A qualitative exploration of barriers, facilitators and best practices for implementing environmental sustainability standards and reducing food waste in veterans affairs hospitals.

BACKGROUND: To improve the healthfulness of foods offered while accelerating the use of environmental sustainability practices, it is important to engage hospital food service operators in the adoption of such practices. The purpose of this study was to explore barriers, facilitators and best practices for implementing environmental sustainability standards in food service among veterans affairs (VA) hospitals in the United States. METHODS: We conducted an online survey with 14 VA hospital food service directors and then 11 qualitative interviews. The survey assessed motivations for initiatin

D-pFoodReQ: Answer-Frequency-Aware Debiasing for Constrained Knowledge-Base Question Answering in Food Recommendation.

Food recommendation systems must satisfy dietary preferences and nutritional, health, and ingredient constraints. In constrained food knowledge-base question answering, unequal positive training-answer frequency may influence ranking without necessarily reflecting query-recipe fit. We develop D-pFoodReQ by replacing the pFoodReQ answer ranker with BAMnet-D while retaining its food-knowledge and constraint-processing pipeline. BAMnet-D introduces a separate answer-frequency branch alongside semantic matching, applies candidate-set-relative loss reweighting, and uses a counterfactual-inspired in

Understanding selective predation: Are energy and nutrients important?

For generalist predators, a mixed diet can be advantageous as it allows individuals to exploit a potentially broad range of profitable food types. Despite this, some generalist predators show preferences for certain types of food and may forage selectively in places or at times when these foods are available. One such species is the lesser hairy-footed dunnart (Sminthopsis youngsoni). Usually considered to be a generalist insectivore, in the Simpson Desert, Australia, this small marsupial predator has been found to selectively consume wolf spiders (Family Lycosidae), for reasons yet unknown. Needs and perceptions regarding healthy eating among people at risk of food insecurity: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Healthy eating behaviour is an essential determinant of overall health. This behaviour is generally poor among people at risk of … ion knowledge. However, eating behaviour was strongly influenced by both social factors (e.g. child food preferences and cultural food habits), and physical environmental factors (e.g. temptations in the local food environment). Perceived barriers for healthy eating behaviour included poor mental health, financial stress, and high food prices. Participants had a g …

Dissociation of consummatory and vocal components of feeding in squirrel monkeys treated with benzodiazepines and alcohol.

The primary aim of the current experiments was to develop methods that engender vocalizations associated with positive social situations comprising affiliative behavior and feeding that could be quantified under controlled laboratory conditions and were sensitive to anxiolytic drugs. Classical conditioning procedures were used to elicit vocalizations during presentation of stimulus lights (i.e., CS condition) previously paired with either preferred foods (e.g., grapes, peanuts, bananas) or standard foods (e.g., monkey chow) as well as during presentation of both food types (i.e., UCS condition

[Etiology and clinical technology of the food impaction with tight proximal contacts].

Food impaction with tight proximal contacts, also known as kinetic food impaction and food impaction without anatomical structure destruction, is mainly caused by a transient separation in contacts area during mastication. It's an intractable food impaction with high morbidity and low cure rate. There are two kinds of pathogenesis accepted: the shifting of anterior teeth incongruous with adjacent teeth or lack of anterior shifting; lack of food escape grooves. The preferred treatment is occlusal adjustment, but it's difficult to determine the area and extent of selective grinding, to quantify

Neuroimmune circuits involved in β-lactoglobulin-induced food allergy.

Several antigens can act as allergens eliciting IgE-mediated food allergy reactions when fed to sensitized animals. One of them is ovalbumin (OVA) which is the main allergen in egg white. Allergic mice develop aversion to OVA consumption. This aversive behavior is associated with anxiety, and it can be transferred to non-sensitized mice by injection of serum of allergic mice. However, it is yet to be determined whether altered behavior is a general component of food allergy or whether it is specific for some types of allergens. Cow's milk allergy is the most prevalent food allergy that usually

Aboveground phytochemical responses to belowground herbivory in poplar trees and the consequence for leaf herbivore preference.

Belowground (BG) herbivory can influence aboveground (AG) herbivore performance and food preference via changes in plant chemistry. Most evidence for this phenomenon derives from studies in herbaceous plants but studies in woody plants are scarce. Here we investigated whether and how BG herbivory on black poplar (Populus nigra) trees by Melolontha melolontha larvae influences the feeding preference of Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth) caterpillars. In a food choice assay, caterpillars preferred to feed on leaves from trees that had experienced attack by BG herbivores. Therefore, we investigated th

Neuroimmune signaling: Dopamine release from fat tissue mediates pathogen avoidance.

Animals must quickly learn to avoid food that makes them sick. A recent study in Drosophila melanogaster shows that ingesting pathogenic bacteria triggers dopamine release from fat cells that alters odor responses in the fly brain and switches feeding preference toward non-pathogenic food.

Assessment of Correlation of Salivary Factors with Genetic Taste Perception in Preschool Children with and without Early Childhood Caries: An In Vivo Study.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) has a prevalence of 46.9% in India and a complex multifactorial etiology primarily governed by individual food preferences, oral hygiene practices, and salivary constituents. Food preferences are genetically predetermined by the TAS2R38 gene, mediating insensitivity to bitter taste, like that of phenylthiouracil (PTC). Based on this, people can be classified as tasters and nontasters, respectively, aiding in determining their caries susceptibility. Oral hygiene practices and saliva also play a major role in the inherent protective mechanisms that can be…

Gustatory responses in macaque monkeys revealed with fMRI: Comments on taste, taste preference, and internal state.

Studies of the neural mechanisms underlying value-based decision making typically employ food or fluid rewards to motivate subjects to perform cognitive tasks. Rewards are often treated as interchangeable, but it is well known that the specific tastes of foods and fluids and the values associated with their taste sensations influence choices and contribute to overall levels of food consumption. Accordingly, we characterized the gustatory system in three macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and examined whether gustatory responses were modulated by preferences and hydration status. To identify tast

Memory, mood, dopamine, and serotonin in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-lesioned mouse model of basal ganglia injury.

The 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-lesioned mouse serves as a model of basal ganglia injury and Parkinson's disease. The present study investigated the effects of MPTP-induced lesioning on associative memory, conditioned fear, and affective behavior. Male C57BL/6 mice were administered saline or MPTP and separate groups were evaluated at either 7 or 30 days post-lesioning. In the social transmission of food preference test, mice showed a significant decrease in preference for familiar food 30 days post-MPTP compared to controls. Mice at both 7 and 30 days post-MPTP lesioni

Reversal of innate aversions: attempts to induce a preference for chili peppers in rats.

Although humans frequently develop preferences for innately unpalatable bitter or irritant substances, such preferences are extremely rare in animals. An attempt was made to understand the nature of this difference by systematic experiments with laboratory rats, with chili pepper as the unpalatable substance. In parallel with major aspects of the human experience with chili pepper, rats were exposed to it as a flavoring in all their food for periods up to 11 mo from birth, without significant preference enhancement. Gradual introduction of chili into the diet also had no effect, nor did a seri

The gustatory pathway is involved in CD36-mediated orosensory perception of long-chain fatty acids in the mouse.

The sense of taste informs the body about the quality of ingested foods. Tastant-mediated signals are generated by a rise in free intracellular calcium levels ([Ca(2+)]i) in the taste bud cells and then are transferred to the gustatory area of brain via connections between the gustatory nerves (chorda tympani and glossopharyngeal nerves) and the nucleus of solitary tract in the brain stem. We have recently shown that lingual CD36 contributes to fat preference and early digestive secretions in the mouse. We show here that 1) the induction of an increase in [Ca(2+)]i by linoleic acid is CD36-dep

Solitary male chacma baboons in a desert canyon.

Solitary and paired adult (nine) and subadult (one) male chacma baboons, Papio ursinus, were observed over a period of years living in part of a wooded desert canyon not used by adjacent troops. These extratroop males were silent when alone and gave only one alarm vocalization, the "wa-hoo" call, when paired. The space occupied by them is unsuitable for use by troops according to criteria for adequate sleeping sites and access to water. But the foods available to them, especially figs, but also other fruits and fresh acacia seeds, were abundant. These foods are more highly preferred by baboons
