Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Antibiotic Use and Resistance among Poultry Farmers in Nepal.

The abuse and misuse of antibiotics is one of the main drivers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Globally, AMR in food-producing animals is a significant public health concern. This study, therefore, assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to antibiotic usage (AMU) and AMR among poultry farmers in Nepal. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 605 poultry farmers from six districts of Nepal from May to June 2022 to assess the status of knowledge, attitude, as well as practices toward prudent antibiotic usage (AMU) and AMR. The majority of the participants in our study were f…

Bilateral peroneal nerve palsy due to prolonged squatting in farmers: clinical and electrophysiological outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Peroneal neuropathy is the most common mononeuropathy of the lower extremities. However, bilateral peroneal nerve palsy (BPNP) is extremely rare due to prolonged squatting. We aimed to evaluate the clinical-electrophysiological findings in patients with BPNP caused by long-term squatting for cotton harvesting in our region. METHODS: Eight patients (16 limbs), admitted to our center between February 2018 and March 2021 with bilateral foot drop after prolonged squatting, were included in our study. The clinical and electrophysiological findings were re-evaluated six months later.

Recall of exposure in UK farmers and pesticide applicators: trends with follow-up time.

BACKGROUND: Occupational epidemiological studies on pesticide use commonly rely on self-reported questionnaire or interview data to assess exposure. Insight into recall accuracy is important, as misclassification of exposures due to imperfect recall can bias risk estimates. METHODS: We assessed the ability of workers in three UK cohorts (Prospective Investigation of Pesticide Applicators' Health [PIPAH], Pesticide Users' Health Study [PUHS], and Study of Health in Agricultural Work [SHAW]) to remember their working history related to pesticide exposure over time periods ranging from 3 to 14 y

Bootstrapping random forest and CHAID for prediction of white spot disease among shrimp farmers.

Technology is playing an important role is healthcare particularly as it relates to disease prevention and detection. This is evident in the COVID-19 era as different technologies were deployed to test, detect and track patients and ensure COVID-19 protocol compliance. The White Spot Disease (WSD) is a very contagious disease caused by virus. It is widespread among shrimp farmers due to its mode of transmission and source. Considering the growing concern about the severity of the disease, this study provides a predictive model for diagnosis and detection of WSD among shrimp farmers using visua…

Anthropometrics, Hemoglobin Status and Dietary Micronutrient Intake among Tanzanian and Mozambican Pigeon Pea Farmers.

Inadequate consumption of micronutrient-dense and protein-rich foods such as vegetables, legumes and meat is an important contributing cause for anemia and deficiencies of vitamin A and iron in rural communities of Tanzania and Mozambique. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the nutritional status (anthropometrics and hemoglobin) and diets in particular micronutrient intake of female and male pigeon pea farmers from Lindi, Tanzania, and Gurué, the Zambézia province of Mozambique. A total of 1526 farmers (669 from Tanzania, 857 from Mozambique) were studied, of whom 16% were overwei…

Accounting for farmers' control decisions in a model of pathogen spread through animal trade.

Accounting for individual decisions in mechanistic epidemiological models remains a challenge, especially for unregulated endemic animal diseases for which control is not compulsory. We propose a new integrative model by combining two sub-models. The first one for the dynamics of a livestock epidemic on a metapopulation network, grounded on demographic and animal trade data. The second one for farmers' behavior regarding the adoption of a control measure against the disease spread in their herd. The measure is specified as a protective vaccine with given economic implications, and the model is…

Knowledge and attitudes are important factors in farmers' choice of lamb tail docking length.

BACKGROUND: Tail docking is common practice in the sheep industry to prevent soiling of the breech and flystrike. To ensure optimal healing … and the surveys were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. RESULTS: In total, 57 per cent of farmers were classed as docking tails short. Short tail docking appeared to be influenced by unawareness of the recommended length and docking at a length that shearers approve of. Other potential factors included lack of knowledge of negative health conseq …

Comparative Analysis of Pesticide Use Determinants Among Smallholder Farmers From Costa Rica and Uganda.

Pesticides are used globally in agriculture and pose a threat to the health of farmers, communities, and the environment. Smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries have generally a low socio-economic status and educational level. Consequently, they are particularly vulnerable to negative impacts of pesticides on their health, yields, or land. In a Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices study, we compared the pest management practices between a market-oriented farming system in Zarcero County, Costa Rica, and a subsistence-based farming system in Wakiso District, Uganda. We conducted …

Lifetime Pesticide Use and Antinuclear Antibodies in Male Farmers From the Agricultural Health Study.

Farming and pesticide use have been associated with systemic autoimmune diseases, and while certain organochlorine insecticides and other pesticides are suspected to influence risk, the role of specific pesticides in the development of systemic autoimmunity is not known. We measured serum antinuclear autoantibodies (ANA) by immunofluorescence on Hep-2 cells in 668 male farmers in the study of Biomarkers of Exposure and Effect in Agriculture (BEEA; 2010-2013), an Agricultural Health Study (AHS) subcohort. We examined ANA in relation to lifetime use of 46 pesticides first reported at AHS enrollm…

Knowledge, attitude and practices relating to zoonotic diseases among livestock farmers in Punjab, India.

Zoonotic diseases cause significant health and economic impact in developing countries such as India. Many zoonotic diseases are prevalent in the livestock and as an occupational zoonosis in the livestock farmers in India. Lack of knowledge on the disease transmission, prevention and control measures is a potential high risk for the occurrence of zoonotic diseases in the livestock and its keepers in India. We conducted this study to understand knowledge, attitude and practices of livestock farmers regarding zoonoses. Five villages from each of the 22 districts of the state were conveniently se…

Prevalence of serological response to Borrelia burgdorferi in farmers from eastern and central Poland.

Lyme borreliosis (Lyme disease) caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato spirochete is the most common tick-borne infection manifested by a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms. In Poland, the preventive health care does not comprise individual farmers as it is practiced in foresters. The objective of this study was to evaluate the exposure of Polish farmers to infection with B. burgdorferi, based on serological screening test and epidemiological investigation. A total of 3,597 farmers were examined for the presence of B. burgdorferi antibodies, as well as interviewed regarding exposure to …

Opinion of Belgian Egg Farmers on Hen Welfare and Its Relationship with Housing Type.

As of 2012, the EU has banned the use of conventional cages (CC) for laying hens, causing a shift in housing systems. This study's aim was to gain insight into farmers' opinions on hen health and welfare in their current housing systems. A survey was sent to 218 Belgian egg farmers, of which 127 (58.3%) responded, with 84 still active as egg farmer. Hen welfare tended to be less important in choosing the housing system for farmers with cage than with non-cage systems. Respondents currently using cage systems were more satisfied with hen health than respondents with non-cage systems. Reported m…

Pesticide use and adult-onset asthma among male farmers in the Agricultural Health Study.

Although specific pesticides have been associated with wheeze in farmers, little is known about pesticides and asthma. Data from 19,704 male farmers in the Agricultural Health Study were used to evaluate lifetime use of 48 pesticides and prevalent adult-onset asthma, defined as doctor-diagnosed asthma after the age of 20 yrs. Asthma cases were categorised as allergic (n = 127) and nonallergic (n = 314) based on their history of eczema or hay fever. Polytomous logistic regression, controlling for age, state, smoking and body mass, was used to assess pesticide associations. High pesticide exposu…
