Non-Hodgkin lymphoma originating from the frontal sinus.

Primary lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses is a rare entity. Most cases are reported to occur in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses as well as the nasal cavity. Primary involvement of the frontal sinus is very rare. We report a 68-year-old man with a diagnosis of B-cell lymphoma (non-Hodgkin lymphoma) originating from his frontal sinus.

Assessment of human sinus cavity air volume using tunable diode laser spectroscopy, with application to sinusitis diagnostics.

Sinusitis is a very common disease and improved diagnostic tools are desirable also in view of reducing over-prescription of antibiotics. A non-intrusive optical technique called GASMAS (GAs in Scattering Media Absorption Spectroscopy), which has a true potential of being developed into an important complement to other means of detection, was utilized in this work. Water vapor in the frontal sinuses, related to the free gas volume, was studied at around 937 nm in healthy volunteers. The results show a good stability of the GASMAS signals over extended times for the frontal sinuses for all volu

[Invasive aspergillosis sinusitis in patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus].

Invasive aspergillus sinusitis invasive is a rare, life threatening infection observed in immunocompromised patients. We report three cases of patients with AIDS. Diagnosis was based on surgical biopsy specimen performed on patients with unilateral sinusitis with facial pain and osteolysis on CT scanning, associated in one patient with neurological disorders. One patient with frontal sinusitis and meningeal involvement died despite therapy. One patient with limited maxillary sinusitis who underwent surgical satisfactory resection and antifungal therapy was successfully treated without relapse …

Current view on the structure and function of the frontal sinus: literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Chronic inflammatory diseases of the mucous membranes of the nose, paranasal sinuses, and pharynx are the most common pathology of the upper airways. Pathological processes develop more often in the maxillary and ethmoidal sinuses than in the frontal ones; however, the clinical course of frontitis is more severe. Fundamental understanding of the specific structure of frontal sinuses is crucial in the awareness of the precursors of the onset and development of its pathology, the choice of methods of diagnostics and treatment. The aim: The paper was aimed at the analysis

A Giant Maxillary Mucocele Presenting Left Cheek Swelling.

A paranasal sinus mucocele is an epithelial-lined, mucus-containing sac that completely fills the sinus and forms an expandable cystic structure. It most commonly affects the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses, and rarely the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. Orbital displacement or external disfigurement resulting from the expansion of the frontal or ethmoid sinuses is common; however, facial asymmetry caused by maxillary bone remodeling is rare. We describe a case of large maxillary sinus mucocele that destroyed the maxillary sinus bony wall, resulting in notable left cheek swelling and disfigureme

Orbital cellulitis secondary to a fungal sinusitis caused by Scopulariopsis: The first case in Tunisia.

We report a case of invasive fungal sinusitis caused by Scopulariopsis in 57 year-old man who had recurrence of orbital cellulitis. CT-scan and magnetic resonance imaging found an orbital cellulitis associated to a left frontal sinusitis with bone erosion and calcification. Patient was treated by surgical debridement and voriconazole. Culture of excised tissue was positive for Scopulariopsis.

Solitary neurofibroma of the frontal sinus.

Isolated or solitary neurofibromas of the paranasal sinuses are rare. Mostly, they involve the maxillary sinus and so far, a solitary neurofibroma of the frontal sinus has never been reported in the literature. We present a case of frontal sinus neurofibroma treated successfully with surgical excision. A 28-year-old male presented with forehead swelling and computed tomography images revealed a tumor involving the left frontal sinus. Histopathological examination showed the tumor to be a neurofibroma. We discuss the clinical and pathological characteristics of neurofibroma arising in the nasal

Volumetric Changes of the Paranasal Sinuses with Age: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: There are four pairs of paranasal sinuses: maxillary, ethmoidal, frontal, and sphenoidal. It is common to see changes in size and shape throughout life, so understanding the effect of age on sinus volume can help in radiographic studies and in planning dental and surgical procedures in the sinus-nasal region. The aim of the present systematic review was to perform a qualitative synthesis of available studies which assess the volumetric characteristics of the sinuses and their changes according to age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A sys

The paranasal sinuses in CT-imaging: development from birth to age 25.

Available data about the size of the different sinuses to date are derived from anatomical or radiological studies. In order to verify or possibly correct the findings of other authors we evaluated the cranial computed tomography (CT)-images of more than 5600 patients. We measured the sex-linked and age-dependent width and length of the four sinuses for both sides in axial sections. For the first time we have a clear picture of the development of the paranasal sinuses for both sexes from birth until the age of 25 years. Our results confirm general ideas concerning the size of the sinuses. More

Carolyn's Window Approach for frontal sinus in Asian Noses.

PURPOSE: There has been concern regarding the applicability of the Carolyn’s Window Approach (CWA) to Asian patients because the nasal corridors in Asians are typically narrower externally with lower radix height compared to Western noses. This study evaluated the success rates and frontal sinus patency outcomes of the CWA in a cohort of Asian patients. METHODS: Patients (≥ 18 years) who underwent frontal sinus surgery via CWA were consecutively enrolled. Patients were followed at 3 and 6 months after surgery. Anthropometric data on nasal appearance were obtained from CT scans. The outcomes we

Frontal sinus surgery in children.

Surgery for frontal sinusitis in children is unusual. When required, surgery for ostiomeatal disease or, in certain circumstances, frontal sinus trephination is usually all that is required. Nevertheless, for a few children, surgery of the nasofrontal recess and frontal sinus is required and can be very beneficial. A variety of surgical approaches to the frontal sinus are discussed. Functional endoscopic surgery based upon physiologic principles and the concept of reversible disease is emphasized.

[A-mode echography of frontal sinus aplasia].

Twenty-five patients with radiologically proven unilateral frontal sinuses were examined by A-mode ultrasound and the aplastic sinus was compared with the air-filled sinus on the other side. The number of echoes as well as the amplitude and time behaviour of each side were recorded. Statistical evaluation showed no difference in the sonographic parameters between the two sides. Identification of aplastic frontal sinuses by ultrasound is not possible.
