When a drip becomes a flood: Lessons learned from Target Corporation's first large-scale business disruption.

Business continuity practitioners routinely determine which teams in their companies are critical and undertake extensive and rigorous planning processes. But what happens when a business is faced with an unanticipated long-term disruption that primarily affects non-critical teams? How can a company use the essential principles of business continuity and crisis management in order to respond? This paper explores a 2013 business disruption experienced by Target Corporation at one of its headquarters locations caused by a leak in the water line for an ice machine. Challenges encountered and revi

Leptospirosis outbreak following severe flooding: a rapid assessment and mass prophylaxis campaign; Guyana, January-February 2005.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis usually transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated with urine from infected animals. Severe flooding can put individuals at greater risk for contracting leptospirosis in endemic areas. Rapid testing for the disease and large-scale interventions are necessary to identify and control infection. We describe a leptospirosis outbreak following severe flooding and a mass chemoprophylaxis campaign in Guyana. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: From January-March 2005, we collected data on suspected leptospirosis hospitalizations and deaths. Labora

Distinct mechanisms for aerenchyma formation in leaf sheaths of rice genotypes displaying a quiescence or escape strategy for flooding tolerance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Rice is one of the few crops able to withstand periods of partial or even complete submergence. One of the adaptive traits of rice is the constitutive presence and further development of aerenchyma which enables oxygen to be transported to submerged organs. The development of lysigenous aerenchyma is promoted by ethylene accumulating within the submerged plant tissues, although other signalling mechanisms may also co-exist. In this study, aerenchyma development was analysed in two rice (Oryza sativa) varieties, 'FR13A' and 'Arborio Precoce', which show opposite traits in f

Coverage survey and lessons learned from a pre-emptive cholera vaccination campaign in urban and rural communities affected by landslides and floods in Freetown Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: On 14 August 2017, massive landslides and floods hit Freetown (Sierra Leone). More than 1,000 people lost their lives while approximately 6,000 people were displaced. The areas most affected included parts of the town with challenged access to basic water and sanitation facilities, with communal water sources likely contaminated by the disaster. To avert a possible cholera outbreak following this emergency, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS), supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners, including Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and UNICEF, l…

Reed-straw configuration density in Suaeda salsa restoration: Context-dependent biological responses under controlled flooding.

Locally sourced reed straw may provide a biodegradable, near-natural aid for re-establishing Suaeda salsa on hydrologically variable salt-marsh surfaces. We screened no mulch and 1-, 2-, and 3-cm anchored, cross-woven configurations across three flooding depths and three daily inundation durations. The split-plot experiment comprised 36 independently operated tanks and 144 separate pots. The implemented configurations differed in standing seedling proportion, plant height, root biomass, and total biomass, and several configuration contrasts changed with hydrological treatment. A quasi-binomial

Oil Recovery by Synergistic CO2 Flooding Using Viscoelastic Fluids of Low Interfacial Tension Containing Amphiphilic Nanoparticles.

Tight-oil reservoirs are abundant but characterized by poor physical properties and strong heterogeneity. CO2 flooding is an important technique for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon storage, yet CO2 channeling remains a critical issue due to its high mobility, and existing anti-channeling methods have limitations. In this work, a low-interfacial-tension viscoelastic fluid containing amphiphilic nanoparticles (LFNA) was formulated by combining a small-molecule viscosifier (LFLM) with amphiphilic nanoparticles (LQNA). Its performance and synergistic effect with CO2 flooding were systematic

Optimizing multidimensional land use for flood regulation supply-demand matching: Evidence from a GWRF-SHAP model.

Enhancing Flood Regulation Ecosystem Services (FRES) offers an effective way to reduce urban flood risks. Land use influences both FRES supply and flood risk, thereby altering their supply-demand balance. However, current studies are mostly descriptive, and the few mechanism studies confined to either function or form provide only a partial view of land use impacts, obscuring complex nonlinear and spatially heterogeneous mechanisms and thus limiting targeted environmental management. To address this gap, this study constructs a framework integrating multidimensional "function-form-pattern-inte

YOLO-based real-time floating debris counting in urban rivers for flood monitoring and water resource management.

Urban flooding is increasingly exacerbated by the accumulation of floating debris in rivers, which obstructs water flow, degrades water quality, and poses significant risks to human safety and environmental sustainability. Effective monitoring of floating debris is therefore critical for early flood warning and long-term water resource management. This study presents a real-time monitoring framework that integrates deep learning-based object detection models, You Only Look Once (YOLO) with video surveillance for the identification and quantification of floating debris in urban rivers. Exploring the effects of riverine flooding on traffic demand forecasting using activity-based modeling in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand.

Riverine floods are a recurring and increasingly severe problem in Southeast Asia, often resulting in the submersion of large urban areas for extended periods. As a result, urban mobility is severely disrupted, significantly affecting the daily activities of residents. Integrating behavioral changes during floods into travel demand forecasting is essential for assessing flood adaptation measures in the transportation sector. However, no detailed analysis has been conducted on the impacts of urban flooding on daily activities and travel behavior, and no examples are available on how to incorpor…

Adapted two-phase capacitance-resistance modeling of polymer flooding in synthetic and benchmark reservoirs with varying degree of heterogeneity.

Polymer flooding is a widely applied enhanced oil recovery method that improves sweep efficiency by increasing injected water viscosity and achieving a more favorable mobility ratio. Field-scale performance evaluation remains challenging when detailed reservoir data are unavailable, motivating the use of data-driven approaches such as Capacitance-Resistance Model (CRM). However, conventional single-phase CRM formulations neglect two-phase flow effects, limiting their applicability to polymer flooding. This study presents a two-phase CRM that explicitly incorporates polymer-induced viscosity va

Research on inter-well connectivity in CO2 flooding based on long short-term memory graph attention network.

Inter-well connectivity is a key parameter for evaluating the effectiveness of the CO2 flooding development and optimizing injection-production strategies. However, existing research methods face challenges in dynamic modeling, real-time prediction, and adaptability to complex reservoirs. To address these issues, this study proposes a method based on the Long Short-Term Memory-Graph Attention Network (LSTM-GAT) to quantitatively analyze inter-well connectivity and predict future well production. First, a geological model is constructed, and numerical simulations are conducted to obtain dynamic

Adiabatic shearing and performances of milling 304 stainless steel based on cooling strategies of flood, LN2 and LN2+LCO2.

During high-speed milling, stainless steel is prone to generating adiabatic shear bands in the cutting zone, which affects the cutting quality. The main factors causing adiabatic shear are high temperature and elastoplastic instability. An energy dissipation model for stainless steel milling was established and analyzed based on adiabatic shear. A series of flood and cryogenic cooling milling experiments with liquid nitrogen (LN2) and LN2+liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) cooling were carried out. Simultaneously, an innovative research about the effect of LN2+LCO2 on adiabatic shear was executed. T

A dynamic model integrating ensemble particle filtering and gradient boosting decision tree algorithms for urban flood forecasting.

Accurate and timely flood forecasting is essential for issuing effective early warnings and reducing casualties as well as economic losses. However, urban flood forecasting models often struggle to balance computational efficiency with nonlinear representation capability. Forecast errors are rapidly amplified during highly dynamic flooding processes. Assimilating observational data into the model can correct forecast trajectories and reduce overall uncertainties. Existing mainstream data assimilation techniques, such as the ensemble Kalman filter and particle filter, can hardly balance the req

Zoonotic transmission risk in flood-prone river basins: community knowledge and behavioral determinants of leptospirosis in eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease with a rising incidence in flood-prone tropical regions. In the Shabelle River Basin of eastern Ethiopia, recurrent flooding combined with close human-animal contact creates conditions conducive to transmission. However, community knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to leptospirosis remain poorly characterized, limiting effective prevention efforts. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in flood-affected districts of Mustahil and Fer Fer in eastern Ethiopia. Adult household heads or primary caregivers w

Fine-scale human-flood relationships in the Congo Basin: ethnographic perspectives from the Lac Télé Community Reserve.

The Likouala-aux-Herbes river and surrounding swamp forests of the northern Republic of Congo are described in scientific literature as a wetland forest system characterized by a bimodal flood pulse and widespread seasonal flooding. Recent climatic and hydrological modelling of the Congo Basin and Cuvette Centrale peatlands, moreover, positions the Likouala region as a rain-fed or ombrotrophic peatland. However, human populations experience and adapt to flooding at a more localized scale. This study presents ethnographic data on flooding and seasonality from six villages within the Lac Télé Co
