[18F]-fluoride positron emission tomography for imaging condylar hyperplasia.

The management of condylar hyperplasia depends on the diagnosis of continued growth in the affected condyle, and there is currently no satisfactory way of imaging it. [(18)F]-fluoride positron emission tomography (PET) was included in the investigation of 5 patients who were suspected of having condylar hyperplasia, and the results were correlated with the operative findings. The technique correctly identified condylar hyperplasia in all patients. Our results suggest that [(18)F]-fluoride PET is a valid way of assessing patients with condylar hyperplasia.

Effect of fluoride intoxication on the levels of intestinal antioxidants studied in rats.

High concentration of fluorine is noxious to the health of humans and animals. Analysis of fluoride in water samples meant for human consumption in the Vellore District of Tamil Nadu, India, revealed its presence above the permissible limit (4.56 ppm). The present study was aimed to investigate the toxic effects of oral administration of the water sample that contains the highest fluoride content on the status of pathophysiological parameters and lipid peroxidation in experimental rats. A positive control group orally treated with 4.5 ppm of fluoride was also included in the study. The assay o

A method for producing controlled fluoride release from an orthodontic bracket.

The aim of this study was to manufacture and test, in vitro, a novel modification to provide fluoride-releasing orthodontic brackets. Thirty-two orthodontic brackets were drilled to produce a recess (approximately 1.3 mm in diameter and 0.7 mm in depth) at the centre of the bracket base. Four materials, with and without the addition of sodium fluoride, a glass ionomer cement (Ketac Cem micro), a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC; GC Fuji Ortho LC), a zinc phosphate (Zinc Cement Improved), and a resin (Transbond XT) were used to fill the recess in the bracket base. Fluoride release was

Dental caries and fluorosis in low- and high-fluoride areas in Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the caries prevalence of children living in either low- or high-fluoride areas and to relate caries experience to the severity of dental fluorosis. METHOD AND MATERIALS: A total of 278 12- to 14-year-old schoolchildren, 149 in a low-fluoride area (LFA) and 129 in a high-fluoride area (HFA), were included in the study. The naturally occurring fluoride concentrations in the drinking water were 0.30 to 0.40 ppm in the LFA, 1.42 to 1.54 ppm in the HFA1, and 1.55 to 1.66 ppm in the HFA2. Dental caries was recorded with the World Health Organizati

Fluoride content in bones of Adelie penguins and environmental media in Antarctica.

Fluoride (F) distribution and its effects (fluorosis) were investigated in Antarctica. Droppings (L) excreta selected of aquatic birds, lake water, soil and moss (Polytrichum alpinum) showed a high F concentration. Although bones of Adelie penguin (Pygiscelis adeliae) and skua (Catharacta maccormicki) showed exceptionally very high F concentration in the range of 832 to 7187 mg kg(-1), their radiographs did not show any evidence of skeletal fluorosis. The possible reason and geochemical aspects of F in Antarctica region are discussed.

Effects of combined application of antimicrobial and fluoride varnishes in orthodontic patients.

A randomized prospective clinical study, with 220 patients scheduled for fixed orthodontic therapy, was conducted to test the hypothesis that application of an antimicrobial varnish in combination with a fluoride varnish (group 1) is significantly more efficient in reducing white spot lesions on the labial surfaces than application of the fluoride varnish alone (group 2). The effects of the antimicrobial varnish on the occurrence of gingivitis and plaque formation were also studied. A third aim was to investigate whether white spot lesion development could be predicted early during treatment.

Vitamin C ameliorates fluoride-induced embryotoxicity in pregnant rats.

Oral administration of sodium fluoride (40 mg/kg body weight) from day 6 to 19 of gestation caused, as compared to control, significant reductions in body weight, feed consumption, absolute uterine weight and number of implantations. Significantly higher incidence of skeletal (wavy ribs, 14th rib, <6 sternal centre, dumbell-shaped second and fifth sternebrae, incomplete ossification of skull and thickening of tibia) and visceral (subcutaneous haemorrhage) abnormalities were also observed in NaF-treated dams than that of control. [Research on inhibition of sodium fluoride on five subgingival bacteria in vitro].

This in vitro study was aimed at observing inhibition action of fluoride on 5 common periodontal bacteria in subgingival microflora. The liquid media two-fold dilution method was used to determine the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of sodium fluoride (NaF) to 9 strains of bacteria representing the main periodontopathic species(P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. intermedius) and the periodontal beneficial species (S. sanguis) and 1 strain of S. sorbrinus. The results showed that all the bacteria were inhibited at different concentration of NaF. The MIC values ranged from 128 mi

[Fragility of scientifically acquired data. The example of fluoride salts in osteoporosis].

Although there is a pathophysiological rationale for the use of sodium fluoride for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and a long history of clinical trials, there is no evidence today of its clinical efficacy. The use of sodium fluoride was a long-standing practice for many years which became official policy when strong scientific arguments suggested its efficacy. The lack of methodologically solid evidence however raised some doubts, echoed by the regulatory authorities, and led to a re-evaluation. The unacceptable risk/benefit ratio demonstrated by the new results was a major scie

Effect of amine and stannous fluoride on human neutrophil functions in vitro.

Amine fluoride (AmF)- and stannous fluoride (SnF2)-containing products were found to have a therapeutic effect on gingivitis and periodontitis. This effect was suggested to correlate with the antibacterial activity of the fluoride compounds. However, their effect on inflammatory cell function can also play a role in the therapeutic effect on gingival inflammation. The present study was designed to test the effects of AmF, SnF2, and an AmF/SnF2 combination on the function of human peripheral blood neutrophils, as compared with effects of chlorhexidine and salicylic acid. Neutrophils were isolat

Fluoridated drinking water and maturation of permanent teeth at age 12.

Dental age was evaluated in 88 children aged 12 years + 6 months in both areas of Boston with fluoridated drinking water and nonfluoridated areas surrounding Athens, Greece. Fluoridation of drinking water in the Boston areas was 1.0 ppm, a level considered 'optimal' in the USA. Girls from the fluoridated Boston area were shown in this study to have a significantly (p<0.05) delayed dental age when compared to their chronological age according to the tables of Nolla. Boys from the Boston area and boys and girls from the Athens area showed no significant difference when comparing dental age to ch…

[Clinical and hygienic evaluation of the combined effect of vibration and fluoride in humans].

Hygienic evaluation of work conditions and clinical examination of workers in fluoride mines proved vibration disease to be the prevalent occupational entity in those employees. Caused by joint effects of vibration and fluor, the clinical signs in this context demonstrate short development, occupational disablement and possible connection with fluorosis. Joint effects of vibration and calcium fluoride vs. influence of the isolated hazards show more compromised functions and changes of fluor kinetics in the body.

A new fluoride preparation for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis: calcium monofluorophosphate.

Fifty-six postmenopausal women aged 52.4 +/- 6.7 years (SD) were treated for 12 months with L-glutamine calcium monofluorophosphate. Each patient received four tablets/day, providing a total dose of 20 mg of fluoride and 600 mg of elemental calcium. Bone mineral density was measured at baseline and after 6 and 12 months of treatment by dual photon absorptiometry of the distal forearm. At these times, serum levels of alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin, and urinary concentrations of hydroxyproline and calcium, were also assayed. Results were compared with a control group of 50 untreated postme

Deposition of fluoride on tooth surfaces by a two-solution mouthrinse in vitro.

A constant-composition fluoride (F) titration method was used to measure the amount of leachable F deposited on tooth surfaces in vitro by a 1-min rinse with a 228-ppm F solution (12 mmol/l sodium fluoride). The mean F uptake was 0.23 +/- (SE) 0.07 microgram/cm2, corresponding to less than 0.2% of the F contained in the rinse. The present study describes a new F rinse system that consisted of two solutions. Solution A contained a soluble calcium salt and a buffer. Solution B contained sodium fluorosilicate, a complex fluoride salt. When solutions A and B were combined, the free F ions produced

Diacylglycerol generation in fluoride-treated neutrophils: involvement of phospholipase D.

Neutrophils exposed to fluoride ion (F-) respond with a delayed and sustained burst of superoxide anion release that is both preceded by and dependent on the influx of Ca2+ from the extracellular medium. The results of this study demonstrate a similarly delayed and sustained generation of 1,2-diglyceride in F(-)-treated neutrophils, over 90% of which was 1,2-diacylglycerol. Diacylglycerol generation was not dependent on the presence of extracellular Ca2+. Conversely, in contrast to results obtained with other agonists, removal of extracellular Ca2+ markedly potentiated synthesis of diacylglyce

Clinical evidence of the role of pre-eruptive fluoride in caries prevention.

Recent clinical and laboratory evidence has suggested that systemic fluoride plays a more minor role in caries inhibition than was previously believed. This paper reviews clinical data on water fluoridation, the topical administration of fluorides, and fluoride supplements in the light of more recent understanding of the disease dental caries. Due to reduced functional usage, erupting teeth tend to accumulate plaque which has cariogenic potential. For this reason, the period from tooth emergence to the establishment of interproximal contact and full occlusion is the most critical for caries in…

Treatment of vertebral osteoporosis with disodium monofluorophosphate: comparison with sodium fluoride.

Eighty one women with vertebral osteoporosis were treated for up to 2 years with fluoride administered either as monofluorophosphate (MFP, 200 mg/day, i.e., 26.4 mg fluoride-ion) or sodium fluoride (NaF, 50 mg/day, i.e., 22.6 mg fluoride-ion). All patients received calcium supplementation (1 g of Ca2+/day) taken apart from NaF and in the same tablet for MFP. Despite almost similar fluoride dosage of both regimens, the early increase in the bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine was higher with MFP than with NaF, reaching 11% and 4%, respectively, at 1 year (p = 0.007), and 21% and 6%,
