BACKGROUND: Soil salinity and abscisic acid (ABA)-related signaling are major constraints affecting chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) productivity by promoting oxidative stress and aldehyde accumulation. Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs), particularly members of the ALDH7 family, are involved in aldehyde detoxification and redox homeostasis under adverse conditions. However, the molecular characteristics, expression behavior, and structural features of ALDH7A1 in chickpea under salt and ABA treatments remain insufficiently understood. Therefore, this study aimed to provide an integrative characteriz

Bitter gourd is an economically important horticultural crop for its edible and medicinal value. However, the regulatory mechanisms of bitter gourd in response to cold stress are still poorly elucidated. In this study, phytohormone determination and comparative transcriptome analyses in XY (cold-tolerant) and QF (cold-sensitive) after low temperature treatment were conducted. Under cold stress, the endogenous contents of abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) in XY were significantly increased at 24 h after treatment (HAT), indicating that ABA, JA and SA might function

Ethylene is a key element of plant physiology, thus ethylene research is important for both, fundamental research and agriculture. Previous work on ethylene receptors focused on expression level and protein interaction, but knowledge on regulation of gene transcription is scarce. Promoters of mango ethylene receptor genes (pMiERS1a, pMiERS1b) were analysed particularly regarding responsiveness to hormones. The promoter sequences reveal some variation and they were characterized by identifying functional regulatory candidate modules via truncated-promoter approach. Based on ectopic gene express

The widespread introduction of semi-dwarf1 (sd1), also known as the 'Green Revolution' gene, has dramatically increased rice yield. However, the extensive use of limited sources of dwarf genes may cause 'bottleneck' effects in breeding new rice varieties. Alternative dwarf germplasms are quite urgent for rice breeding. Here, we characterized a new allele of the rice Slr1-d mutant, Slr1-d6, which reduced plant height by 37%, a much milder allele for dwarfism. Slr-d6 was still responsive to gibberellin (GA) to a reduced extent. The mutation site in Slr1-d6 was less conserved in the TVHYNP domain

Understanding the interactions between mineral nutrition and disease is essential for crop management. Our previous studies with Arabidopsis thaliana demonstrated that potassium (K) deprivation induced the biosynthesis of jasmonic acid (JA) and increased the plant's resistance to herbivorous insects. Here, we addressed the question of how tissue K affects the development of fungal pathogens and whether sensitivity of the pathogens to JA could play a role for the K-disease relationship in barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Optic). We report that K-deprived barley plants showed increased leaf concentra

Petal patterns play an important role in the reproductive success of flowering plants by attracting pollinators and protecting against environmental factors. Some transcription factors (TFs) involved in petal epidermal cell differentiation have been identified, but little is known about the upstream processes that pre-pattern the petal surface to establish their expression domains. Here, we have developed a computational model of petal pattern evolution to investigate this pre-patterning phase, selecting for gene regulatory network (GRNs) that divide the petal into proximal and distal domains

In recent years, escalating global temperatures have adversely affected the yield and quality of horticultural crops. Red pears (Pyrus spp.), prized for their vibrant pigmentation, derive their characteristic coloration primarily from anthocyanin accumulation. Light and temperature are important environmental factors regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. Light induces the accumulation of anthocyanins in red pear; however, the specific molecular mechanism by which elevated temperatures inhibit anthocyanin biosynthesis in red pear remains unclear. The integration nodes of the light and temperatur

Evolutionarily, plants overproduce ovaries but selectively eliminate those inferiors to ensure competitive offspring to set. This sibling rivalry, reducing grain number, is detrimental agronomically. However, the interaction between early-fertilized and unfertilized ovaries in sequentially-pollinated panicles is unclear. Here, we fertilized the ovaries on half rows of maize ear (HP) while keeping the rest unfertilized to investigate their interaction. HP reduced the growth of unfertilized ovaries while promoting fertilized ovary (grain) development. 13C-isotope labeling of grains led to isotop

Hydroxyproline-O-galactosyltransferase (GALT) initiates O-glycosylation of arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs). We previously characterized GALT2 (At4g21060), and now report on functional characterization of GALT5 (At1g74800). GALT5 was identified using heterologous expression in Pichia and an in vitro GALT assay. Product characterization showed GALT5 specifically adds galactose to hydroxyproline in AGP protein backbones. Functions of GALT2 and GALT5 were elucidated by phenotypic analysis of single and double mutant plants. Allelic galt5 and galt2 mutants, and particularly galt2 galt5 double mutan

Mucuna pruriens is a well-known legume for the itching attributes of the trichome and a valuable medicinal herb that is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, sexual debilities, etc. Its cultivation was deprived due to its itching behavior. The wild genotype of M. pruriens have the largest trichome length (2015 ± 29 μm) compared to other genotype and mutants. The white-seeded variety of M. pruriens was found to be the most suitable for large-scale cultivation due to the small trichome size and less trichome density on the pod. The external surface trichomes have protuberance with unkno

Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tomato DC3000 (Pst DC3000) was the first pathogen to be demonstrated to infect Arabidopsis and to cause disease symptoms in the laboratory setting. However, the defense response to Pst DC3000 was unclear in tobacco. In this report, the expression profiles of twelve defense response-related genes were analyzed after treatment with salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and pathogen Pst DC3000 by qRT-PCR. According to our results, it could be presented that the genes primarily induced by SA were also induced to higher levels after Pst DC3000 infection. SA accumulation

BACKGROUND: Pepper is a crucial vegetable crop with significant economic value, yet its yield and quality are severely affected by pepper Phytophthora Blight. Our previous research indicated that CaSBP12 negatively regulates pepper resistance to Phytophthora capsici (P. capsici) infection. However, the precise role of CaSBP12 in the defense response against P. capsici remains unclear. Thus, it is essential to investigate the defense mechanisms by which CaSBP12 contributes to pepper resistance against P. capsici infection.
RESULTS: In this study, silencing CaSBP12 significantly increased the e

The Arabidopsis thaliana NONEXPRESSER OF PR GENES1 (NPR1, also known as NIM1) protein is an essential positive regulator of salicylic acid (SA)-induced PATHOGENESIS-RELATED (PR) gene expression and systemic acquired resistance (SAR). PR gene activity is regulated at the level of redox-dependent nuclear transport of NPR1. NPR1 interacts with members of the TGA family of transcription factors that are known to bind to SA-responsive elements in the PR-1 promoter. In an attempt to identify proteins involved in SA-mediated signal transduction, we previously described the isolation of three novel ge

This report shows detailed characterization of LOX gene family in sorghum and provides new insight of sorghum LOX genes in genetic structure and their roles in plant response to infestation by sugarcane aphids. Lipoxygenases (LOXs) are monomeric, nonheme iron-containing dioxygenases that initiate the fatty acid oxidation pathway creating oxylipins and plant hormone jasmonate both have a key role in plant development and defense. To date, a comprehensive and systematic analysis of sorghum LOXs is still deficient. Thus, we performed a genome-wide analysis of the sorghum LOXs genome and identifie

Glucosinolates in two genotypes of kale sprouts treated with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) were analyzed using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS). This approach enabled the identification of 13 distinct glucosinolates (GSLs) and the quantitative determination of their individual contents. Our results show that MeJA induced GSL biosynthesis, resulting in a significant increase in the total content of aliphatic, indolic, and aromatic GSLs, while also altering their compositional profiles. Notably, the contents of sinigri

Abscisic acid (ABA) is an endogenous phytohormone that plays an important role in regulating plant growth, development, and stress response. Pyrabactin resistance 1-like (PYR/PYL) proteins are ABA receptors and core components of ABA signalling in plants. This study identified nine PYL genes in the Brachypodium distachyon genome and they distribute on three chromosomes. Phylogenetical BdPYLs were classified into three clades. 81 protein-protein interactions between 9 BdPYLs and 9 BdPP2C proteins were predicted and 66 pairs were verified by yeast two-hybrid assay previously. Relatively, BdPYL g

Unlike in humans and animals, plant germlines are specified de novo from somatic cells in the reproductive organs of the flower. In most flowering plant ovules, the female germline starts with the differentiation of one megaspore mother cell (MMC), which initiates a developmental program distinct from adjoining cells. Phytohormones act as a key player in physiological processes during plant development, in particular by providing positional information that supports localized differentiation events. However, little is known about the role of phytohormones for female germline initiation and est

Rice is one of the world's most important foods, but its production suffers from insect pests, causing losses of billions of dollars, and extensive use of environmentally damaging pesticides for their control1,2. However, the molecular mechanisms of insect resistance remain elusive. Although a few resistance genes for planthopper have been cloned, no rice germplasm is resistant to stem borers. Here, we report that biosynthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in mammals3, is induced by insect infestation in rice, and its suppression confers resistance to planthoppers and stem borers, the two m

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Iron is an essential micronutrient for all organisms and its uptake, translocation, distribution and utilization are regulated in a complex manner in plants. FER, isolated from tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), was the first transcription factor involved in the iron homeostasis of higher plants to be identified. A FER defect in the T3238fer mutant drastically downregulates the expression of iron uptake genes, such as ferric-chelate reductase 1 (LeFRO1) and iron-regulated transporter 1 (LeIRT1); however, the molecular mechanism by which FER regulates genes downstream remains u

Small RNAs (sRNAs) are universal posttranscriptional regulators of gene expression and hundreds of sRNAs are frequently found in each and every bacterium. In order to coordinate cellular processes in response to ambient conditions, many sRNAs are differentially expressed. Here, we asked how these small regulators are regulated using Agrobacterium tumefaciens as a model system. Among the best-studied sRNAs in this plant pathogen are AbcR1 regulating numerous ABC transporters and PmaR, a regulator of peptidoglycan biosynthesis, motility, and ampicillin resistance. We report that the LysR-type re
