Pseudomonas brassicacearum-Induced Biotite Weathering: Role of Iron Homeostasis and Two Siderophores.

Soil bacteria play a crucial role in enhancing mineral weathering, thereby facilitating the release of mineral structural ions into the environment. Pseudomonas brassicacearum NFM421, a root-isolated bacterium, produces two different siderophores in the form of pyoverdine and ornicorrugatin. We studied the interaction between this bacterium and biotite─a natural iron-bearing phyllosilicate─to assess the factors governing siderophore-mediated biogenic weathering. We demonstrated that bacterial Fe is an essential factor driving biotite weathering. Our findings suggested that the lipopeptidic sid

Mixotrophic partial denitrification based on ferrous iron and sodium acetate: performance, microbial community, and potential mechanisms.

Partial denitrification (PD) was configured as a nitrite supplier for anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX). The mixotrophic PD (MPD) system using ferrous iron and sodium acetate as co-electron donors was operated at autotrophic-to-heterotrophic (A/H) ratios of 0.07 (Phase I), 0.21 (Phase II), and 0.85 (Phase III). Stable nitrite accumulation rates (NAR) of 78.0 %, 70.8 %, and 59.6 % were achieved in Phases I-III, respectively, while the autotrophic contribution increased from 21.8 % to 76.1 % with increasing A/H. Thauera, Longilinea and Thermomonas were the predominant denitrifiers, whereas

Slow-release ferrous effects on synchronous stabilization of lead, cadmium, and arsenic in soil.

Zero-valent iron (ZVI)-based materials is considered promising for the synchronous stabilization of soils contaminated with multi-heavy metals (e.g., Pb(II), Cd(II), and As(V)), particularly due to its continuous slow-release ferrous. However, little is known about the effect of slow-released Fe(II) on the stabilization of Pb, Cd, and As in the contaminated soil. In this study, ZVI(Fe0) and ball-milled ZVI(B-Fe0), with different ability of slow-releasing Fe(II), were used to investigate the effect of slow-released Fe(II) on the simultaneous stabilization of Pb, Cd, and As in soil. The B-Fe0, w

Thrombocytopenia following iron repletion with ferrous gluconate.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder marked by low platelet counts that puts patients at risk for spontaneous bleeding. A rare trigger for ITP is iron repletion, which has only been reported in a few cases. In this article, we present a unique case of a 54-year-old male with a history of recurrent ITP who experienced rapid thrombocytopenia following iron repletion with ferrous gluconate. Discontinuation of ferrous medications resulted in platelet counts returning to the normal baseline. Following more than 30 years of the patient's clinical timeline, this case demonstrates t

Structural changes and in vitro bioaccessibility of CPP-febisgly complexes: Dependence on iron load.

The effect of casein phosphopeptides (CPP) and ferrous bisglycinate (FebisGly) at different ratios (1:20, 1:10, and 1:5 w/w) on iron supplementation was investigated. The in vitro bioaccessibility, structural changes, antioxidant activity, and the effect of absorption inhibitors were also explored. The results demonstrated that CPP enhanced the bioaccessibility of FebisGly by 68.72 % ± 0.18 % and increased the β-sheet content from 21.60 % ± 0.23 % to 67.92 % ± 0.12 %, forming a stable secondary structure. The particle size distribution (PSD) and rheological analyses indicated that CPP signific

Clusters of solvated ferrous ion in water-ammonia mixture: Structures and noncovalent interactions.

The behavior of metal ions is commonly studied in pure solvent although, in our daily life, these metals are involved in mixtures of solvents. In the present study, we investigated structures, relative stabilities and temperature dependance of solvated ferrous ion in water-ammonia mixture solvent at 0K and at various temperatures ranging from 25K to 400K. All the calculations are performed at the MN15 level of theory associated with the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set. For deep understanding of binding patterns in solvated ferrous ion in water-ammonia mixture solvent, noncovalent interactions are presen

Dissolved organic matter promoted hydroxyl radical formation and phenanthrene attenuation during oxygenation of iron-pillared montmorillonites.

The oxygenation of Fe(II)-bearing minerals for hydroxyl radicals (HO•) formation and contaminant attenuation receives increasing attentions. However, information on dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different types, concentrations, and molecular weights (MWs) in manipulating HO• formation and contaminant attenuation during mineral oxygenation remain unclear. In this study, four iron-pillared montmorillonites (IPMs) and two DOM samples [e.g., humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA)] were prepared to explore the HO• formation and phenanthrene attenuation during the oxygenation of IPMs in the pr

Impacts of mixed ferrous sulfate-biochar additives on humification and bacterial community during electric field-assisted aerobic composting.

This study assessed the impact of nine mixed ferrous sulfates and biochars on electric field-assisted aerobic composting (EAC), focusing on the spectroscopy of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbial communities. Adding 1.05% ferrous sulfate and 5.25% biochar to EAC increased the specific ultraviolet absorbances at 254 and 280 nm by 142.3% and 133.9% on day 35, respectively. This ratio accelerated the early response of carboxyl groups (-COOH) and lignin (CꘌC), enhancing the relative abundance of Thermobifida (4.0%) and Thermopolyspora (4.3%). The condition contributed to humus precursor f

Effects of engineering injection and supplement mode of in-situ biogeochemical transformation enhancement EVO-FeSO4 on the remediation of tetrachloroethylene contaminated aquifer.

Traditional in situ biogeochemical transformation suffers from competition among crucial microorganisms and inadequate formation of reactive minerals, thus leading to the accumulation of toxic intermediates. In this study, three regulation schemes were proposed to solve these problems from the perspective of engineering mode. Results showed intermittent injection mode effectively reduced the accumulation of toxic intermediates but the reduction rate of tetrachloroethylene was decreased. And periodical supplementation of carbon and sulfur sources accelerated the removal of tetrachloroethylene b

Was hydrogen peroxide present before the arrival of oxygenic photosynthesis? The important role of iron(II) in the Archean ocean.

We address the chemical/biological history of H2O2 back at the times of the Archean eon (2.5-3.9 billion years ago (Gya)). During the Archean eon the pO2 was million-fold lower than the present pO2, starting to increase gradually from 2.3 until 0.6 Gya, when it reached ca. 0.2 bar. The observation that some anaerobic organisms can defend themselves against O2 has led to the view that early organisms could do the same before oxygenic photosynthesis had developed at about 3 Gya. This would require the anaerobic generation of H2O2, and here we examine the various mechanisms which were suggested i

High-rate iron sulfide and sulfur-coupled autotrophic denitrification system: Nutrients removal performance and microbial characterization.

Iron sulfides-based autotrophic denitrification (IAD) is a promising technology for nitrate and phosphate removal from low C:N ratio wastewater due to its cost-effectiveness and low sludge production. However, the slow kinetics of IAD, compared to other sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD) processes, limits its engineering application. This study constructed a co-electron-donor (FeS and S0 with a volume ratio of 2:1) iron sulfur autotrophic denitrification (ISAD) biofilter and operated at as short as 1 hr hydraulic retention time (HRT). Long-term operation results showed that the sup

Effective Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization in chromite ore processing residue (COPR) contaminated soils by ferrous sulfate and digestate: A comparative investigation with typical reducing agents.

Chemical reduction combined with microbial stabilization is a green and efficient method for the remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contaminated soil. In this study, the combination of ferrous sulfate with kitchen waste digestate was applied to reduce and immobilize Cr(VI) in chromite ore processing residue (COPR) contaminated soils, and systematically evaluated the remediation performance of Cr(VI) compared with several typical reducing agents (i.e., ferrous sulfate, zero valent iron, sodium thiosulfate, ferrous sulfide, and calcium polysulfide). The results showed that the combinati

Oxygenases as Powerful Weapons in the Microbial Degradation of Pesticides.

Oxygenases, which catalyze the reductive activation of O2 and incorporation of oxygen atoms into substrates, are widely distributed in aerobes. They function by switching the redox states of essential cofactors that include flavin, heme iron, Rieske non-heme iron, and Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate. This review summarizes the catalytic features of flavin-dependent monooxygenases, heme iron-dependent cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, Rieske non-heme iron-dependent oxygenases, Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases, and ring-cleavage dioxygenases, which are commonly involved in pesticide degradatio

Accumulation of Intracellular Ferrous Iron in Inflammatory-Activated Macrophages.

Macrophages are important innate immune cells which can be polarized into heterogeneous populations. The inflammatory-activated M1 cells are known to be involved in all kinds of inflammatory diseases, which were also found to be associated with dysregulation of iron metabolism. While iron overload is known to induce M1 polarization, the valence states of iron and its intracellular dynamics during macrophage inflammatory activation have not been identified. In this study, THP-1-derived macrophages were polarized into M1, M2a, M2b, M2c, and M2d cells, and intracellular ferrous iron (Fe(II)) was

Model-based investigation of the chemical phosphorus removal potential of the peroxide regenerated iron-sulfide control technology.

In this study, the potential of using peroxide regenerated iron-sulfide control (PRI-SC®) for chemical phosphorus removal utilizing the existing iron sulfide found in wastewaters was investigated in batch tests and compared in full-scale facility-wide simulations to using iron salts. PRI-SC is a combination treatment that utilizes iron salts and hydrogen peroxide in a synergetic fashion, where hydrogen peroxide is used in regenerating the spent iron salt in situ in the form of iron sulfide, yielding ferric iron and colloidal sulfur. A simplified kinetic model was developed, calibrated, and int

Use of sponge iron as an indirect electron donor to provide ferrous iron for nitrate-dependent ferrous oxidation processes: Denitrification performance and mechanism.

Sponge iron (SI) can serve as an indirect electron donor to provide Fe(II) for the nitrate-dependent ferrous oxidation (NDFO) process, producing OH- and magnetite. The SI-NDFO system mainly uses Fe(OH)2 as an electron donor, achieving a TN reduction rate of 0.42 mg-TN/(gVSS·h) for a period of at least 90 days. The enrichment of iron-oxidizing bacteria and the competition of iron-carbon micro-electrolysis for reaction sites on the surface of SI are the main reasons for the improvement of total nitrogen removal efficiency (TNRE). With an influent NO3--N concentration of 50 mg/L and a SI concentr

Effect of ferrous sulfate modified sludge biochar on the mobility, speciation, fractionation and bioaccumulation of vanadium in contaminated soil from a mining area.

In contaminated soil, pristine biochar has poor applicability for immobilizing vanadium (V), which mainly exists as oxyanions in soil. To elucidate the immobilization potential and biotic/abiotic stabilizing mechanisms of a ferrous sulfate (FS)-modified sludge biochar in a V-contaminated soil from a mining area, we investigated the effects of biochar addition on the soil characteristics, growth of alfalfa, leachability, bioavailability, speciation, and fractionation of V, and changes in the microbial community structure and metabolic response. The results showed that the water extractable, aci

A new insight into Cd reduction by flooding in paddy soil: The different dominant roles of Fe and S on Cd immobilization under fluctuant pe + pH conditions.

The unsteady comprehensive system of pe + pH strongly affects the fate of Cd in paddy soils. However, the specific pe + pH threshold determining Cd bioavailability is largely unknown especially considering the roles of Fe and S reduction. The experiment set different water managements to obtain paddy soil samples with unstable pe + pH, and chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization were applied to reveal the dynamic process and mechanism about how Fe and S controlled Cd mobilization. The results showed that low pe + pH was favorable t

Incorporating a Ferrous Polymer Target into Elastomeric Liners for Socket Fit Sensing in Prosthesis Users.

Liner-to-socket distance measurement using inductive sensing may be an effective means to continuously monitor socket fit in people using trans-tibial prostheses. A practical limitation, however, is a means to incorporate a thin uniform-thickness layer of conductive or magnetically permeable target material into the wide range of prosthetic liner products that people with limb amputation commonly use. In this paper, a method is presented whereby a 0.50-mm thickness ferrous polymer made from a SEEPS polymer and iron powder that is formed adjacent to a 0.25-mm thick non-ferrous layer of SEEPS po
