Towards an understanding of unique and shared pathways in the psychopathophysiology of ADHD.

Most attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) research has compared cases with unaffected controls. This has led to many associations, but uncertainties about their specificity to ADHD in contrast with other disorders. We present a selective review of research, comparing ADHD with other disorders in neuropsychological, neurobiological and genetic correlates. So far, a specific pathophysiological pathway has not been identified. ADHD is probably not specifically associated with executive function deficits. It is possible, but not yet established, that ADHD symptoms may be more specifical

[Progress in researches on spontaneously mutated mouse model of male infertility].

Male infertility in animals are caused by many factors and mostly by genetic mutations. Spontaneously mutated mice have long been used as important animal models for basic medical researches on human genetic diseases and as valuable research tools for discovering new genes and their functions. Spontaneously mutated mice are often detected as random genetic events in zoos or research institutions that house large groups of mice, and they carry various phenotypes, some of which can cause male sterility. This review summarizes the types of spontaneously mutated mice carrying male infertility-rela

The Core Outcome DEvelopment for Carrier Screening (CODECS) study: protocol for development of a core outcome set.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive genetic carrier screening is a type of genetic testing available to those planning a pregnancy, or during their first trimester, to understand their risk of having a child with a severe genetic condition. There is a lack of consensus for 'what to measure' in studies on this intervention, leading to heterogeneity in choice of outcomes and methods of measurement. Such outcome heterogeneity has implications for the quality and comparability of these studies and has led to a lack of robust research evidence in the literature to inform policy and decision-making around the

[Current Status of Translational Research on Irritable Bowel Syndrome].

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder. The pathophysiology of IBS is not completely understood. Genetic, immune, environmental, inflammatory, neurological and psychological factors contribute to the risk of this condition. Traditional research explored gastrointestinal motor abnormalities, central neural dysregulation, abnormal psychological features, and visceral hypersensitivity. More recent investigations consider bacterial overgrowth, abnormal serotonin pathways, altered gut flora, immune activation and mucosal inflammation. The purpose of this art

'And then you can decide'--antenatal foetal diagnosis decision making in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Decision making is integral to genetic counselling and the premise is that autonomous decisions emerge if patients are provided with information in a non-directive manner. The pivotal activity in antenatal diagnosis counselling with at-risk pregnant women is decision making regarding invasive procedures. This process is not well understood in multicultural settings. OBJECTIVE: This study examined multicultural genetic counselling interactions with women of advanced maternal age (AMA). It aimed to investigate the participants' orientation towards the amniocentesis decision. DESIGN

[Gender medicine. Sex- and gender-specific aspects of clinical medicine].

Gender medicine studies sex- and gender-based differences in the development and prevention of diseases, the awareness and presentation of symptoms, and the effectiveness of therapy. Gender medicine is part of personalized medicine, considering differences in biological and psychosocial factors individually. There are differences in genes, chromosomes, hormones, and metabolism as well as differences in culture, environment, and society. Lifelong interactions between physical and psychosocial factors will influence the health and ill-health of men and women in different ways. Epigenetic modific

Heritable thoracic aortic disease: a literature review on genetic aortopathies and current surgical management.

Heritable thoracic aortic disease puts patients at risk for aortic aneurysms, rupture, and dissections. The diagnosis and management of this heterogenous patient population continues to evolve. Last year, the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Joint Committee published diagnosis and management guidelines for aortic disease, which included those with genetic aortopathies. Additionally, evolving research studying the implications of underlying genetic aberrations with new genetic testing continues to become available. In this review, we evaluate the current literature surr

Identification of strain specific markers in Bacillus anthracis by random amplification of polymorphic DNA.

Classification and differentiation of Bacillus anthracis isolates by genetic markers play an important role in anthrax research. We used a PCR based method--Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD)--to identify genetic markers in B. anthracis strains. Twenty-five differential genetic markers were identified which divided the strains into five different groups. Three selected RAPD-markers were cloned and sequenced. The five RAPD-derived genotypes could be defined by integration of these three markers. This system offers a simple non-expensive method to classify B. anthracis strains in lab

Immune and inflammatory radiogenomics of radiotherapy-induced normal-tissue toxicity: genetic susceptibility, mechanisms, risk prediction, and clinical translation.

Radiotherapy is indispensable for cancer control, yet acute and late normal-tissue toxicities remain major limits to treatment intensity and survivorship. Considerable interindividual variation persists after clinical and dosimetric factors are considered, motivating radiogenomic studies of inherited susceptibility. This review compares common and rare germline variation, association and sequencing designs, polygenic risk scores, and functional evidence through an immunological framework. Radiation-induced DNA damage and organelle stress release danger-associated signals and cytosolic DNA that

A pilot qualitative study of patient understanding and perceptions of genetic counselors and cascade testing in the context of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis.

Genetics-informed care is becoming increasingly important in the management of cardiomyopathy (CM). Despite current guidelines recommending genetic testing and counselors, these services are vastly underutilized. To our knowledge, this is the first qualitative study to examine patient perspectives (n = 10) on genetic counselors and cascade testing in the context of cardiovascular care in transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR), with the goal to inform implementation strategies for integrating genetic services. Codebook thematic analysis of semistructured interviews was conducted with adult patients d
