Psychosocial functioning in children of alcoholic fathers, depressed fathers and control fathers.

Children of alcoholics are often viewed as having major psychological problems resulting from their interactions within disturbed family structures. Most studies, however, have selected alcoholics from multiproblem families in which it is difficult to disentangle the impact of alcoholism from concomitant psychosocial and psychiatric problems. Further, few studies have used psychometrically sound measures of alcoholism or child functioning. In this investigation, children of alcoholic, depressed and control (social drinkers and not depressed) fathers were assessed by parents on the Child Behavi

Family structure and depressive symptoms in men preceding and following the birth of a child. The Avon Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood Study Team.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence and etiology of pre- and postpartum depressive symptoms in women in a variety of family forms have been well documented, but relatively little research has been conducted on the adjustment of their male partners. The authors' goals in this study were 1) to estimate rates of depression during the pregnancy and 8 weeks following the birth of a child in a large representative community sample of fathers in different family structures and 2) to explore the role of stressful life events, social and emotional support, the quality of the partner relationship, and socioeconom

[Intrafamilial contagion with the hepatitis B virus].

BACKGROUND: A study of the intrafamilial transmission of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and its relationship with the viral replication and epidemiological factors. METHODS: The intrafamilial transmission of 106 chronic carriers of HBV was evaluated: 79 were asymptomatic carriers (AC) and 27 had chronic liver disease (CLD). Overall 347 relatives of the first group individuals and 112 of the second group were investigated. In the index cases, all HBV markers were investigated, and also DNA-HBV in those with CLD. In the relatives, HBsAg, HBsAc and HBcAc were investigated. Also, a survey to evaluat

Mexican-origin parent and child reported neighborhood factors and youth substance use.

BACKGROUND: Structural oppression affects health behaviors through residence in suboptimal neighborhoods and exposure to community violence. Youth and parents report perceptions of neighborhood factors that can affect youth substance use behaviors. Given that Latinx youth report higher levels of perceived community violence than other racial and ethnic groups, it is imperative to examine how youth- and parent-perceived neighborhood-level factors may relate to youth substance use. METHODS: Data were collected using clinical interviews with family triads (fathers, mothers, and youth) and parent

Posttraumatic stress disorder and its cross-generational familial relationship with drug use disorder and alcohol use disorder: an extended Swedish adoption study.

Objective: Information on how parental risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relates to their children's risk for drug use disorder (DUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is limited. This study is the first to utilize an extended adoption design which can address questions about the degree of, and sources of, cross-generational and cross-disorder transmission of PTSD and substance use disorders.Method: We examined diagnoses using Swedish National registries for parents and their adult offspring (n = 2,194,171, born 1960-1992) from six types of families (intact (1), not lived with biologi

The intergenerational transmission of gambling and other addictive behaviors: Implications of the mediating effects of cross-addiction frequency and problems.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the degree to which perceptions of familial and household participation in gambling and other addictive behaviors in youth was associated with frequency and problem severity of gambling, alcohol and/or drug use in participants as adults. METHOD: The study measured perceived frequency of gambling, alcohol use, drug use and other potentially addictive behaviors in family/household members and the frequency and problem severity of gambling, alcohol, and drugs in an epidemiological sample of adults 18 and older (N = 3,499; m = 48.26 %, f = 51.74 %). Serotonergic function in cocaine addicts: prolactin responses to sequential D,L-fenfluramine challenges.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies have shown that cocaine produces alterations in serotonergic function but our knowledge of the serotonergic alterations due to cocaine abuse in humans is still fragmentary. We therefore assessed the central serotonergic responsivity of cocaine addicts and control subjects by neuroendocrine challenges with the serotonin releaser and reuptake inhibitor D,L-fenfluramine (FEN). METHODS: Plasma prolactin levels following a 60 mg oral dose of FEN and placebo were studied in 25 hospitalized male cocaine addicts and 13 healthy male subjects. Control subjects underwent

Study protocol of the COMPARE-Interaction study: the impact of maternal comorbid depression and anxiety disorders in the peripartum period on child development.

INTRODUCTION: To date, there are only few studies that compare the consequences of peripartum maternal depressive disorders (PD) versus depressive with comorbid anxiety disorders (PDCA) for infant and child development. As comorbidity is associated with greater impairment and symptom severity related to the primary diagnosis, comorbidity in mothers might raise their offspring's risk of developing internalising or externalising disorders even more than has been noted in conjunction with PD alone. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study aims to analyse the impact of parental psychopathology, particula

Nurturant-involved parenting and adolescent substance use: Examining an internalizing pathway through adolescent social anxiety symptoms and substance refusal efficacy.

Research has clearly established the important role of parents in preventing substance use among early adolescents. Much of this work has focused on deviance (e.g., antisocial behavior, delinquency, and oppositional behavior) as a central pathway linking parenting behaviors and early adolescent substance use. This study proposed an alternative pathway; using a four-wave longitudinal design, we examined whether nurturant-involved parenting (Fall sixth grade) was inversely associated with adolescent drunkenness, marijuana use, and cigarette use (eighth grade) through social anxiety symptoms (Spr

Refusal of male partner responsibility and pregnancy support: prevalence, associated factors and health outcomes in a cross sectional study in Harare, Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of fathers refusing responsibility during pregnancy has not received adequate attention in African studies. This paper assesses associated factors and pregnancy-related outcomes when fathers refuse to support partners' pregnancies and undertake parental responsibilities. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 15-49-year-old postnatal (1-6 weeks) women was conducted at six urban health facilities in Harare. Participants were interviewed about their male partners' refusal to support their pregnancies and parenting, bride price payments (indicating marriage commitment),

Biallelic ZNF335 mutations cause basal ganglia abnormality with progressive cerebral/cerebellar atrophy.

To date, less than 10 pedigrees have been reported with ZNF335 mutations since it was discovered in 2012 and little is known about ZNF335-related clinical spectrum. We describe a 12 years old male patient who is only child of nonconsanguineous Turkish parents. Trio whole genome sequencing identified previously unreported compound heterozygous variants in ZNF335, namely, c.3889T > A p.(Ser1297Thr) and c.758G > A p.(Arg253Gln) where transmitted by his father and mother, respectively. Patient' magnetic resonance imaging findings were overlapping to those observed in the previous cases with ZNF335

[A child with puzzling complaints--does he have a disease?].

Two children were presented to the physician with serious, long-lasting and unexplained complaints. The first was a girl aged four years with diarrhoea, vomiting and subfebrile temperature, the other was a boy aged almost 1 year with sudden spells of cyanosis and tachycardia. The mothers were found to falsify and fabricate the illness of their children: Münchausen syndrome by proxy. As a consequence of this behaviour, the children underwent extensive and sometimes invasive diagnostic investigations and treatment for their puzzling illness. A number of alarm signals associated with the conditio

The Child Attachment Interview: a psychometric study of reliability and discriminant validity.

While well-established attachment measures have been developed for infancy, early childhood, and adulthood, a "measurement gap" has been identified in middle childhood, where behavioral or representational measures are not yet sufficiently robust. This article documents the development of a new measure--the Child Attachment Interview (CAI)--which seeks to bridge this gap. The CAI is a semistructured interview, in which children are invited to describe their relationships with their primary caregivers. The coding system is informed by the Adult Attachment Interview and the Strange Situation Pro

Does recollection of exposure to poor maternal care in childhood affect later ability to relate?

The study tested Bowlby's hypothesis that experiencing the poor relating of parents in childhood predisposes the individual to poor relating in adult life. Data were drawn from two community samples: a younger sample of 25-34-year-old married women, and an older one of 40-49-year-old women. Data were also drawn from the husbands of the women in the younger sample. It focused on the single childhood variable of the recollection of poor maternal care. To avoid the effect of this on depression or other psychopathology, groups who were depressed and not depressed, or who were at different levels o

Can whole-family interventions target violence and parenting in families experiencing domestic violence and abuse? A longitudinal study of the For Baby's Sake programme.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the potential for a whole-family intervention for domestic violence and abuse (DVA) - the For Baby's Sake programme - to address both parenting and abusive behaviours in families experiencing DVA. This objective is achieved by investigating parents' perspective. This trauma-informed programme works separately with mothers and fathers and is intended to start in pregnancy and continue for two years. METHODS: Three sets of individual interviews were conducted with mothers and fathers both at the start of the programme (during pregnancy); one year after pro
