Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) are widely used in the clinic as well as research to study the functional integrity of the different parts of sensory pathways. However, most general anesthetics, such as isoflurane, are known to suppress SEPs, which might affect the interpretation of the signals. In animal studies, the usage of anesthetics during SEP measurements is inevitable due to which detailed effect of these drugs on the recordings should be known. In this paper, the effect of isoflurane on SEPs was studied in a rat model. Both time and frequency properties of the cortical recordin…

OBJECTIVE: Drug misuse in pregnancy is associated with impaired infant visual development. Pilot data showed abnormal flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in neonates exposed to methadone in utero, but results were confounded by intrauterine growth restriction, gestation, and ongoing drug misuse. This large cohort study aimed to clarify the effects on neonatal flash VEPs of maternal drug misuse in pregnancy, including prescription of substitute methadone and subsequent development of neonatal abstinence syndrome.
METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study. Flash VEPs were recorded within 3…

BACKGROUND: Phosphene thresholds (PT) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as well as paired-pulse suppression (PPS) of visually evoked potentials (VEP) are used to characterize visual cortex excitability, however, their relation remains unknown.
METHODS: We measured PT after single TMS over the occipital lobe, and recorded VEPs after paired-pulse stimulation at short stimulus-onset-asynchronies in the same subject. PPS was expressed by the ratio second to first response.
RESULTS: We found a negative correlation between PT and PPS (r = -0.36, P = 0.039) indicating that higher P…

Migraine patients show interictally a strong intensity dependence of auditory evoked cortical potentials (IDAP) and a lack of habituation of evoked potentials. Photic drive on high-frequency flash stimulation is another well-known interictal feature in migraineurs, associated with alpha-rhythm hyper-synchronisation. We compared therefore the influence of light stimulation on IDAP in healthy volunteers (HV) and migraine patients. A continuous flash stimulation was delivered during the recording of auditory evoked potentials at suprathreshold increasing stimulation intensities. IDAP was measured…

Neonatal encephalopathy is a significant cause of infant mortality and morbidity with risk of neurological sequelae in the survivors of neonates admitted to Neonatal (N) Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The EEG and Evoked Potentials (EPs) are very informative in the ICU. In particular, it is known that the SomatoSensory (SS) EPs are the best single indicator of early prognosis in adults and children patients with traumatic and/or hypoxic-ischemic coma compared to the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and CTscan. Most paediatric studies excluded newborns in an attempt to eliminate the age effects, because of …

The interaction of brain hemodynamics and neuronal activity has been intensively studied in recent years to yield better understanding of brain function. We investigated the relationship between visual-evoked hemodynamic responses (HDRs), measured with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and neuronal activity in humans, approximated with the stimulus train duration or with visual-evoked potentials (VEPs). Concentration changes of oxyhemoglobin (HbO(2)) and deoxyhemoglobin (HbR) in tissue and VEPs were recorded simultaneously over the occipital lobe of ten healthy subjects to 3, 6, and 12 s patt…

We investigated a progression of brain atrophy and somatosensory system dysfunction in multiple system atrophy (MSA). Subjects were 21 MSA patients [12 MSA-C (cerebellar type) and 9 MSA-P (parkinsonism type)]. The relative volumes of cerebrum, brainstem and cerebellum to the intracranial volume were obtained from three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) of the brain. The median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded, and the latencies and amplitudes of N9, N11, P13/14, N20 and P25 components were measured. We studied correlations between brain volumes, SEP and clinical…

OBJECTIVE: Invasive stimulation of the motor cortex has been used for years to alleviate chronic intractable pain in humans. In our study, we have investigated the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a noninvasive stimulation method, for manipulating the excitability of cortical motor areas on laser evoked potentials (LEP) and acute pain perception. DESIGNS AND SETTINGS: The amplitude of the N1, N2, and P2 LEP components of 10 healthy volunteers were evaluated prior to and following anodal, cathodal, and sham stimulation of the primary motor cortex. In a separate experime…

OBJECT: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the topographical distribution of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) in the subthalamic area, including the zona incerta (ZI). Determination of this distribution may help in the correct placement of deep brain stimulation (DBS) leads.
METHODS: Intraoperative SSEPs were recorded from contacts of DBS electrodes at 221 sites in 41 patients: three patients with essential tremor and 38 with Parkinson disease who underwent implantation of DBS electrodes for the relief of severe tremor or parkinsonism.
RESULTS: Two distinct SSEPs were recorde…

PURPOSE: To describe a methodology for measuring abnormal timing of monocular multifocal visual evoked potentials (mfVEP).
METHODS: The mfVEPs from 100 individuals with normal visual fields and normal fundus exams were analyzed. The stimulus was a 60 sector, pattern-reversing dartboard display. For each of the 60 locations of the dartboard and each channel and each eye, a template was derived based upon the average of the responses from the 100 normal individuals. In deriving this template, care was taken to exclude those responses reversed in polarity as compared to the average response. The…

PURPOSE: To determine the significance of flash visual evoked potentials (FVEP) in the evaluation of patients with traumatic optic neuropathy (TON).
METHODS: Eleven head-injured patients admitted to our center were diagnosed with unilateral TON. For every patient, FVEPs were obtained in both the affected eye and the unaffected eye. The normal eye thus functioned as each subject's internal control. We determined the amplitudes of FVEP waveforms for each eye and calculated an amplitude ratio of the affected/normal side for all individuals. The best-corrected visual acuity was obtained for each …

Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) frequently report symptoms related to vestibular disorders in the course of their disease. At present, the fundamental tests assessing vestibulospinal involvement are posturography and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs). While posturography cannot be performed in every subject requiring minimal stance control, VEMPs do not require any specific skill on the part of the subjects and they may be investigated in all patients able to sit. VEMPs were recorded for 40 patients (17 men, 23 women; mean age 38 years, range 17-71 years) fulfilling diagnosti

An enlarged vestibular aqueduct (LVA) is a common congenital inner ear anomaly responsible for some unusual vestibular and audiological symptoms. Most of the cases show bilateral early onset and progressive hearing loss in children. The gross appearance on CT scan of the inner ear is generally normal. However, precise measurements of the inner ear components reveal abnormal dimensions, which may account for the accompanying auditory and vestibular dysfunction. Despite extensive studies on hearing and the vestibular apparatus, saccular function is not studied. To our knowledge this is the first

Respiratory muscles play an important role in the origin of respiratory sensations. Data dissecting the role of the diaphragm and other inspiratory muscles are scarce. This study aimed to determine the impact of diaphragm dysfunction following inspiratory resistive loading on respiratory-related evoked potentials considered as a neurophysiological substrate of certain types of respiratory sensations. Altogether, nine subjects aged 25-50 yrs (six females) participated in the study. Transdiaphragmatic pressure output of cervical magnetic stimulation (with subdivision in oesophageal and gastric c…

We report on the function of the inferior vestibular nerve, as monitored by the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP), in two patients suffering from Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Both the patients presented canal paresis (CP) and hearing loss, but in one patient normal VEMP was recorded while the other presented vagus nerve paralysis plus no VEMP response at the highest stimulus intensity used in our institute (i.e., 105 dB nHL).
