Biological consilience of hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide in plants: Gases of primordial earth linking plant, microbial and animal physiologies.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is produced in the mammalian body through the enzymatic activities of cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3MST). A growing number of studies have revealed that biogenic H2S produced in tissues is involved in a variety of physiological responses in mammals including vasorelaxation and neurotransmission. It is now evident that mammals utilize H2S to regulate multiple signaling systems, echoing the research history of the gaseous signaling molecules nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) that had previous

Physical and physicochemical factors effecting transport of chlorohydrocarbon gases from lung alveolar air to blood as measured by the causation of narcosis.

This systematic investigation examines gas transport in the lung for two sets of chlorohydrocarbons (CHCs): the chloromethanes (C1) and chloroethanes (C2). The C1 series includes chloromethane, methylene chloride, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride, and the C2 series includes chloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane, and 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethane. Most CHC gases cause narcosis. The comprehensive narcosis work of Lehmann and colleagues on CHCs was used as a basis for the narcosis endpoint in the present examination. The sites for narcosis are located in the brain (midline …

Effects of dihydrocodeine, alcohol, and caffeine on breathlessness and exercise tolerance in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease and normal blood gases.

We measured breathlessness and exercise tolerance in 12 patients with chronic airways obstruction, moderate or severe breathlessness, and low or normal arterial carbon dioxide tension, after the patients received dihydrocodeine, alcohol, caffeine, or placebo (through double-blind administration). Forty-five minutes after ingestion, dihydrocodeine had reduced breathlessness by 20 per cent and increased exercise tolerance by 18 per cent, with a reduction in ventilation and oxygen consumption at submaximal work loads but with no change in spirometric volumes. Oxygen also reduced breathlessness an

Translocation of the umbilical artery to the lower abdomen: an adjunct to the postoperative monitoring of arterial blood gases in major abdominal wall defects.

A technique is presented for preserving the umbilical arteries for postoperative monitoring of arterial blood gases after repair of giant omphaloceles and gastroschisis. Translocation of the arteries to the lower abdominal wall removes them from the operative field and allows cannulation and long-term blood sampling. Complications have been minimal and the improved application of modern pulmonary support mechanisms has materially contributed to better patient management. The technique is a simple one and may prove applicable to other major newborn medical and surgical diseases involving respir…

Microbial enzyme-driven carbon-nitrogen cycling processes of greenhouse gases in sandy sediments of river-oasis systems in arid regions.

Arid inland rivers are important components of the land-water-ocean continuum, yet the linkages among sediment texture, microbial-mediated processes, and greenhouse gas (GHG) production remain poorly understood in sandy systems. Here, we investigated surface (0-5 cm) and subsurface (5-10 cm) sediments from the Niya River Basin, a desert-oasis agricultural river in northwestern China, by integrating sediment particle-size characterization, physicochemical measurements, extracellular enzyme assays, GHG production experiments, and multivariate analyses. We examined how sediment texture and carbon

Observation of Concentration-Dependent Inversion of Response to Oxidizing Gases in Chemoresistive Metal Oxide Gas Sensors Resulting from Humidity Interference.

Chemoresistive metal oxide gas sensors typically exhibit predictable resistance changes upon exposure to oxidizing or reducing gases, depending on their semiconductor type. However, anomalous concentration-dependent inversion of response has been reported, often attributed to intrinsic material properties. In this study, we investigate such inversion phenomena in Cr2O3-based sensors doped with Ti(IV), W(VI), and Ni(II), alongside Ag-decorated WO3 sensors. Initial observations suggested inversion of response to low concentrations of O2, consistent with prior hypotheses involving carrier-type tr…

Health risks associated with seaweed strandings: sulfur gases and antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria from decaying Ulva intestinalis and Sargassum muticum.

Seaweed strandings can cover several km2 with many 1000s of tonnes of biomass and are of international concern. They have a substantial environmental impact locally, including through the release of malodorous corrosive and toxic volatiles causing respiratory illness and death. The toxic gases hydrogen sulfide and ammonia have been suggested as the main hazardous gases but limited information on the diversity and quantity of volatiles released from decomposing seaweeds is available. Here we use proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and gas chromatography with flame-photometric de…

Arterial Blood Gases in Normal Subjects at 2240 Meters Above Sea Level: Impact of Age, Gender, and Body Mass Index.

BACKGROUND: The values of arterial blood gases (ABG) change with altitude above sea level; empirical verification is essential because ventilatory acclimatization varies with ethnicity and a population's adaptation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to describe ABG in a healthy population residing at 2,240 meters above sea level, to identify the mean level of alveolar ventilation (PaCO2), and to know whether a progressive increase in PaCO2 occurs with age and the impact of increasing body mass index (BMI). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in a referral center for respiratory d…

Gas embolism under standard versus low pneumoperitoneum pressure during laparoscopic liver resection (GASES): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Gas embolism induced by CO2 pneumoperitoneum is commonly identified as a risk factor for morbidity, especially cardiopulmonary morbidity, after laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) in adults. Increasing pneumoperitoneum pressure (PP) contributes to gas accumulation following laparoscopy. However, few studies have examined the effects of PP in the context of LLR. In LLR, the PP-central venous pressure (CVP) gradient is increased due to hepatic vein rupture, hepatic sinusoid exposure, and low CVP management, which together increase the risk of CO2 embolization. The aim of this study is

Comparison of Simultaneous Capillary Blood Gases and End-Tidal Carbon Dioxide in Mechanically Ventilated Pediatric Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure.

Liver cirrhosis in infancy can be secondary to various etiologies such as biliary atresia, familial cholestatic and metabolic disorders. Wolman's disease (WD) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by the absence of lysosomal acid lipase enzyme activity and a significant association with infantile cholestasis and cirrhosis. We encountered an infant presenting with advanced cirrhosis and decompensation having splenomegaly for which the underlying etiology was found to be WD and the diagnostic clue came from abdominal X-ray showing bilateral adrenal calcifications. The diagnosis was confirmed by

Acidic Gases Separation from Gas Mixtures on the Supported Ionic Liquid Membranes Providing the Facilitated and Solution-Diffusion Transport Mechanisms.

Nowadays, the imidazolium-based ionic liquids containing acetate counter-ions are attracting much attention as both highly selective absorbents of the acidic gases and CO₂ carriers in the supported ionic liquid membranes. In this regard, the investigation of the gas transport properties of such membranes may be appropriate for better understanding of various factors affecting the separation performance and the selection of the optimal operating conditions. In this work, we have tested CH₄, CO₂ and H₂S permeability across the supported ionic liquid membranes impregnated by 1-butyl-3-methylimida…

Parallel-plate wet denuder coupled ion chromatograph for near-real-time detection of trace acidic gases in clean room air.

This paper describes the performance of our automated acidic (CH(3)COOH, HCOOH, HCl, HNO(2), SO(2), and HNO(3)) gases monitor utilizing a parallel-plate wet denuder (PPWD). The PPWD quantitatively collects gaseous contaminants at a high sample flow rate (∼8 dm(3) min(-1)) compared to the conventional methods used in a clean room. Rapid response to any variability in the sample concentration enables near-real-time monitoring. In the developed monitor, the analyte collected with the PPWD is pumped into one of two preconcentration columns for 15 min, and determined by means of ion chromatography.…

Effect of hemidiaphragmatic paresis caused by interscalene brachial plexus block on breathing pattern, chest wall mechanics, and arterial blood gases.

We investigated the effects of hemidiaphragmatic paresis caused by interscalene brachial plexus block on breathing patterns, chest wall mechanics, and arterial blood gas tensions using respiratory inductive plethysmography. Ten healthy patients received interscalene block with 20-40 mL 1.5% lidocaine with epinephrine. Rib cage contribution to tidal volume (%RC) increased from 28.9% +/- 9.7% to 50.0% +/- 8.3% (P < 0.01), respiratory frequency (f) increased from 14.6 +/- 3.2/min to 16.3 +/- 2.4/min (P < 0.05), and PaO2 decreased from 84.7 +/- 7.3 mm Hg to 78.0 +/- 9.5 mm Hg (P < 0.05). CoFe Oxides-Coated 2D Black Phosphorus for Flame-Retardant Nanocoatings with Tunable Mechanical Strength and Efficient Elimination of Toxic Gases.

2D black phosphorus (BP) degrades irreversibly into phosphate compounds under ambient conditions, which limits its application in a variety of fields. In this study, by coating amorphous ferric-cobalt oxides (CoFeO) on BP nanosheets, a multifunctional CoFeO@2D BP is successfully developed that effectively inhibited combustion and catalyzed CO oxidation to eliminate toxic gases. Strong affinity between transition-metal cations and BP allowed the uniform growth of amorphous ferric‒cobalt oxides on the BP surface, which effectively prevented the spontaneous degradation of 2D BP. By combining CoFe…
