We studied 1160 consecutive craniofacial injuries sustained by unhelmeted motorbike riders in Taipei, Taiwan, between 1990 and 1993, in order to investigate the distribution, type and severity of these injuries. The average age of the victims was 31 years (SD 13.2), with 84 per cent of them being between ages 16 and 45. The facial and cranial areas were defined as being separated by the line between eyebrows and ears. The incidence of facial injuries was the same as that of cranial injuries (both 68 per cent). While facial injuries occurred most often in the cheek and chin, most cranial injuri…

BACKGROUND: Patients with panfacial fractures comprise a small portion of the overall facial fracture patient population. Because of the for … t difference in day of operation for the management of facial fractures between those with isolated facial injuries and those with other concomitant injuries (hospital day 2.1 vs. hospital day 2.9, not significant).
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant injuries to all parts of the body are found in patients with panfacial trauma. In our experience, these injuries do not sig …

BACKGROUND: After clinical evaluation in the emergency department (ED), facial burn patients are usually intubated to protect their airways. However, the possibility of unnecessary intubation or delayed intubation after admission exists. Objective criteria for the evaluation of inhalation injury and the need for airway protection in facial burn patients are needed.
METHODS: Facial burn patients between January 2013 and May 2016 were reviewed. Patients who were and were not intubated in the ED were compared. All the intubated patients received routine bronchoscopy and laboratory tests to evalu

Although orthopedic injury has been reported to be the most frequent injury associated with facial trauma, their relationship has not been sufficiently evaluated in the literature. To evaluate this relationship, we compared 263 patients with concomitant facial and orthopedic injuries with 2006 patients with facial injuries alone. The rate of associated orthopedic injuries was 11.5%. Motor vehicle accidents, falls, mandibular fractures, and Le Fort I fractures increased the chance of sustaining orthopedic injuries nearly 17-, 15-, 10-, 4.4-, and 4.5-fold, respectively. Most fractures occurred i…

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with traumatic craniomaxillofacial fractures often have occult concomitant injuries. This study was designed to determine whether facial fracture patterns are associated with a particular constellation of concomitant head and neck injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 4786 consecutive patients diagnosed with maxillofacial fractures at a dedicated urban trauma center from 1998 to 2005 was conducted; maxillofacial fractures and cervical spine injuries were grouped by dividing the craniomaxillofacial skeleton and cervical spine into thirds. Univariate and m

The effects of seat belts and the use of alcohol and drugs have been studied as etiological factors in facial trauma to occupants of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). During a 15-month period, 461 patients were admitted to a regional trauma center as a result of injuries sustained in MVAs. Two hundred thirty-seven (51%) of these patients had facial trauma. Facial trauma was the single most common injury in these patients. One hundred eighty-five patients (78%) had major soft tissue injury, and 52 patients (22%) had facial bone fractures. Forty-two of 237 patients (18%) with facial trauma were we

In contrast to the number of reports in the literature describing high velocity injuries of the maxillo-facial region, there are relatively few which deal with civilian type gunshot injuries. The purpose of this study was to undertake a retrospective analysis of 40 cases of low-velocity hand-gun injuries of the maxillo-facial region. The majority of cases were due to assault followed by accidental shootings and failed suicide attempts. Injuries ranged from mild soft tissue damage without fractures to severe, comminuted fractures of the facial bones. In some cases, soft tissue damage was severe

Although maxillofacial injuries account for a large number of hospital admissions, there appear to be only a few reports detailing the etiology and pattern of facial injuries in women. To delineate this problem, we performed a retrospective chart review of all women admitted to University of California, Davis Medical Center with traumatic facial injuries from July 1, 1990, to June 30, 1992. Motor vehicle accidents were the primary etiology, followed by assaults. The mandible was the most commonly injured facial bone. In a closer evaluation of female patients injured by assault, we found inadeq…

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial injuries comprising hard tissue as well as soft tissue injuries can be associated with traumatic brain injuries due to the impact of forces transmitted through the head and neck. To date, the role of maxillofacial injury on brain injury has not been properly documented with some saying it has a protective function on the brain while others opposing this idea.
AIM: This cross-sectional retrospective study evaluated all patients with maxillofacial injuries. The aim of the study was to analyze the occurrence and relationship of maxillofacial injuries with traumatic brai…

Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine which types of facial injuries in traumatic patients' wounds cause difficult intubation for anesthesiology team. By anticipating potential complications with airway management, the surgeons can be better prepared for emergent cricothyrotomy if needed. This could include prior to the planned procedure in the operating room (OR) as well as in emergent conditions in trauma bay. Methods Trauma patients with facial injuries in a level II trauma center from January 2007 to September 2017 that required intubation were evaluated for types of facial in…
