Effects of omega-3 fatty acids on CB1 cannabinoid receptor localization in the hippocampal CA1 region following alcohol withdrawal in adolescent male mice.

Adolescent binge drinking has detrimental effects on brain function, leading to long-lasting impairments in synaptic plasticity, cognition, and behavior. These effects are mediated, in part, by disruption of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and its cannabinoid type-1 (CB1) receptor. Alcohol consumption also depletes omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for maintaining cell membrane integrity and supporting brain function. This depletion impairs synaptic plasticity by disrupting endocannabinoid signaling and reducing CB1 receptor expression and function. Conversely, enhancement of the ECS c

Therapeutic trough mycophenolic acid levels positively correlate with omega-3 fatty acids in leukocytes of children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. a pilot study.

The pathogenesis of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) in most pediatric cases involves immune cell dysfunction, mediated, among other factors, by biologically active polyunsaturated fatty acids -dependent compounds in the blood and cell membranes. The immunosuppressive drug mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is commonly used to maintain remission in patients with steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of trough blood mycophenolic acid (MPA) levels on the endoleukocyte fatty acid omega-3 and omega-6 series. Eighteen pediatric subjects with INS

Long-term omega-3 fatty acids modulate immune responses more effectively than ibuprofen in Mtb-infected mice: An in silico functional analysis approach.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health threat, necessitating alternative and novel treatments to modulate inflammation and shorten drug treatment periods. The potential of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA/DHA) and ibuprofen as adjunct therapies in TB treatment was demonstrated recently in Mycobacterium TB (Mtb) C3HeB/FeJ mice, but the underlying molecular mechanisms of the immune response pathways remain largely unknown. Here, we used in silico predictive functional network modelling to predict underlying molecular relationships and functional network interac

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids protect peritoneal mesothelial cells from hyperglycolysis and mesothelial-mesenchymal transition through the FFAR4/CaMKKβ/AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway.

Peritoneal fibrosis is a severe clinical complication associated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) and impacts its efficacy and patient outcomes. The process of mesothelial-mesenchymal transition (MMT) in peritoneal mesothelial cells plays a pivotal role in fibrogenesis, whereas metabolic reprogramming, characterized by excessive glycolysis, is essential in MMT development. No reliable therapies are available despite substantial progress made in understanding the mechanisms underlying peritoneal fibrosis. Protective effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3 PUFAs) has been described in PD-

Assessing the impact of omega-3 fatty acids on ventricular tachyarrhythmia and survival in patients with ICDs: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies investigating the effects of fish oil on shocks administered by ICDs in patients with ventricular tachycardias produced inconclusive results. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in lowering the risk of life-threatening VTs among individuals with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. METHODS: We searched five databases, including Central, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus, for studies evaluating the efficacy of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for the prevention of ICD events for VT o

Interaction between citalopram and omega-3 fatty acids on anxiety and depression behaviors and maintaining the stability of brain pyramidal neurons in mice.

This research was done to examine the combination of citalopram, an antidepressant drug, and omega-3 in a mice model of depression. Mice received citalopram (1 and 2 mg/kg) or omega-3 (10 and 20 mg/kg) daily over 30 days. Then, they were exposed to acute and chronic restraint stress to assess the possible increasing effect of omega-3 on the antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of citalopram. Elevated plus-maze (EPM) and forced swimming test (FST) were used to assess anxiety and depression symptoms in non-restraint stress (NRS), acute restraint stress (ARS), and chronic restraint stress (CRS)

The effect of omega-3 fatty acids on a biomarker of head trauma in NCAA football athletes: a multi-site, non-randomized study.

BACKGROUND: American-style football (ASF) athletes are at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and exhibit elevated levels of serum neurofilament light (Nf-L), a biomarker of axonal injury that is associated with repetitive head impact exposure over the course of a season of competition. Supplementation with the w-3 fatty acid (FA) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) attenuates serum Nf-L elevations and improves aspects of CVD, such as the omega-3 index (O3I). However, the effect of combining the w-3 FA eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) with DHA on, specifically, serum Nf-L i

Potentially Important Therapeutic Interactions between Antibiotics, and a Specially Engineered Emulsion Drug Vehicle Containing Krill-Oil-Based Phospholipids and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

The incidence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide is increasing as the pipeline for the development of new chemotherapeutic entities is decreasing. Clearly, overexposure to antibiotics, including excessive dosing, is a key factor that fuels AMR. In fact, most of the new antibacterial agents under development are derivatives of existing classes of antibiotics. Novel approaches involving unique antimicrobial combinations, targets, and/or delivery systems are under intense investigation. An innovative combination of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) consisting of antimicrobial drug

Carriers of an apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 allele are more vulnerable to a dietary deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids and cognitive decline.

Carriers of an epsilon 4 allele (E4) of apolipoprotein E (APOE) develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) earlier than carriers of other APOE alleles. The metabolism of plasma docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), an omega-3 fatty acid (n-3 FA), taken up by the brain and concentrated in neurons, is disrupted in E4 carriers, resulting in lower levels of brain DHA. Behavioural and cognitive impairments have been observed in animals with lower brain DHA levels, with emphasis on loss of spatial memory and increased anxiety. E4 mice provided a diet deficient in n-3 FA had a greater depletion of n-3 FA levels

A Post-stroke Therapeutic Regimen with Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids that Promotes White Matter Integrity and Beneficial Microglial Responses after Cerebral Ischemia.

White matter injury induced by ischemic stroke elicits sensorimotor impairments, which can be further deteriorated by persistent proinflammatory responses. We previously reported that delayed and repeated treatments with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) improve spatial cognitive functions and hippocampal integrity after ischemic stroke. In the present study, we report a post-stroke n-3 PUFA therapeutic regimen that not only confers protection against neuronal loss in the gray matter but also promotes white matter integrity. Beginning 2 h after 60 min of middle cerebral artery oc

Reversal of severe parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease in an infant with short bowel syndrome using parenteral fish oil (Omega-3 fatty acids).

Total parenteral nutrition is an important adjunct in the care of neonates with surgical disorders. Cholestasis is at present the most worrisome complication of this technique; it is difficult to treat and may progress to eventual cirrhosis and liver failure. This article reviews the pertinent clinical and nutritional data in a surgical patient with short bowel syndrome who developed parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease successfully treated with fish-oil based lipids.
