The hypoglossal motor nucleus is one of the efferent components of the neural network underlying the tongue prehension behavior of Ranid frogs. Although the appropriate pattern of the motor activity is determined by motor pattern generators, sensory inputs can modify the ongoing motor execution. Combination of fluorescent tracers were applied to investigate whether there are direct contacts between the afferent fibers of the trigeminal, facial, vestibular, glossopharyngeal-vagal, hypoglossal, second cervical spinal nerves and the hypoglossal motoneurons. Using confocal laser scanning microscop

Abnormalities of the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) system may induce respiratory disorders. We examined which regions in the rostral medulla are important for the effect of 5-HT on the frequency of respiratory-like nerve (fR-like) activity by transecting the preparations at different levels near the facial nucleus (nVII) in newborn rat brainstem-spinal cord preparations. The fR-like activity at the fourth cervical ventral root (C4) of the Pons-medulla-spinal cord preparations in 2-3-day-old rats (n=25) was monitored at 26°C, and the change in fR-like activity in response to application…

Bulbospinal neurons in the ventral medulla play important roles in the regulation of sympathetic outflow. Physiological evidence suggests th … ulbospinal tyrosine hydroxylase-negative neurons, which were more common in sections containing the facial nucleus. In the raphe pallidus, the parapyramidal region, and the marginal layer, 98% of bulbospinal tryptophan hydroxylase-positive neurons contained NR1 immunoreactivity. NR1 was also present in all of the bulbospinal tryptophan hydroxylase-negative neuro …

OBJECT: Meige syndrome is characterized by blepharospasm, cervical dystonia, and facial oromandibular dystonia. The medical treatment of this condition is largely unsuccessful over time and is a major source of decreased quality of life in those patients suffering from this disease. Recent advances in the application of deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery techniques for many disorders have prompted several recent reports of DBS for medically refractory cases of Meige syndrome. While the etiology for this disorder is unknown, it is considered by many investigators to be a form of idiopathic to

Visual impairment is commonly reported as a consequence of heavy prenatal ethanol exposure in humans. Children generally display characteristic cranio-facial dysmorphology and represent typical severe cases of foetal alcohol syndrome. Binge-like rodent model systems have concluded that third trimester equivalent ethanol exposure results in widespread apoptosis in the visual system from the retina to the visual cortex. Neither clinical nor animal studies address the consequences of more moderate prenatal ethanol exposure on the visual system. The current study uses a naturalistic and voluntary

Trigeminal neuralgia is a disorder of paroxysmal and severely disabling facial pain and continues to be a real therapeutic challenge. At present there are few effective drugs. Here we have evaluated the effects of the synthetic cannabinoid WIN 55,212-2 on mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia in a rat model of trigeminal neuropathic pain produced by a chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the infraorbital branch of the trigeminal nerve (ION). Relative to sham operation controls, rats with the CCI-ION consistently displayed hyperresponsiveness to von Frey filament and heat stimulation of

The etiology of idiopathic cranial nerve palsies often remains unresolved. It has been hypothesised that viral reactivation of herpesviruses in the corresponding nuclei in the brainstem is the cause. We investigated the distribution of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) in nuclei that are associated with peripheral sensory ganglia [oculomotor (nIII), facial (nVII) nuclei] and in nuclei that are not associated with peripheral sensory ganglia [trochlear (nIV), abducens (nVI), and hypoglossal (nXII) nuclei] of five human brainstems. Samples of the cranial nerve n

PURPOSE: To localize the sites of HSV1 latency in mice after a primary infection induced by injection into the lip and to assess their connection to the eye.
METHODS: The SC16 strain of HSV1, or a recombinant virus containing the HSV1 latency-associated transcript (LAT)-promoter driving expression of the LacZ reporter gene, were injected into the left upper lip. Tissues from animals killed at 6, 28, 180, and 720 days postinoculation (dpi) were analyzed for LATs, either by in situ hybridization (ISH) or by identifying LAT-promoter-driven transgene expression. HSV1 antigens were detected by imm

Three patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 who had undergone previous cochlear nerve tumour removal were implanted with the Nucleus 21-channel auditory brainstem implant (ABI). The time intervals between tumour removal and implantation were 4, 5, and 7 years, respectively. Total bilateral deafness was confirmed before implantation. One patient was also blind after acute intracranial hypertension. The translabyrinthine approach was used in all cases. The choice of side for implantation depended on pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging study, the facial nerve function, the presence of recur

Prior work has established that hypoglossal motoneurons (HMs) change postnatally in their response to serotonin (5-HT), in part as a result of a decline in expression of 5-HT(1A) receptors. In the current study, two issues were addressed. First, using in situ hybridization we found that transient expression of 5-HT(1A) receptors occurs in other populations of brainstem (facial and trigeminal) and spinal (cervical and lumbar) motoneurons. Second, the participation of motoneuronal afferent (serotonergic) and efferent (neuromuscular) innervation in inducing and maintaining this decline in express

In this paper, the autopsy findings of a 78-year-old man mimicking primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) are reported. His clinical symptoms were slowly progressive spasticity, pseudobulbar palsy and character change. He died of sepsis 32 months after protracting the disease. The autopsy revealed severe atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes. The histological findings were severe neuronal loss with gliosis in the precentral gyrus and left temporal lobe tip, loss of Betz cell, prominent demyelination throughout of the corticospinal tract, axonal swelling in the cerebral peduncule, severe degenerat

Trigeminal nerves collecting sensory information from the orofacial area synapse on second-order neurons in the dorsal horn of subnucleus caudalis and cervical C1/C2 spinal cord (Vc/C2, or trigeminocervical complex), which is critical for sensory information processing. Injury to the trigeminal nerves may cause maladaptive changes in synaptic connectivity that plays an important role in chronic pain development. Here we examined whether injury to the infraorbital nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerves, led to synaptic ultrastructural changes when the injured animals have developed neuropathi

Patients with Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) may develop a variety of involuntary movements. We report a 26-year-old woman who presented with a 3-year history of progressive, continuous myoclonus of the left side of the face and left arm as well as left spastic hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed right hemisphere and basal ganglia atrophy, and 24-hour electroencephalogram demonstrated diffuse slowing with random sharp waves in both hemispheres. An 18-fluoro-deoxy-glucose positron emission tomography scan indicated hypometabolism of the right cerebral hemisphere, including

Pain is a multistep process that originates in the peripheral nervous system at the site of injury, is transmitted and processed within the central nervous system, and is perceived at the level of the cerebral cortex. Each of these steps in pain transmission is subject to intervention, with the possibility of reducing or blocking the nociceptive information to result in decreased pain. Based on knowledge of pain processes, dentists can use analgesic strategies to prevent or reduce pain.

Post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathy (PTTN) is a debilitating sensory disorder resulting from trigeminal nerve damage for which effective therapies are lacking.Pretreatment with neutralizing antibodies against high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), a damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP), has shown promise in preventing PTTN development; however, the specific receptor mediating HMGB1-driven neuropathic pain in this context remains undefined. This study investigates the role of the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE), a key HMGB1 receptor, in PTTN pathogenesis using a distal in

Descending pain-modulatory systems, either inhibitory or facilitatory, play a critical role in both acute and chronic pain. Compared with serotonin and norepinephrine, little is known about the function of dopamine (DA). We characterized the anatomical organization of descending DA pathways from hypothalamic A11 nuclei to the medullary dorsal horn (MDH) and investigated their role in trigeminal pain. Immunochemistry analysis reveals that A11 is a heterogeneous nucleus that contains at least 3 neuronal phenotypes, DA, GABA, and alpha-calcitonin gene-related peptide (α-CGRP) neurons, exhibiting

Stapedius motoneurons (SMN) mediate the contraction of the stapedius muscle, which protects the inner ear from injury and reduces the masking effects of background noise. A variety of inputs to SMNs are known to exist, but their terminal ultrastructure has not been investigated. We characterized the synaptic terminals on retrogradely labeled SMNs found just ventromedial to the facial motor nucleus. About 80% of the terminals contained round synaptic vesicles. One type (Sm Rnd) had small, round vesicles filling the terminal with occasional dense core vesicles and formed an asymmetric synapse. S

This paper describes audiologic, electrophysiologic, and medical test results for a now 10-year-old girl who has had 45 episodes of reversible, sudden sensorineural hearing loss over the last 8 years. Episodes have lasted from 6 to 72 hours and often have been accompanied by a mild illness. Acoustic immittance measures have been consistent with normal middle-ear function with the exception of absent ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic reflexes. Mechanically evoked perioral reflex activity was markedly asymmetric following lower lip stimulation. The asymmetry of R1 activation between right a

Occlusion refers to the contact relationship between the upper and lower teeth. Its biomechanical properties influence motor function, most often in the orofacial and cervical regions, and the patient's psychological well-being as well. In this review, we summarized age-related changes in occlusion and the corresponding clinical management and preventive strategies from three perspectives-the functional characteristics of normal occlusion and their age-related changes, the effects of abnormal occlusion on health and the potential neurophysiological mechanisms involved, and age-related changes
