Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare but aggressive malignancy. Recent studies have discovered a pivotal role of the intratumoral microbiota in various cancers, yet it remains elusive in ACC. Here, we explored the intratumoral microbiome data derived from in silico identification, further validated in an in-house cohort by bacterial 16S rRNA fluorescence in situ hybridization and lipopolysaccharide staining. Unsupervised clustering determined two naturally distinct clusters of the intratumoral microbiome in ACC, which was associated with overall survival. The incorporation of microbial sig

The gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of the diarrhoeal disease cholera and is responsible for seven recorded pandemics. Several factors are postulated to have led to the decline of 6th pandemic classical strains and the rise of El Tor biotype V. cholerae, establishing the current 7th pandemic. We investigated the ability of classical V. cholerae of the 2nd and 6th pandemics to engage their type six secretion system (T6SS) in microbial competition against non-pandemic and 7th pandemic strains. We report that classical V. cholerae underwent sequential mutations in T

Infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria represent a therapeutic challenge both in clinical settings and in livestock production, but the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes among the species of bacteria that colonize the gastrointestinal tract of ruminants is not well characterized. Here, we investigate the resistome of 435 ruminal microbial genomes in silico and confirm representative phenotypes in vitro. We find a high abundance of genes encoding tetracycline resistance and evidence that the tet(W) gene is under positive selective pressure. Our findings reveal that tet(W) is

Mounting evidence has associated gut microbial composition and systemic metabolic profiles with Parkinson's disease (PD), yet causal pathways and molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We employed a systematic two-stage analytical framework integrating multiple Mendelian randomization (MR) approaches, transcriptome and epigenome-wide regulatory analyses, and colocalization analysis to genetically dissect the microbiota-host regulatory network implicated in PD susceptibility. Initially, two-sample MR was performed using gut microbiota data from the MiBioGen consortium, followed by an independent

AIM: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary, life-limiting, multi-system condition that results in chronic respiratory infections, pancreatic insufficiency and intestinal inflammation. Evidence indicates that CF patients develop colorectal cancer (CRC) earlier and more often than the general population. Intestinal dysbiosis resulting from genetics and CF treatment is a contributing factor. This systematic review aims to evaluate the literature to compare the microbiome of adult CF patients to non-CF patients and to assess if these changes correspond with known CRC microbiome alterations.

The pathogenesis of the two inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) phenotypes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) has remained elusive, thus frustrating attempts at defining a cure. IBD often presents as a complex inflammatory process wherein colon lesions (UC) or widespread ulceration and fissure (CD) might be accompanied by ancillary extra-intestinal manifestations involving the eye, skin, joints or liver, but also by full-blown "autoimmune" disorders from psoriasis and multiple sclerosis to rheumatoid arthritis; attempts at unraveling a link or a hierarchical order in these entitie

Introduction. Endometriosis affects 10-20% of reproductive-age women. Emerging evidence links the gut microbiota to endometriosis pathogenesis, but observational studies are limited by confounding, reverse causation and uncertainty about whether reported microbial signals represent reproducible aetiological associations.Hypothesis/Gap Statement. Whether genetically predicted gut microbial genera are associated with endometriosis risk remains unclear, and available observational evidence does not establish robust causal effects after accounting for multiple testing.Aim. This study aimed to expl

Predicting competition between antibiotic-susceptible wild-type (WT) and less susceptible mutant (MT) bacteria is valuable for understanding how drug concentrations influence the emergence of resistance. Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) models predicting the rate and extent of takeover of resistant bacteria during different antibiotic pressures can thus be a valuable tool in improving treatment regimens. The aim of this study was to evaluate a previously developed mechanism-based PK/PD model for its ability to predict in vitro mixed-population experiments with competition between Escher

Microbial communities are shaped by complex metabolic interactions, whereby the byproducts of one organism influence the physiology of others. This is exemplified in the microbial nitrogen cycle, where diffusion of free intermediates can drastically reshape the chemical landscape of the environment. One such intermediate, nitrous oxide (N2O), is often overlooked as biologically inert. However, emerging evidence suggests this gas may inhibit the activity of some cobalamin-dependent enzymes through a reaction with the cofactor. This raises the possibility that, through such an interaction, N2O-p

Joint disease, ankylosing enthesopathy (ANKENT) of the ankle, occurs naturally in mice. ANKENT depends on the genetical constitution, sex, and age, and its frequency varies among inbred strains of normal mice. We found the highest frequency of ANKENT in B10.BR (H-2k) males. The H-2k haplotype appears to be a relative risk factor, which increases the susceptibility to ANKENT. The aetiology of ANKENT is unknown but an involvement of microbial agents in the environment is supposed.

The gut microbiota is a dynamic community of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea that plays a pivotal role in regulating host immunity, metabolism, and systemic homeostasis. Dysbiosis, characterized by an imbalance in the microbial composition, is being increasingly recognized as a contributor not only to gastrointestinal cancers but also to extraintestinal malignancies. Mechanistic studies highlight the gut-microbiota-cancer axis, where microbial metabolites such as bile acids, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and tryptophan derivatives influence genetic, epigenetic, and immune pathways, in

The gut microbiota influences brain health through inflammatory and metabolic pathways that regulate neurological vulnerability rather than directly causing specific diseases. This framework positions altered microbial composition as one among many environmental factors that modulate brain resilience across aging and disease contexts. Chronic low-grade inflammation driven by compositional and functional changes in the gut microbiota, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and alterations in bacterial metabolites contributes to systemic immune activation, affecting blood-brain barrier integrity, micro

Resistance in pest species is no longer confined to classical genetic mechanisms or agricultural landscapes; instead, it emerges from a multilayered interplay of ecology, behavior, microbiomes, dispersal networks, and human-built environments. Across the manuscripts in this issue, a unifying picture emerges: urbanization and indoor environments act as powerful evolutionary arenas, shaping how pests invade, persist, and adapt to chemical, biological, and environmental pressures. Recent work on indoor pests, including cockroaches, bed bugs, and rodents, reveals how monitoring technologies, behav

The gut microbiome is increasingly recognized as a metabolically active regulator of host gene expression, translating environmental exposures-particularly diet-into epigenetic signals that shape development, immunity, metabolism, and disease susceptibility. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence for a microbiome-epigenome axis in which microbial metabolites and regulatory molecules modulate DNA methylation, histone modifications, non-coding RNA networks, RNA epitranscriptomic marks, and higher-order chromatin organization. Short-chain fatty acids act as histone deacetylase inhibit

Glyphosate is a widely used non-selective herbicide associated with ecological and human health concerns due to its environmental persistence, highlighting the need for effective remediation strategies. Among available approaches, microbial enzyme-mediated degradation represents a promising biological solution. This study aimed to enrich and characterize glyphosate-degrading microbial consortia from coffee plantation soils, validate glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) degradation by chromatographic analyses, and integrate genome-based functional annotation with comparative structu
