.

A case of presumed primary muscular lymphoma in an 8-year-old, intact, male Newfoundland dog is reported. The dog was presented for evaluation of an infiltrating ventral cervical mass, respiratory distress, and anorexia of 1-month duration. Fine-needle aspiration of the mass revealed anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Despite chemotherapy, health status declined and the animal was euthanized a few weeks later. At necropsy, the mass infiltrated the cervical muscles and extended ventrally to the left forelimb and cranially to the tongue and laryngeal musculature. Other muscles were infiltrated by t

Chronic Periodontal Infection and Not Iatrogenic Interference Is the Trigger of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: Insights from a Large Animal Study (PerioBRONJ Pig Model).

Background and Objectives: Antiresorptive drugs are widely used in osteology and oncology. An important adverse effect of these drugs is medication-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). There is scientific uncertainty about the underlying pathomechanism of MRONJ. A promising theory suspects infectious stimuli and local acidification with adverse effects on osteoclastic activity as crucial steps of MRONJ etiology. Clinical evidence showing a direct association between MRONJ and oral infections, such as periodontitis, without preceding surgical interventions is limited. Large animal models i

Historical Control Data of Spontaneous Pathological Findings in C57BL/6J Mice Used in 18-Month Dietary Carcinogenicity Assays.

A retrospective analysis in C57BL6/J mice used in dietary carcinogenicity studies was performed to determine the survival rate, causes of death and incidences of spontaneous non-tumoral and tumoral findings. Data were collected from 1600 mice from control dose groups of sixteen 18-month carcinogenicity assays performed between 2003 and 2021 at the same test facility with similar environmental conditions and experimental procedures. The survival rate was high in both sexes (81%-85%) and the causes of humane euthanasia or death were mainly non-tumoral (chronic ulcerative dermatitis, atrial throm

Induction of left ventricular hypoplasia by occluding the foramen ovale in the fetal lamb.

Disturbed fetal haemodynamics often affects cardiac development and leads to congenital cardiac defects. Reduced left ventricular (LV) preload in the fetus may result in hypoplastic LV, mitral and aortic valve, mimicking a moderate form of hypoplastic left heart complex. We aimed to induce LV hypoplasia by occluding the foramen ovale (FO) to reduce LV preload in the fetal sheep heart, using percutaneous trans-hepatic catheterisation. Under maternal anaesthesia and ultrasound guidance, hepatic venous puncture was performed in six fetal lambs (0.7-0.75 gestation). A coronary guidewire was advanc

Systemic delivery of recombinant brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Loss of huntingtin-mediated BDNF gene transcription has been shown to occur in HD and thus contribute to the degeneration of the striatum. Several studies have indicated that an increase in BDNF levels is associated with neuroprotection and amelioration of neurological signs in animal models of HD. In a recent study, an increase in BDNF mRNA and protein levels was recorded in mice administered recombinant BDNF peripherally. Chronic, indwelling osmotic mini-pumps containing either recombinant BDNF or saline were surgically placed in R6/2 or wild-type mice from 4 weeks of age until euthanasia. N

Characteristics of viruses derived from nude mice with persistent measles virus infection.

Measles virus (MV) isolates from patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) differ from wild-type MV virologically. However, few animal models have reported viruses with characteristics of the SSPE virus. The MV Edmonston strain was inoculated into the subarachnoid space of nude mice. All nude mice displayed weight loss and required euthanasia, with a mean survival duration of 73.2 days. The viral load in the brain was 4- to 400-fold higher than the inoculated load, and brain infection was confirmed by immunostaining. Gene sequencing of the viruses revealed that amino acid mutati

Equine neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is an inherited, neurodegenerative disorder with fatal outcome in humans. It has also been described in some animal species; this is the first report of NCL in equines. Three horses showed developmental retardation, slow movements and loss of appetite at the age of six months. Neurological symptoms, as well as visual failure in one case, were noticed at the age of 1 year. Due to slowly progressing deterioration, euthanasia was indicated 1.5 years after onset of conspicuous behavior. At necropsy, slight flattening of the gyri and discoloring of the brain was

Synergistic effects of biosynthesized gold nanoparticles with curcumin on motor, inflammatory, and oxidative parameters in a Parkinson's disease model.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disease, whose main characteristic is the death of dopaminergic neurons. The animal model of Parkinsonism with reserpine has been used to mimic the consequences of Parkinson's disease. The use of gold nanoparticles in the treatment of several diseases arises due to their evidence of promising antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, in turn, presents neuroprotective activity in neurodegenerative diseases by reducing both inflammatory activity and oxidative stress in models of Parkinson's disease. This articl
