[Medical genetic study of the population of Turkmenia. III. Hereditary pathology in Turkmen Nokhurlis].

Medical-genetic investigations were carried out in isolated population of Nokhurlis inhabiting some villages of Ashkhabad and Krasnovodsk provinces. A high coefficient of inbreeding, high endogamy, and low coefficients of migration were found for this population. Two hereditary disorders are relatively frequent among the Nokhurlis and lacking in neighboring populations. The frequency of the autosomal dominant gene for congenital cataract is 0.26% and that of the autosomal recessive gene for a peculiar form of obesity is 2.47%. In both cases, the main factor affecting gene accumulation appears

Genetic polymorphisms and hypertension in Indian populations: a systematic review and integrative bioinformatics approach.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension continues to be a major public health issue in India, with increasing incidence associated with both lifestyle factors and genetic susceptibility. Despite genome-wide association studies identifying several loci related with blood pressure worldwide, there is a paucity of integration of these findings within the genetically varied Indian setting. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to compile current information on single-nucleotide polymorphisms linked to hypertension in Indian communities and to elucidate their biological significance by bioinformatics analysis.

Urbanisation Leaves a Genetic Signature but No Detectable Demographic Effects in a Small Mammal Population.

Urbanisation influences ecological and evolutionary processes, including gene flow and survival. Understanding how genetic and demographic rates respond to urbanisation is therefore essential for predicting and managing wildlife viability in human-dominated landscapes. We tested whether population genetic diversity, genetic structure, and apparent survival of Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) vary in concert along an urbanisation gradient. We combined a multi-year capture-mark-recapture study with microsatellite-based population genetic analyses at three sites in Berlin, Germany, repre

Population Genetic Data for 23 STR Loci of the Pech Ethnic Group in Honduras.

Background: The Pech ethnic group, comprising approximately 6024 individuals in northeastern Honduras, represents one of the country's smallest indigenous communities with a rich cultural heritage extending to pre-Columbian times. Despite their historical significance, no population genetic studies have been conducted on this group, and population-specific databases are essential for accurate forensic applications. Methods: Allele frequencies for 23 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci were determined in 100 unrelated Pech individuals (58 females, 42 males) from communities in the departme

Genetic rescue stabilizes diversity in small isolated populations of Bonneville cutthroat trout.

Genetic diversity loss due to anthropogenic factors is occurring rapidly on a global scale, putting many species at risk of extirpation and extinction. Different management strategies have been developed to slow this loss; however, it is often unknown whether these strategies reach their intended goals. In this study, we evaluate population structure and changes in nucleotide diversity (π) in isolated populations of Bonneville cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii utah) from the Snake Range (Nevada, USA). Starting in the 1990s, three of these populations were used to reestablish populations in

Genomic Investigations Unveil the Genetic Underpinnings of Environmental Adaptation in African Goat Populations.

In the expansive African region, goats display a diverse array of breeds that have evolved over time to adapt to varying local climates and environments. This study involved the analysis of 1591 samples, including 63 domestic breeds and 164 individuals from wild related species, focusing on genetic diversity, population structure, gene flow, selective signals, and landscape genomics. Our findings revealed lower genetic diversity in wild related species, particularly in the mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus). Gene flow was observed between wild Yura goats and North African populations. Introgr

DiscoDivas: Leveraging genetic-ancestry continuum information to interpolate PRS for admixed populations.

Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics for training and individual-level cohorts for fine-tuning are essential for constructing predictive polygenic risk score (PRS) models. However, the relatively low representation of admixed populations in both GWAS summary statistics and individual-level datasets hinders the development of PRSs and equitable clinical translation for admixed populations. Prior work indicates that the most informative PRS model for a genetically homogeneous sample varies linearly in an ancestry continuum space. Guided by these observations, we introduce a ge

Global genome-wide patterns of genetic diversity and population structure in Coryphaena hippurus.

The origin and maintenance of marine biodiversity remain poorly understood, particularly in highly connected oceanic environments where extensive dispersal is expected to limit population differentiation. Evolutionary processes driving population divergence or speciation frequently depend on a proper knowledge of species' life history and its interaction with major environmental variables. Using a genome-wide approach, we investigated the global population structure of the cosmopolitan pelagic fish Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758, generating a dataset of 8.7 million SNPs and complete mitoch

Genetic landscape and functional exploration of kidney cancer predisposition in cross-ancestral populations.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer, but its genetic architecture has not been fully characterized, particularly in Asian populations. Here, we perform a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of 33,712 RCC cases and 845,786 controls, including individuals of East Asian (5,313 cases and 96,912 controls), European (25,890 cases and 743,585 controls), African American (897 cases and 3,109 controls), and Latin American ancestry (1,612 cases and 2,180 controls), which unveils 10 novel RCC-associated loci and a Chinese-specific locus at 12p13.33. Genetic determinants of heart failure susceptibility and response in the collaborative cross mouse population.

Genetic variation and lived experiences shape how our hearts respond to chronic stress and development of heart failure, manifested as compromised pumping function and abnormal hemodynamics. The hallmark of heart failure etiology is excessive stress signals followed by maladaptive structural, electrical, and functional changes to the heart muscle, also known as cardiac remodeling. The specific genetic mechanisms which underly such phenomenon, however, are still unclear, due in part to difficulties in accounting for environmental effects in human population studies. To overcome this challenge,

Concurrent physiologic and gene-based genetic newborn hearing screening in a general population.

BACKGROUND: Physiologic newborn hearing screening (NBHS) has several weaknesses requiring improvement. Studies have explored variant-based genetic NBHS as a complement to physiologic NBHS. However, this genetic NBHS strategy has fundamental limitations that challenge logistics. METHODS: Given findings that a small set of genes accounts for the majority of genetic etiologies of hearing loss (HL), we designed a gene-based genetic NBHS strategy that screens for genes instead of limited variants, targeting the coding regions of twelve HL-related genes and the aminoglycoside-induced HL risk gene MT

Genetic carrier frequency in genes involved in inborn errors of immunity in the lebanese population.

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) represent a heterogenous group of around 550 genetic disorders impairing the development and/or function of the immune system. Affected patients typically present with recurrent and/or opportunistic infections, often co-occurring with additional manifestations such as autoimmunity, atopy, and malignancy. Despite major advances in the field, IEI remain overlooked, particularly in underrepresented populations. In Lebanon, the burden of autosomal recessive diseases including IEI is significant due to consanguinity, yet poorly characterized. This study assesses the

Large-scale genetic characterization of Parkinson's disease in the African and African admixed populations.

Elucidating the genetic contributions to Parkinson's disease aetiology across diverse ancestries is a critical priority for the development of targeted therapies in a global context. We conducted the largest sequencing characterization of potentially disease-causing, protein-altering and splicing mutations in 710 cases and 11 827 controls from genetically predicted African or African admixed ancestries. We explored copy number variants (CNVs) and runs of homozygosity in prioritized early onset and familial cases. Our study identified rare GBA1 coding variants to be the most frequent mutations

Genomic analysis of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto: genetic diversity and population structure.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis, caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (ss), is a globally distributed, zoonotic disease that is recognised by WHO as a neglected tropical disease. Despite its clinical and economic importance, nuclear genomic variation in this parasite has not been systematically characterised across global populations. In this study, we aimed to characterise the genome-wide nuclear genetic diversity and population structure of E granulosus ss across globally distributed populations. METHODS: We conducted a genomic study of 137 E granulosus ss samples

Genetic Research on Cardiac Channelopathies in African and African-Descent Populations: A Scoping Review.

Cardiac channelopathies are inherited arrhythmias that can lead to sudden cardiac death. Despite Africa's extensive genomic diversity, African and African-descent populations remain underrepresented in genetic research, creating gaps in variant interpretation and clinical care. This scoping review aims to map the extent, range, and nature of genetic research on cardiac channelopathies in these populations and to identify key geographic, thematic, and methodological gaps. Using the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology and the Population-Concept-Context framework, systematic search

Genetic analysis of body condition score in the Israeli Holstein dairy cattle population.

The objectives of the current study were to estimate genetic parameters of BCS as a function of lactation stage to investigate the genetic relationship between BCS, metabolic disease traits, and other traits under selection in Israel, as well as to consider the consequence of inclusion of some measure of BCS in the Israeli breeding index. The basic dataset included records on 236,350 Israeli Holstein cows with at least 1 BCS record during first parity. Heritabilities in parities 1 to 3 for BCS near calving, peak milk production, and drying-off ranged from 0.27 to 0.36 and were highest for seco

Potential vertical transmission of genetically diverse Trypanosoma cruzi in natural rodent populations.

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, has been detected in mammalian hosts occupying densely populated urban environments. This suggests that the risk of transmission to humans is higher than prevailing estimates, which largely reflect conditions in rural and peri-urban areas. Understanding the risks posed by T. cruzi thus requires further study of transmission pathways in part because triatomines - the primary vectors for T. cruzi - appear to be uncommon or absent in urban landscapes. Here we test the hypothesis that vertical transmission contributes to the pre
