Food insecurity associated with elevated eating disorder symptoms, impairment, and eating disorder diagnoses in an American University student sample before and during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested the association between food insecurity and eating disorder (ED) pathology, including probable ED diagnosis, among two cohorts of university students before and during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: Students (n = 579) from a large Midwestern American university completed self-report questionnaires assessing frequency of ED behaviors, ED-related impairment, and individual food insecurity as measured by the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale 5, Clinical Impairment Assessment, and Radimer/Cornell, respectively. Chi-square tests and MANOVA with post-hoc…

Evaluating the role of youth-onset diabetes mellitus in the context of food insecurity and preventive care: a repeated cross-sectional study using propensity score weighted machine learning analysis.

BACKGROUND: Youth-onset diabetes mellitus (DM) is an increasing public health concern, especially among adolescents facing socioeconomic challenges. Food insecurity (FI), a key social determinant of health, has been linked to adverse metabolic outcomes, but its association with youth-onset DM and the role of preventive care remain unclear. METHODS: Using repeated cross-sectional data from the National Survey of Children's Health (2016-2021), we examined the association between FI status (food secure, mild FI and moderate-to-severe FI) and youth-onset DM among adolescents aged 10-17 years. We …

Prioritizing food systems interventions to reduce adolescents' nutrition insecurity and malnutrition in low-income settings: protocol for the Dishi Fiti Ishi Fiti (Eat Well Live Well) mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents in informal urban communities, defined as settlements that fall outside of formal governmental planning and regulatory frameworks, are at increasing risk of poor-quality diets and malnutrition in all its forms. The food environment is the interface of adolescent food choice and the broader food system, and food environment interventions have the potential to improve adolescent diets and nutritional outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct a mixed-methods study, integrating methods from participatory systems science and nutritional epidemiology to characterise

Household Food Insecurity Is Associated with Adverse Mental Health Indicators and Lower Quality of Life among Koreans: Results from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2012-2013.

Food insecurity is an ongoing public health issue and contributes to mental health status. We investigated whether food insecurity is associated with inadequate nutrient intake and whether it affects mental health indicators (perceived stress/experience of depressive symptom/suicidal ideation) and quality of life (QOL) among Koreans (n = 5862, 20-64 years) using data from the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (2012-2013). Household food security status was categorized as "food-secure household", "food-insecure household without hunger", and "food-insecure household with …

Relationship between household food insecurity and minimum dietary diversity among pregnant women attending antenatal care at public health facilities in Fiche town, Oromia region, Central Ethiopia: A facility-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women experiencing food insecurity often compromise the quality of their nutrition by consuming a monotonous diet. Food insecurity and dietary monotony, defined as lack of variety in one's diet, are two importan vt factors that cause undernutrition. Different studies focused on the factors associated with minimum dietary diversity, and there is limited evidence regarding the relationship between minimum dietary diversity and household food insecurity. Therefore, this study aims to assess the relationship between household food insecurity and minimum dietary diversity among…

Immediate impact of stay-at-home orders to control COVID-19 transmission on socioeconomic conditions, food insecurity, mental health, and intimate partner violence in Bangladeshi women and their families: an interrupted time series.

BACKGROUND: Stay-at-home orders (lockdowns) have been deployed globally to control COVID-19 transmission, and might impair economic conditions and mental health, and exacerbate risk of food insecurity and intimate partner violence. The effect of lockdowns in low-income and middle-income countries must be understood to ensure safe deployment of these interventions in less affluent settings. We aimed to determine the immediate impact of COVID-19 lockdown orders on women and their families in rural Bangladesh. METHODS: An interrupted time series was used to compare data collected from families i…

Water insecurity in a syndemic context: Understanding the psycho-emotional stress of water insecurity in Lesotho, Africa.

Syndemics occur when populations experience synergistic and multiplicative effects of co-occurring epidemics. Proponents of syndemic theory highlight the importance of understanding the social context in which diseases spread and cogently argue that there are biocultural effects of external stresses such as food insecurity and water insecurity. Thus, a holistic understanding of disease or social vulnerability must incorporate an examination of the emotional and social effects of these phenomena. This paper is a response to the call for a renewed focus on measuring the psycho-emotional and psyc…

Food Security: An Unmet Need in Outpatient Burn Care.

Nutrition is paramount for wound healing after burn injury. With rising food prices and time off work due to burn injuries, access to adequate nutrition may be a significant financial stressor. We asked patients at an outpatient burn clinic to complete the Household Food Security Module, which queries about food security over the preceding 12 months. Demographics and burn characteristics were abstracted from the medical record. We assessed the overall prevalence of food insecurity, risk factors for food insecurity, and potential effects of food insecurity on nutritional status and wound healin…

Housing circumstances are associated with household food access among low-income urban families.

Household food insecurity is a pervasive problem in North America with serious health consequences. While affordable housing has been cited as a potential policy approach to improve food insecurity, the relationship between conventional notions of housing affordability and household food security is not well understood. Furthermore, the influence of housing subsidies, a key policy intervention aimed at improving housing affordability in Western countries, on food insecurity is unclear. We undertook a cross-sectional survey of 473 families in market rental (n = 222) and subsidized (n = 251) hou…
