A Light-Responsive Neural Circuit Suppresses Feeding.

Light plays an essential role in a variety of physiological processes, including vision, mood, and glucose homeostasis. However, the intricate relationship between light and an animal's feeding behavior has remained elusive. Here, we found that light exposure suppresses food intake, whereas darkness amplifies it in male mice. Interestingly, this phenomenon extends its reach to diurnal male Nile grass rats and healthy humans. We further show that lateral habenula (LHb) neurons in mice respond to light exposure, which in turn activates 5-HT neurons in the dorsal Raphe nucleus (DRN). Activation o…

[Reverse learning in WAG/Rij rats with depression-like behavior].

Learning and reverse learning in a complex maze, behavior in the open field test, novelty-suppressed feeding test, and forced swimming test were studies in WAG/Rij and Wistar rats. As compared with Wistar rats, WAG/Rij rats more slowly learned the spatial task, more slowly performed in the learning and reverse learning tasks, and made more errors in the complex maze (18% of WAG/Rij rats didn't reach learning criterion). Moreover, WAG/Rij rats exhibited reduced grooming reactions in the open field test, longer latency of approaching to food in the novel open field, reduced amount of food consum

Lesions of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus alter food and water consumption.

The Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW) produces several neuropeptides, including urocortin 1 and cocaine-amphetamine-regulated transcript, which regulate feeding, energy balance, and anxiety. Additionally, the EW projects to feeding and anxiety-regulatory brain areas. The authors tested the effect of lesions of the EW on the consumption of food, water and flavored solutions, metabolic indices, and exploratory behavior on the elevated plus maze in male C57BL/6J mice. EW lesion significantly reduced basal and deprivation-induced food and fluid consumption compared with sham and placement controls, bu

A work-for-food enrichment program increases exploration and decreases stereotypies in four species of bears.

Zoo-housed bears are prone to exhibiting stereotypic behaviors, generally considered indicators of negative welfare. We explored the effects of a variable-time feeding enrichment schedule on behavioral indicators of welfare in four bear species at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. We distributed the diets of eight bears in one of five enrichment items, for two consecutive days each, and monitored behavior throughout the day. In Experiment 1, we compared variable-time to fixed-time presentation of enrichment over two, 10-day periods. Overall, bears performed more exploratory behavior when enriched (p <

Regulation of body weight and food intake by AGRP neurons during opioid dependence and abstinence in mice.

Dysregulation of body weight maintenance and opioid dependence are often treated as independent disorders. Here, we assessed the effects of both acute and long-term administration of morphine with and without chemogenetic activation of agouti-related peptide (AGRP)-expressing neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARCAGRP neurons) to elucidate whether morphine and neuronal activation affect feeding behavior and body weight. First, we characterized interactions of opioids and energy deficit in wild-type mice. We observed that opioid administration attenuated both fasting-induced refeeding and ghrelin-…

Neural regulation of blood pressure by leptin and the related peptides.

Recent biological advances make it possible to discover new peptides associated with obesity. Leptin, neuropeptide Y, corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF), alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptides are known to participate in appetite and feeding behavior. Various lines of evidence suggest that these peptides participate not only in feeding behavior but also in cardiovascular and sympathetic regulations. Both leptin and ghrelin are secreted from the peripheral tissue; then they reach the brain to modulate sympathetic ac…

The Distinctive Clinical Profiles of Children With Autism Suffering From Different Subtypes of Rome IV Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are prevalent in children with autism and can interact with the neuropsychiatric symptoms bidirectionally. Moreover, FGIDs may affect feeding to jeopardize nutritional intake. Existing research often overlooks the heterogeneity of FGIDs. Understanding the clinical correlates of individual FGID subtypes may clarify the underlying gut-brain interactions to guide management. This study compared the core autistic symptoms, co-occurring psychopathologies, feeding behavior and dietary intake among 737 Chinese children with autism (mean age = 7.76 years; …

Assessment of Animal Welfare in Confined and Grazing Dairy Systems Using the Welfare Quality® Protocol.

This study compared animal welfare outcomes in grazing and confined dairy systems. Eighteen farms (nine grazing and nine confined) were evaluated using 30 animal- and resource-based measures aggregated into 12 criteria and four welfare principles (0-100 scale): Good Feeding, Good Housing, Good Health, and Appropriate Behavior. No significant differences were detected for Good Feeding (75 vs. 76) or Good Health (32 vs. 34). Appropriate Behavior scores were lower in confined systems (16) than in grazing systems (34). For Good Housing, confidence intervals suggested higher scores in grazing syste

However, many studies do not consider the be … eatments and institutions, observed oral stereotypies tended to correlate negatively with increased feeding behavior. Apart from a short-term effect of enrichment, this study indicates relevant differences in the frequencies of behaviors observed during the day and night, suggesting that assessing nocturnal behavior specifically may be important in many species.

Time matters: BMAL1 and cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health.

Modern lifestyles increasingly promote unhealthy eating behaviors, contributing to the global rise in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic diseases (CKMD). Circadian rhythms, anticipatory responses that coordinate biological processes with the 24-h rotation of the earth, are tightly linked to feeding behavior and nutrient metabolism, which are crucial for cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic homeostasis. At the molecular level, core circadian "clock genes" take part in a highly-conserved, regulatory feedback loop that optimizes metabolic processes for the anticipated time of food intake. Among the molec…

Benzodiazepine Delorazepam Induces Locomotory Hyperactivity and Alterations in Pedal Mucus Texture in the Freshwater Gastropod Planorbarius corneus.

Benzodiazepines, psychotropic drugs, are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment due to over-consumption and inefficient removal by sewage treatment plants. Bioaccumulation with consequent behavioral and physiological effects has been reported in many aquatic species. However, the responses are species-specific and still poorly understood. To improve the knowledge, we exposed the freshwater snail Planorbarius corneus to 1, 5, or 10 µg/L of delorazepam, the most widely consumed benzodiazepine in Italy. Conventional behavioral tests were used to assess the effects on locomotor and feeding behavior…

Magnetic magic: How stimulation alters feeding patterns in Aplysia californica.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is emerging as a groundbreaking treatment for eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa, though its underlying neurological mechanisms remain elusive. To shed light on the effects of rTMS on neural control of feeding behavior, we investigated the feeding responses in the marine mollusk Aplysia californica. Using in vitro preparations, we elicited feeding responses and performed dual nerve recordings to identify motor programs associated with rejection and ingestion. We applied rTMS to the cerebral ganglion, the neural center resp…

Comparative transcriptomic analysis of salivary glands between the zoophytophagous Cyrtorhinus lividipennis and the phytozoophagous Apolygus lucorum.

BACKGROUND: Saliva plays a crucial role in shaping the feeding behavior of insects, involving processes such as food digestion and the regulation of interactions between insects and their hosts. Cyrtorhinus lividipennis serves as a predominant natural enemy of rice pests, while Apolygus lucorum, exhibiting phytozoophagous feeding behavior, is a destructive agricultural pest. In this study, a comparative transcriptome analysis, incorporating the published genomes of C.lividipennis and A.lucorum, was conducted to reveal the role of salivary secretion in host adaptation. RESULTS: In contrast to …

Behavioral Challenges and Adaptive Strategies in Providing Mealtime Care to Residents With Dementia: A Qualitative Study of Nursing Home Clinical and Administrative Staff.

This study examined how nursing home staff adapt to challenging mealtime behaviors in residents with dementia, such as turning away or refusing food. Ten focus groups were conducted with 52 clinical and administrative staff from three southeastern U.S. nursing homes. Transcripts were analyzed using four key codes: feeding behaviors, interventions, training, and communication. Staff described a range of mealtime challenges, including cognitive and functional decline, dysphagia, and elopement. Feeding-related behaviors like refusing to eat reflect the complexity of care required. Staff reported …

Effects of providing water from a bucket or a nipple on the performance and behavior of calves fed ad libitum volumes of acidified milk replacer.

Little information is available on how much water ad libitum milk-fed calves consume during the milk-feeding stage and during weaning to solid feed. Further, no information exists on the effects on calf behavior and performance of different water delivery systems during these stages. Therefore, the objectives of this study were first, to examine the water intake of calves fed acidified milk replacer ad libitum during the milk-feeding and weaning stages, and second, to determine whether the method of water delivery affected water and feed intake and growth during these periods or oral behavior

Relationships between paddock-level pasture mass and cow data derived from GPS and behavior-monitoring on-animal sensors in rotationally grazed dairy systems.

Data from behavior-monitoring and location (global positioning system) devices fitted to dairy cows may improve our understanding of how animal behavior and movement are associated with feed availability and quality. We hypothesized that data from behavior-monitoring and location sensors may be associated with feed availability in a paddock within a rotationally grazed dairy system. To investigate this, 100 cows were randomly assigned to one of 4 groups (n = 25 cows per group) and allocated to different target pasture allocations to meet either 80%, 100%, or 120% of their estimated ME requirem
