Fractalkine expression in the rhesus monkey brain during lentivirus infection and its control by 6-chloro-2',3'-dideoxyguanosine.

Existing data concerning the role of the delta-chemokine fractalkine (CX3CL1) and its receptor (CX3CR1) in lentivirus-induced encephalitis are limited and controversial. We explored, by quantitative in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, the cell-specific changes of CX3CL1 and CX3CR1 in rhesus macaque brain during simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection and antiretroviral treatment. Neuronal expression of CX3CL1 was significantly reduced in cortex and striatum of AIDS-diseased monkeys as compared with uninfected and asymptomatic SIV-infected monkeys. CX3CL1 mRNA was increased in

Complications of correction for focal kyphosis after posterior osteotomy and the corresponding management.

STUDY DESIGN: A clinical retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the complications and relevant management of the correction procedure for focal kyphosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The treatment of focal kyphosis is a difficult problem in spine surgery. The potential complications of surgery should be considered cautiously and managed positively. METHODS: Eighty-one patients with focal kyphosis were treated by posterior osteotomy and correction. The etiology was posttraumatic in 31 cases, healed tuberculosis in 31 cases, congenital in 17 cases, and iatrogenic in 2 cases. The surgical p

Infections of the nervous system.

Glycemic control is an important aspect of patient care in the surgical Infections of the nervous system are among the most difficult infections in terms of the morbidity and mortality posed to patients, and thereby require urgent and accurate diagnosis. Although viral meningitides are more common, it is the bacterial meningitides that have the potential to cause a rapidly deteriorating condition that the physician should be familiar with. Viral encephalitis frequently accompanies viral meningitis, and can produce focal neurologic findings and cognitive difficulties that can mimic other neurol

Clinical Neurophysiology of Zika Virus Encephalitis.

Zika virus (ZIKV) has been shown to be highly neurotropic; neurologic disorders are a common complication of this infection. Encephalitis-an inflammation of the brain parenchyma associated with neurologic dysfunction-is a rare complication of ZIKV infections. It affects patients from young to elderly ages. Clinical presentation of ZIKV encephalitis may be heterogeneous, including altered mental status (decreased or altered level of consciousness, lethargy, or personality change), seizures, and focal deficits. Complementary diagnostic investigation should include neuroimaging, lumbar puncture,

HIV Infection Is Associated With Progression of Subclinical Carotid Atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) live longer as a result of effective treatment, but long-term consequences of infection, treatment, and immunological dysfunction are poorly understood. METHODS: We prospectively examined 1011 women (74% HIV-infected) in the Women's Interagency HIV Study and 811 men (65% HIV-infected) in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study who underwent repeated B-mode carotid artery ultrasound imaging in 2004-2013. Outcomes included changes in right common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) and new focal carotid artery plaque

[The value of serologic inflammatory parameters in the diagnosis of alopecia areata].

Even recently, focal processes or inflammatory diseases have repeatedly been discussed as the possible causes of alopecia areata (AA) and corresponding diagnostic measures are still recommended. Therefore, we initially attempted to find definite indications of processes like these in AA patients by means of serologic parameters of inflammation and ESR as well as supplementary clinical focal diagnostics. The data obtained revealed increased titers of antistreptolysin in 2.9% and antistreptococcal DNase B in 25.7%, positive C-reactive protein in 8.6%, positive rheumatoid factor in 4.3%, and elev

Pathogen hijacks focal adhesion signaling by a T3SS effector CteX.

Infections by Gram-negative pathogens like Salmonella and Shigella rely on type III secretion system (T3SS) effectors. While the opportunistic pathogen Chromobacterium violaceum encodes a crucial T3SS (Cpi-1/-1a), its full effector repertoire remains undefined. Here, we performed a comprehensive proteomic analysis of the C.v. Cpi-1/-1a T3SS secretome. Our analysis not only confirmed known effectors but also unveiled CteX, an effector with no prior functional annotation. Structural determination revealed that CteX adopts a papain-like fold, and functional studies demonstrated that it acts as a

[Liver cell carcinoma--pathomorphology and differential diagnosis].

Modern imaging techniques permit the detection of small and smaller nodular lesions of the liver. The classification and differential diagnosis of these lesions is still mainly based on pathomorphological analysis. With the exception of metastases from extra-hepatic malignant tumors, hepatocellular carcinoma is the most frequent malignant tumor of the liver. Whereas the classical variant of hepatocellular carcinoma preferentially arises in the cirrhotic liver, the fibrolamellar variant is found without association to cirrhosis and hepatitis B infection in the liver of young adults. Differentia

Superinfection of focal liver lesions after bile duct procedures.

OBJECTIVES: Pyogenic liver abscess is a rare condition in the general population. The source of infection is most often biliary, and more rarely gastrointestinal via the portal tract, or even hematogenic. Other than in special contexts (scarring after radiofrequency ablation), focal liver lesions are not a usual risk factor for hepatic abscesses in patients with a history of bile duct procedures (sphincterotomy, biliary stenting, biliary enteric anastomosis). MATERIALS AND METHOD - RESULTS: We report four cases of focal liver lesions (two patients with benign lesions of the biliary cyst type a

[Clinical and electroencephalographic analysis of epilepsy in children with hydrocephalus].

Clinical and electroencephalographic features of epilepsy and the prognosis of intelligence were investigated in 156 children with hydrocephalus. Of these 53 (34.0%) had epilepsy. The incidence and outcome of epilepsy were determined by the etiology of hydrocephalus. The incidence was high in children with hydrocephalus caused by intra-cranial infection and dysgenetic hydrocephalus without dysraphism. Furthermore, it was difficult to control the epileptic seizures in these patients. In contrast, children with dysgenetic hydrocephalus caused by dysraphism and simple hydrocephalus had lower inci

Phenotype and Clinicoradiological Differences in Multifocal and Focal Bronchiectasis.

Introduction: Bronchiectasis is a chronic progressive respiratory disease characterized by permanent dilatation of the bronchi. It is a complex condition with numerous different etiologies, co-morbidities, and a heterogeneous presentation. As we know, there is a lack of studies that describe the differences and compare the characteristics between focal and multifocal bronchiectasis. The aim of this study is to identify differences in clinical characteristics presentation, severity or distribution in focal and multifocal bronchiectasis, and prognostic implications. Methods: 126 patients with co

Effect of antilymphocyte serium on tacaribe virus infection in infant mice.

Tacaribe virus, a member of the arenovirus group, was demonstrated to have similarities in pathogenesis to the prototype virus of this group, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus. Treatment with antilymphocyte serum (ALS) doubled the survival time of mice neonatally infected with a lethal dose of Tacaribe virus. Twenty-one per cent of ALS-treated infected animals survived more than 30 days. All animals had recoverable virus in brains and serum for the duration of life, and there was no difference between virus growth curves of ALS-treated and control animals. No neutralizing or complement-

Speech-induced primary lingual dystonia: a rare focal dystonia.

Lingual dystonia, a type of focal dystonia that may be primary or secondary, is related to brain damage, neuroleptic use, neurodegenerative, metabolic, and neurodevelopmental disorders, varicella infection, and so on. However, primary lingual dystonia induced by speaking is a rare type of focal dystonia that is usually idiopathic in origin and is characterized by increased tonus of the tongue, which causes protrusion only during speaking. This report describes a 55-year-old male patient with lingual dystonia during speech. One interesting clinical feature of this case was that the speech distu

Asymptomatic colonic histoplasmosis in a patient receiving methotrexate.

Disease due to infection with Histoplasma capsulatum usually manifests as a disseminated infection in patients with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). However, it may also present with focal disease in patients with or without AIDS. Unusual presentations or less well-recognized risk factors may make diagnosis of histoplasmosis more difficult. We describe the case of a patient who presented for screening colonoscopy and was found to have isolated asymptomatic colonic histoplasmosis.

[Acute myocarditis caused by ECHO virus].

Enteroviral infection is characterized by clinical polymorphism. One of its clinical manifestation is myocarditis, which is usually caused by Coxsackie virus. ECHO viruses cause the disease mostly in childhood. The article presents a case of enteroviral (ECHO) infection complicated by pneumonia and focal myocarditis in a 41-year-old patient, hospitalized during a season of influenza and acute respiratory infections. Acute myocarditis was moderate and the patient recovered by day 23.

[Experimental models of toxoplasmosis. Pharmacological applications].

Toxoplasma gondii is an ubiquitous protozoan parasite causing severe or life-threatening infections in immunocompromised patients and in congenitally infected infants. Animal models have been extensively used to describe the pathology of infection and to identify new effective drugs for the treatment of congenital infections, chrorioretinitis and toxoplasmic encephalitis. Although inherent differences between man and animal can reduce the relevance of data obtained experimentally, animal models have greatly improved our knowledge on the various aspects of toxoplasmosis. [A predominant manifestation of pleural cryptococcosis in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome].

Systemic cryptococcosis occurs in at least 6% patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV). The lung infection by cryptococcus neoformans, less frequently observed than meningeal involvement, consists usually in focal parenchymal mycosis. Authors report an apparently isolated pleural cryptococcosis in a 41 years old mal with HIV infection. Diagnosis was performed initially by pleural and bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL) fluid culture. Characteristic cryptococcosis pathological and histologic findings from thoracoscopy and open pleural biopsy are described. Cryptococcus capsular po
