A brand-new self-folding biscavitand was synthesized from a feet-to-feet-connected bisresorcinarene. The X-ray crystal structure of the biscaivtand showed that the two cavities are tightly connected with four butylene linkages. The conformationally coupled two cavities accommodated two cationic guests, showing a homotropic negative cooperativity in nonpolar solvents (toluene and chloroform). A polar tetrahydrofuran solvent weakened the cyclic hydrogen bonding interactions of the biscavitand, which resulted in noncooperative guest binding.

The production of furfuryl alcohol from green coffee during roasting and the effect of multiple parameters on its formation were studied employing HPLC-DAD. Results show that coffee produces furfuryl alcohol in larger quantities (418µg/g) compared to other beans or seeds (up to 132µg/g) roasted under the same conditions. The kinetics of furfuryl alcohol production resemble those of other process contaminants (e.g., HMF, acrylamide) produced in coffee roasting, with temperature and time of roasting playing significant roles in quantities formed. A novel Pd-catalyzed cascade alkoxycarbonylative macrolactonization to construct tetrahydropyran/tetrahydrofuran-containing bridged macrolactones in one step from alkendiols is described. Products with various ring sizes and substituents were obtained. Challenging macrolactones involving tertiary alcohols were synthesized smoothly as well. Mechanistically, experimental evidence to support a trans-oxypalladation step has been provided. The method was applied to the synthesis of potent anticancer compound 9-demethylneopeltolide.

Facile nitrite reduction was achieved using [Fe(II)(HCTPPH)NO] as the starting compound to react with NaNO(2). Stoichiometric studies allow the isolation of both {Fe(NO)}(6) and {Fe(NO)}(7) nitrosyl complexes and provide insight into the proton and electron transfer processes during the nitrite reduction. Treating [Fe(CTPP)NO] with acid or oxidizing [Fe(HCTPP)NO] with AgClO(4) yields intermediate [Fe(HCTPP)NO](+). The conversion cycles starting from {Fe(NO)}(6) [Fe(CTPP)NO] to {Fe(NO)}(6) [Fe(HCTPP)NO][ClO(4)] then to {Fe(NO)}(7) [Fe(HCTPP)NO] and vice versa were constructed.
