BACKGROUND: Exercise capacity in grown-ups with congenital heart disease (GUCH) is mostly reported by peak oxygen consumption (peak VO(2)). … (r=-0.421) correlated to a lesser degree (p<0.001).
CONCLUSION: The investigated GUCH show reduced exercise tolerance compared to controls, related to the underlying heart defect. Different expressions of exercise tolerance clearly reveal the same differences in exercise capacity across groups of GUCH.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a prevalent cardiovascular disorder with limited evidence-based therap … diomyocytes.
RESULTS: HIIT and MICT both improve hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance, reduced exercise tolerance, and cardiac diastolic dysfunction in mice with HFpEF. They also attenuate cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis. Notably, HIIT produces the most pronounced effects. Transcriptomic profiling revealed necroptosis to be the pivotal pathway media …

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung disease encompasses a diverse group of chronic lung conditions characterised by distressing dyspnoea, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance and poor health-related quality of life. Exercise training is one of the few treatments to induce positive changes in exercise tolerance and symptoms, however there is marked variability in response. The aetiology and severity of interstitial lung disease may influence the response to treatment. The aims of this project are to establish the impact of exercise training across the range of disease severity and to identify whether …

The frequency of high-altitude sojourns (for work, leisure, air travel or during car/train journeys) justifies the question of their tolerance, especially in people with pre-existing respiratory disease. Reduced barometric pressure and abrupt variations in temperature and inhaled air density may be responsible for modifications affecting the respiratory system and, in fine, oxygenation. These modifications may compromise altitude tolerance, further worsen respiratory dysfunction and render physical exercise more difficult. In obstructive lung disease, altitude is associated with gas exchange i

Breathlessness, disability, and exercise tolerance were assessed in 26 patients with severe chronic airflow limitation (forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) less than or equal to 1 litre) divided into two groups--15 patients who were normocapnic (pressure of arterial carbon dioxide (Paco2) less than 5.5 kPa (less than 41.4 mm Hg)), and 11 patients who were hypercapnic (Paco2 greater than 6 kPa (greater than than 45.1 mm Hg)). The two groups were well matched for spirometric values (FEV1 0.59 1 and 0.62 1, respectively). All of the hypercapnic patients could improve blood gas tensions …

Factors affecting worker tolerance of respiratory personal protective devices are inadequately understood. This study evaluates whether respirator-type loads affected the switch from nasal to oral breathing. Eleven healthy subjects were studied under progressive exercise conditions, using a respirator full-face mask with inspiratory resistance (I), pressure breathing (P) (10 cm H2O end-expiratory pressure), or no load (N). A rapid-response thermistor was used to determine whether flow was predominantly oral or nasal. Both P and I increased the percentage of time that breathing was predominantl

We identified a case of probable mitochondrial myopathy (MM) in a soldier with dyspnea and reduced exercise tolerance through cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) following Southwest Asia (SWA) deployment. Muscle biopsy showed myopathic features. We compared demographic, occupational exposure, and clinical characteristics in symptomatic military deployers with and without probable MM diagnosed by CPET criteria. We evaluated 235 symptomatic military personnel who deployed to SWA and/or Afghanistan between 2010 and 2021. Of these, 168 underwent cycle ergometer maximal CPET with an indwelling …

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a common pregnancy complication characterized by maternal hyperglycemia, negatively impacts offspring health. Skeletal muscle, a critical tissue for glucose and lipid metabolism, is especially vulnerable to prenatal environmental insults. However, the effects of intrauterine hyperglycemia (IUHG) on offspring skeletal muscle development remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of IUHG on skeletal muscle development in offspring and evaluate whether postnatal exercise could mitigate these effects.

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIAn), first reported in 1979, is a condition defined by the consumption of a trigger food with temporally related exercise that results in an immediate hypersensitivity (type 1) reaction in the setting of the trigger food being tolerated independent of exercise and exercise being tolerated in the absence of trigger food consumption. The most common trigger food in the west is wheat and shellfish in Asia. The exact mechanism of FDEIAn is unknown, though several hypotheses exist. Cofactors such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, alcohol c

The effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in patients with heart failure (HF) remain controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the efficacy of HIIT versus moderate-intensity continuous aerobic training (MCT) on exercise tolerance in patients with HF. We searched for studies published up to 4 March 2022 in Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library with no limitations on data, language, or publication status. We included randomized controlled trials comparing the efficacy of HIIT and MCT on peak oxygen uptake (VO2), as a measure of exercise tol…

Tribbles 3 (TRB3) is a pseudokinase and its expression has been shown to disrupt glucose metabolism through the inhibition of Akt under obese and diabetic conditions. We recently found that overexpression of TRB3 in mouse skeletal muscle decreased skeletal muscle mass and function, leading to muscle atrophy. Here, we examined whether TRB3 affects exercise training-induced skeletal muscle adaptation. We trained muscle-specific TRB3 transgenic (TG) and wild-type (WT) littermates using a voluntary wheel running protocol for 6 weeks and found that TG mice ran significantly less weekly distances th

The role of the carotid body in the ventilatory changes of exercise is reviewed. Peripheral chemoreceptor function was studied in 20 patients with chronic airways obstruction. The patients were treated double-blind and randomly allocated to placebo and almitrine bismesylate 50 mg b.d. before undertaking an exercise programme at day 0 and after 30 and 60 days of therapy. Patients on almitrine therapy had an improved resting arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) which was maintained during exercise. A statistically significant improvement of effort tolerance was observed after 60 days treatment with al

Persistent dorsal displacement of the soft palate was diagnosed in 2 Thoroughbred horses examined because of decreased exercise tolerance and a respiratory noise during strenuous exercise. The persistent dorsal displacement of the soft palate was caused by an epiglottis that was approximately 2/3 normal size, and thus was incapable of maintaining the soft palate in a normal subepiglottic position. Contrast pharyngography suggested a primary epiglottic abnormality. Visual assessment of the lesion was accomplished by exploratory ventral laryngotomy and endoscopy of the oropharynx per os. Surgica…

Chronic airflow limitation, caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or by asthma, is believed to change the shape and the position of the diaphragm due to an increase in lung volume. We have made a comparison of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of diaphragm in supine position with pulmonary functions, respiratory muscle function and exercise tolerance. We have studied the differences between patients with COPD, patients with asthma, and healthy subjects. Most interestingly we found the lung hyperinflation leads to the changes in diaphragmatic excursions during the breathing cycl…
