Tularaemia, a zoonosis of veterinary and public health importance, commonly occurs in the Czech Republic as well as other countries of Northern Hemisphere. The objective of this study was to analyse the environmental conditions of distribution of natural foci of tularaemia and their long-term persistence in the Czech Republic. A geographic information system has been used for this purpose. A new variable (chi(t)), the mean number of natural foci in a specific area, has been suggested for the evaluation of diseases occurring in natural foci. Comparing two 15-year periods, a close correlation be

Extreme weather poses serious challenges to wildlife, often forcing animals to alter their behaviour with potential population-level consequences. Following contemporary climate change, the number and intensity of Arctic storms are increasing, but the responses of Arctic species to wind speed and episodic storms are poorly documented. We aimed to quantify behavioural responses (i.e. changes in movement modes and habitat selection patterns) of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) to wind speed and to compare estimates from before, during and after storm to hurricane-level wind events (wind speeds ≥24.5

Gastrointestinal parasites, especially Ostertagia ostertagi - the stomach worm - are known to affect the health and productivity of cattle. This study investigates the level of O. ostertagi antibodies on Swedish dairy farms and aims to investigate differences in the parasitic exposure over 20 years. Bulk-tank milk (BTM) samples were taken from 509 farms across Sweden, and the results were analysed along a north-south gradient in relation to three main country regions. Antibody levels against the stomach worm were quantified using a standardised and validated enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (

This study assessed the interunit reliability of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and accelerometer-derived metrics during high-intensity shuttle run protocols. Thirty-three female football players completed three shuttle run protocols (2 × 20 m, 4 × 10 m, and 8 × 5 m). Two STATSports Apex Pro units (18 Hz GPS and 10 Hz Augmented GNSS; 100 Hz accelerometer) recorded accelerometer-derived (fatigue index [FI] and dynamic stress load [DSL]) and GNSS-derived (total distance, acceleration and deceleration counts, maximum speed, speed intensity and total metabolic power) metrics. Interunit

Performance optimization down to the small unit level in the military is critical to the success of the collective force during an operation. However, there remains a lack of objective, quantitative performance metrics to evaluate military-team performance during battle drill training. Our research identified multiple wearable-derived measures that could predict squad performance as aligned to specific battle drill performance constructs. We developed linear mixed-effects models for three critical performance constructs: 1) Communications, 2) Fire Effectiveness, and 3) Violence of Action. In t

This study examined the frequency of the most demanding scenarios (MDS) during official soccer matches using rolling averages over 1, 5, and 10 min. Forty-two Under-19 players from different positions (central defenders, full-backs, central midfielders, wide midfielders, offensive midfielders, and forwards) were monitored across 27 matches using GPS to track distance covered, high-speed running, sprint distance, accelerations, and decelerations. Intensity thresholds were established based on percentiles (0-25, 25-50, 50-75, 75-100, and ≥100). The main findings suggest that: (i) Peak Demands oc

BACKGROUND: The spread of vector-borne infectious diseases is determined, among other things, by temperature. Thus, climate change will have an influence on their global distribution. In the future, Europe will approach the temperature optimum for the transmission of ZIKV and CHIKV. Climate scenarios and climate models can be used to depict future climatic changes and to draw conclusions about future risk areas for vector-borne infectious diseases.
METHODS: Based on the RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 climate scenarios, a geospatial analysis was carried out for the future temperature suitability of ZIKV

In-depth studies have been conducted on the risk of exposure to air pollution in urban residents, but most of them are static studies based on the population of residential units. Ignoring the real environmental dynamics during daily activity and mobility of individual residents makes it difficult to accurately estimate the level of air pollution exposure among residents and determine populations at higher risk of exposure. This paper uses the example of the Wuhan metropolitan area, high-precision air pollution, and population spatio-temporal dynamic distribution data, and applies geographical

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by complex, heterogeneous symptomology, thus detection outside traditional clinical contexts is difficult. Fortunately, advances in mobile technology, passive sensing, and analytics offer promising avenues for research and development. The present study examined the ability to utilize Global Positioning System (GPS) data, derived passively from a smartphone across seven days, to detect PTSD diagnostic status among a cohort (N = 185) of high-risk, previously traumatized women. Using daily time spent away and maximum distance traveled from h

The unexpected Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa in 2014 involving the Zaire ebolavirus made clear that other regions outside Central Africa, its previously documented niche, were at risk of future epidemics. The complex transmission cycle and a lack of epidemiological data make mapping areas at risk of the disease challenging. We used a Geographic Information System-based multicriteria evaluation (GIS-MCE), a knowledge-based approach, to identify areas suitable for Ebola virus spillover to humans in regions of Guinea, Congo and Gabon where Ebola viruses already emerged. We identified enviro

Elimination of the intermediate snail host of Schistosoma is the most effective way to control schistosomiasis and the most important first step is to accurately identify the snail habitats. Due to the substantial resources required for traditional, manual snail-searching in the field, and potential risk of miss-classification of potential snail habitats by remote sensing, more convenient and precise methods are urgently needed. Snail data (N = 15,000) from two types of snail habitats (lake/marshland and hilly areas) in Anhui Province, a typical endemic area for schistosomiasis, were collected

The built environment (BE) has been viewed as an important determinant of health. Numerous studies have linked BE exposure, captured using a variety of methods, to diet quality and to area prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. First-generation studies defined the neighborhood BE as the area around the home. Second-generation studies turned from home-centric to person-centric BE measures, capturing an individual's movements in space and time. Those studies made effective uses of global positioning system tracking devices and mobile phones, sometimes coupled with accelerom

BACKGROUND: Robust household sampling, commonly applied for population-based investigations, requires sampling frames or household lists to minimize selection bias. We have applied Google Earth Pro satellite imagery to constitute structure-based sampling frames at sites in Pikine, Senegal; Pietermaritzburg, South Africa; and Wad-Medani, Sudan. Here we present our experiences in using this approach and findings from assessing its applicability by determining positional accuracy.
METHODS: Printouts of satellite imagery combined with Global Positioning System receivers were used to locate and to

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of mild vs. strongly pushed coach feedback on the physiological response, ratio of perceived exertion (RPE), and time-motion characteristics in soccer training with small-sided games (SSGs). Sixteen elite youth soccer players (aged 17.2 ± 0.7 years, V[Combining Dot Above]O2max 62.1 ± 3.8 ml·kg·min) played two 4 vs. 4 small-sided games each. In random order, the coach provided a mild, unobtrusive, or a strongly pushed feedback throughout the game. Physiological measurements included heart rate expressed in mean values and intensity zones, bl

The objective of this research was to identify environmental risk factors for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Colombia and map high-risk municipalities. The study area was the Colombian Andean region, comprising 715 rural and urban municipalities. We used 10 years of CL surveillance: 2000-2009. We used spatial-temporal analysis - conditional autoregressive Poisson random effects modelling - in a Bayesian framework to model the dependence of municipality-level incidence on land use, climate, elevation and population density. Bivariable spatial analysis identified rainforests, forests and second

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium, a parasitic cestode that affects humans and pigs, is the leading cause of preventable epilepsy in the developing world. T. solium eggs are released into the environment through the stool of humans infected with an adult intestinal tapeworm (a condition called taeniasis), and cause cysticercosis when ingested by pigs or other humans. A control strategy to intervene within high-risk foci in endemic communities has been proposed as an alternative to mass antihelminthic treatment. In this ring strategy, antihelminthic treatment is targeted to humans and pigs residing wit
