BACKGROUND: Emergency medical services (EMS) staff worldwide have long been at risk of encountering violence and aggression (V&A) at work, including threats, verbal, physical and sexual assault, and on rare occasions, fatalities occur. Exposure to V&A can result in stress, fear and burnout. This is an international problem and EMS employers, trade unions and others are working towards tackling it. The aim of this research was to conduct an exploratory qualitative interview study of EMS staff focusing on experiences, perceptions and interpretations of V&A directed towards them.

BACKGROUND: Workplace sexual violence against women is a pressing global issue with scarce knowledge on its health implications. Existing research is largely limited to specific occupations, which calls for comprehensive, population-based studies. This study aimed to examine the associations between self-labelled workplace sexual violence and a variety of health outcomes in a nationally representative sample of Icelandic women aged 18-69 years.
METHODS: Participants in this cross-sectional study were women in the Stress-And-Gene-Analysis (SAGA) cohort who answered the question regarding workp

BACKGROUND: Reproductive health counseling is essential for adolescents and young adults (AYAs). Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) AYAs would benefit from tailored counseling given concerns about iatrogenic infertility and sexual dysfunction, and high rates of interpersonal violence, unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, yet there are multiple obstacles to providing this care at the patient/family and clinician levels.
OBJECTIVES: This narrative review summarizes the literature on reproductive health considerations for TGD AYAs, current practices, and clinician barrier

INTRODUCTION: Ukraine's volatile HIV epidemic, one of the largest in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, remains concentrated in people who inject drugs (PWID). HIV prevalence is high (21.3% to 41.8%) among the estimated 310,000 PWID. Opioid agonist therapy (OAT) is the most cost-effective HIV prevention strategy there, yet OAT services are hampered by negative attitudes and frequent harassment of OAT clients and site personnel by law enforcement. This paper examines the various types of police violence that Ukrainian PWID experience and factors associated with the different types of violence, as

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACE) accounts for up to 1.9 million heart disease cases. This study extends research by examining the association between heart disease and four-forms of ACE heterogeneity (i.e. counts, scores, clusters, and individually) among Black men and women.
DESIGN: Data come from the 2019-2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System's ACE supplement (n = 30,746). Latent class analysis of eleven ACEs - verbal, physical, or sexual abuse; experiencing divorced parents, rape, or sexual coercion; or living in a household with domestic violence, impr

Korean refugee women are at risk of multiple violent victimizations throughout the migration phases. However, migration's association with mental health outcomes has received little scholarly attention. This study examined North Korean refugee women's exposure to polyvictimization-exposure to both gender-based violence (GBV) and intimate partner violence (IPV)-and explored whether polyvictimization is associated with an increased risk of psychological symptoms. Data from a snowball sample of 212 North Korean refugee women were analyzed. Polyvictimization was operationalized as No victimization…

An ecological perspective was used to predict school violence from a number of variables describing the students and their families based on nationally representative sample of 10,400 students in grades 7-11 in 162 schools across Israel. Self-administered anonymous questionnaires that included a scale for reporting victimization by serious and moderate physical violence, threats, and verbal-social victimization were filled out during class. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) examined the relationships between students' reports of victimization and student level variables (gender, age) and the

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, natural language processing and related decision-support methods are increasingly studied in intimate partner violence (IPV), domestic-violence and gender-based violence contexts. The key question is not whether AI can predict femicide as an individual lethal event, but whether AI-related methods may help institutions recognise, document, communicate and act on distributed signs of escalation across clinical, legal, police, social-service and digital settings.

This advocacy statement endeavors to clarify the concept of the hymen as a symbol of "virginity." The anatomic variants of this structure precludes any correlation to prior sexual activity and the value of physical assessment of this structure is thus questioned. Moreover, physical examination of the hymen is painful, traumatic, and humiliating and is a form of gender-based violence. This statement exhorts various sectors-governments, educators, the medical community, and the general public-to discard the concept of the "virgin hymen," avoid its use when documenting sexual abuse, and provide p…

Female sex workers (FSWs) are disproportionately affected by both HIV and gender-based violence, such as that perpetrated by clients (CPV). We used a structural determinants framework to assess correlates of physical or sexual CPV in the past 6 months among FSWs in the Mexico/U.S. border cities of Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis identified individual, client, interpersonal, work environment and macrostructural factors associated with recent CPV. Among 496 FSWs, 5 % experienced recent CPV. Witnessing violence towards other FSWs in one's neighbo…

BACKGROUND: Half of the world's children experience violence every year, but the meaning of violence is not universally agreed. We may therefore risk failing to measure, and address, the acts that matter most to children and adolescents. In this paper, we describe and synthesise evidence on how children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa conceptualise different behavioural acts which are deemed violence in childhood under WHO and UN CRC definitions.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a systematic review of qualitative studies. We searched PsychINFO, CINAHL, Embase, Global Health, Medline a

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women living with HIV are at increased risk of depression, anxiety, stigma, gender-based violence, and poor engagement in prevention of mother-to-child transmission services. Psychosocial interventions are increasingly used to complement routine maternal and HIV care, yet evidence remains fragmented across intervention types, settings, and outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to map psychosocial interventions designed to improve mental health and well-being among pregnant women living with HIV.

Ernestine's pilot-tested a new theory-informed Community-Crisis/Outreach Response Model of nonresidential GBV service, which critically features a specialized and intensive stream of service.

Employment is a social determinant of health, yet people who use drugs (PWUD) often face barriers to employment. To meet their financial needs, some engage in alternate income-generating activities (e.g., sex work, recycling, drug selling) that expose them to social and health-related harm. Drawing from two cohorts of community-recruited PWUD in Vancouver, Canada (n=2366, 2006-2023), we used generalized estimating equations to characterize gendered patterns of income generation among men (n=1501, 63.4%) and women (n=865, 36.6%). Employment and income assistance were similarly patterned across

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health and criminal justice concern with significant impacts; especially high rates are seen among rural Hispanic American (HA) communities, the fastest growing population in the United States. They experience additional barriers to care including extreme poverty, lesser education, gender norms, and language and immigration issues.
METHOD: A systematic literature review was conducted using Cooper's framework to identify evidence supporting associations between interventions and prevention, reduction, and elimination of IPV among

This study explored the impact of developmental and recent traumas on PTSD, anxiety, and depression among a sample of university students (N = 410), including students who engaged in sex work during college. Using linear and hierarchical regressions, the study examined whether gender-based violence and potentially exploitative activities in college, specifically sexual assault (SA), sex work, sex trafficking, and intimate partner violence (IPV) contributed to mental health outcomes when controlling for childhood history. Post-traumatic stress (n = 153) was primarily predicted by more recent SA…

Homeless women veterans face unique vulnerability and significant mental health needs; it is important for their housing to include gender-specific safety measures. Providers of supportive housing for veterans can take important steps to accommodate the women they serve, including providing separate housing facilities or areas for women. More than half of all homeless women veterans were sexually assaulted during their military service, and many exhibit mental health disabilities as a result, which provides a strong legal basis for requiring gender-based accommodations. While significant progr
