Disclosure, social support, and meaning-based coping among Omani mothers living with breast cancer: a phenomenological qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Mothers diagnosed with breast cancer in collectivist, faith-oriented societies face dilemmas regarding the timing, manner, and extent of disclosure of their illness to their children and extended family members. However, evidence addressing this issue within Arab contexts remains limited. This phenomenological qualitative study explored how Omani mothers with breast cancer navigate disclosure, interpret familial and communal responses, and employ coping strategies within sociocultural and religious frameworks. METHODS: In-depth semistructured interviews were conducted in Arabic with …

Phylogenomics and the evolutionary history of the Oxyurida (pinworms).

Pinworms (Nematoda: Oxyurida) are among the first documented zooparasitic nematodes, and some species are of veterinary, medical, and economic importance. However, the basic molecular phylogenetic framework for the Oxyurida is far from comprehensive, and the origin and early evolutionary history of the group remain little understood. In this study, phylogenomic analyses of the Oxyurida, involving the most comprehensive family-level taxon sampling of pinworms to date, were performed based on the universal single-copy orthologues and the mitochondrial protein-coding genes. Phylogenomic results y

Genotype and Clinical Phenotype of Monocarboxylate Transporter 1 Deficiency in Three Palestinian Children: Report of Two Novel Variants in the SLC16A1 Gene.

Monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) deficiency (OMIM# 616095), caused by variants in the SLC16A1 gene (OMIM# 600682), is responsible for the transport of monocarboxylates across the plasma membrane. This condition is recognized as a rare genetic cause of impaired ketone body utilization in extrahepatic tissues, resulting in recurrent ketoacidosis triggered by fasting and infection. To date, only 17 patients with this disorder have been identified. Individuals with homozygous variants typically present at a younger age, exhibit developmental delays, and experience more severe ketoacidosis. We

High level of expressed emotions in the family of people with schizophrenia: has a covert abrasive behaviours component been overlooked?

BACKGROUND: High expressed emotion (EE) in a patient's family is a known risk factor of relapse in schizophrenia. The three components of high EE - criticism, hostility and emotional over-involvement - were developed through a data-driven approach and a focus on overt abrasive behaviours. The influence of covert abrasive behaviours has not been explored. AIMS AND METHODS: This study aims to explore both overt and covert abrasive behaviours through semi-structured interviews conducted with 22 people with schizophrenia, who were recruited through iterative purposive sampling. RESULTS: Thematic

Mapping Out Autoimmunity Control in Primary Immune Regulatory Disorders.

There is a growing understanding of the clinical overlap between primary immune deficiency and autoimmunity. An atypical or treatment-refractory clinical presentation of autoimmunity may in fact signal an underlying congenital condition of primary immune dysregulation (an inborn error of immunity). Detailed profiling of the family history is critical in the diagnostic process and must not be limited to the occurrence of frequent or atypical infections, but additionally should include inquiries into chronic forms of autoimmunity, hyperinflammation, and malignancy. A genetic and a functional dia

Sharing more than friendship - transmission of NDM-5 ST167 and CTX-M-9 ST69 Escherichia coli between dogs and humans in a family, Finland, 2015.

IntroductionCarbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) have rarely been reported in dogs, and never in animals in Finland. However, in April 2015, two meropenem-resistant Escherichia coli were identified from two dogs in one family. Both dogs suffered from chronic otitis externa. Methods: Epidemiological and molecular investigations (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence typing) were conducted to investigate the source of infection and transmission routes. Results: In both dogs and one family member New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-5)-producing multidrug-resis

Chromosome 5 and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: Linkage in a large pedigree and association study of six candidates in the region.

Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by both motor and vocal tics. In our previous genome scan for TS we identified evidence for linkage to the centromeric region of chromosome 5 in a single large family of 32 individuals with 10 family members with TS or chronic multiple tics (CMT). In this paper we report further analyses of the 5p-centromeric region in this pedigree. An additional 11 family members were identified and screened for TS. Using a set of 14 microsatellite markers we refined the linked region to a approximately 28 Mb interval between th

Congenital psoriasis: case report and literature review.

While childhood psoriasis is fairly common, congenital psoriasis appears to be rare and has not been well characterized. We present a patient with histologically confirmed congenital psoriasis. By reviewing the literature, we aim to both define this disease and compare it to infantile and childhood psoriasis. Electronic searches found articles reporting patients with biopsy-proven congenital psoriasis. We recorded clinical features, such as family history, anatomic involvement, and disease severity. We compared these data with previous descriptions of infantile and childhood psoriasis. We incl

Wide phylogenetic distribution of Scorpine and long-chain beta-KTx-like peptides in scorpion venoms: identification of "orphan" components.

Scorpine and toxins specific for potassium channels of the family beta (beta-Ktx) are two types of structurally related scorpion venom components, characterized by an unusually long extended N-terminal segment, followed by a Cys-rich domain with some resemblance to other scorpion toxins. In this communication, we report evidence supporting the ubiquitous presence of Scorpine and beta-KTx-like polypeptides and their precursors in scorpions of the genus Tityus of the family Buthidae, but also included is the first example of such peptides in scorpions from the family Iuridae. Seven new beta-KTxs

A Novel Mutation in the ADAMTS10 Associated with Weil-Marchesani Syndrome with a Unique Presentation of Developed Membranes Causing Severe Stenosis of the Supra Pulmonic, Supramitral, and Subaortic Areas in the Heart.

Weill-Marchesani syndrome (WMS) is a rare genetic inherited disorder with autosomal recessive and dominant modes of inheritance. WMS is characterized by the association of short stature, brachydactyly, joint stiffness, eye anomalies, including microspherophakia and ectopia of the lenses, and, occasionally, heart defects. We investigated the genetic cause of a unique and novel presentation of heart-developed membranes in the supra-pulmonic, supramitral, and subaortic areas, creating stenosis that recurred after their surgical resection in four patients from one extended consanguineous family. DNA processing by the MOBH family relaxase TraI encoded within the gonococcal genetic island.

Relaxases of the MOBH family are often found on large plasmids, genetic islands and integrative conjugative elements. Many members of this family contain an N-terminal relaxase domain (TraI_2) followed by a disordered middle part and a C-terminal domain of unknown function (TraI_2_C). The TraI_2 domain contains two putative metal-binding motifs, an HD domain motif and an alternative 3H motif. TraI, encoded within the gonococcal genetic island of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is the prototype of the MOBH family. SAXS experiments showed that TraI_2 and TraI_2_C form globular structures separated by an

Defective activation of the MAPK/ERK pathway, leading to PARP1 and DNMT1 dysregulation, is a common defect in IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein purpura.

Studies on IgA nephropathy (IgAN) have identified, through GWAS, linkage analysis, and pathway scanning, molecular defects in familial and sporadic IgAN patients. In our previous study, we identified a novel variant in the SPRY2 gene that segregates with the disease in one large family. The functional characterization of this variant led us to discover that the MAPK/ERK pathway was defective not only in this family, but also in two sporadic IgAN patients wild type for SPRY2. In the present study, we have deepened the molecular analysis of the MAPK/ERK pathway and extended our evaluation to a l

Moderators of subjective response to alcohol in the human laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Subjective response (SR) to alcohol represents a biobehavioral risk factor for heavy drinking and for developing alcohol use disorder (AUD). Identifying moderators of SR have been hindered by small sample sizes that are often used in alcohol administration studies. METHODS: This study combined data from multiple alcohol administration trials to test whether sex, family history of alcohol problems, and impulsivity (via delay discounting) predict SR to alcohol, comprised of four domains: stimulation, sedation, negative affect, and craving. Non-treatment-seeking heavy drinkers (N = 2

Family-based whole-exome sequencing identifies novel loss-of-function mutations of FBN1 for Marfan syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an inherited connective tissue disorder affecting the ocular, skeletal and cardiovascular systems. Previous studies of MFS have demonstrated the association between genetic defects and clinical manifestations. Our purpose was to investigate the role of novel genetic variants in determining MFS clinical phenotypes. METHODS: We sequenced the whole exome of 19 individuals derived from three Han Chinese families. The sequencing data were analyzed by a standard pipeline. Variants were further filtered against the public database and an in-house database. Then,

Germline SMARCB1 mutation predisposes to multiple meningiomas and schwannomas with preferential location of cranial meningiomas at the falx cerebri.

Schwannomatosis is a rare hereditary cancer syndrome in which patients develop multiple non-vestibular schwannomas. The chromatin remodelling gene SMARCB1 (also known as INI1, hSNF5, and BAF47) has been identified as a schwannomatosis predisposing gene, being involved in a subset of sporadic and familial cases. Recent studies have shown that SMARCB1 may also be involved in the development of multiple meningiomas. Previously, we demonstrated that the SMARCB1 exon 2 missense mutation c.143 C > T segregates with the presence of meningiomas in five members of a large family with multiple meningiom
