Low-grade gingival leiomyosarcoma in a child.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the oral cavity, a rare mesenchymal tumor exhibiting smooth-muscle differentiation, is extremely uncommon in childhood. The most frequent location of childhood LMS is the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the stomach. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of leiomyosarcoma affecting the gingival tissues and mandible of a 9-year-old girl with peculiar clinical, microscopic, and radiographic features. Clinical and radiographical examinations revealed a gingival growth affecting the primary mandibular right first molar with inflammatory features. The lesion was

Gingival involvement of oral lichen planus.

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is one of the most common oral mucosa disorders. OLP gingival involvement is very frequently observed and is characterized by a wide range of clinical appearance, symptomatology, and locations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence and clinical aspects of gingival lesions in a series of 213 patients affected by OLP. METHODS: We analyzed the prevalence and clinical aspects (location, morphology, and symptomatology) of the gingival lesions in a total of 213 clinically and histopathologically assessed patients affected by OLP. RESULTS: Ging

Gingival leishmaniasis in an HIV-negative patient.

Gingival leishmaniasis is unusual and is mainly observed in immunocompromised patients. We report a case involving the palate, uvula, and gingiva of an HIV-negative patient who was initially diagnosed as having paracoccidioidomycosis. The patient underwent a biopsy for parasite isolation and in situ histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The Leishmania spp. were detected in lesions of the uvula and gingiva. Despite the poor state of teeth, the gingival lesions were caused by American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL). The gingival lesions presented an intense inflammatory infiltrate permeated

Gingival infiltration in acute monoblastic leukaemia.

Acute myeloid leukaemias (AML) are aggressive haematopoietic neoplasms that, if untreated, can lead to death within days. Up to 40% of presenting patients show evidence of extramedullary involvement (EMI) at diagnosis. EMI is reportedly most prevalent in myelo-monoblastic and monoblastic subtypes of AML (M4 and M5 according to FAB classification) and can present as leukaemic infiltrates in many sites including gingival enlargement and mucosal and skin nodules. We report a case of a patient who presented with gingival enlargement secondary to leukaemic infiltration. This case shows the importan

Gingival angiosarcoma: histopathologic and immunohistochemical study.

Angiosarcomas of the head and neck are rare tumors, the intra-oral localization being considered exceptionally in the specialty literature. The diagnosis of this kind of tumor in gingival location is difficult, both to the rarity of this lesion at this site, and to the various histopathological aspects. We present the case of 70 years old male patient clinically diagnosed with tumor of the alveolar crest of mandible, which, histopathologically, associated areas of predominant vascular proliferation, with areas of carcinoma and sarcoma. Immunohistochemical, the tumor was investigated for antibo

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis - a case report.

A case of 4 a year old girl with the complaint of delayed eruption of teeth is presented. She had moderate to severe, diffuse gingival enlargement in the maxilla and mandible. No deciduous teeth had erupted even at the age of five years except for incisal edges of upper, and lower anterior teeth. The diagnosis was made based on clinical examination and after ruling out drug and family history. Surgical removal of the hyperplastic tissue was done under general anesthesia.

Connective tissue metabolism and gingival overgrowth.

Gingival overgrowth occurs mainly as a result of certain anti-seizure, immunosuppressive, or antihypertensive drug therapies. Excess gingival tissues impede oral function and are disfiguring. Effective oral hygiene is compromised in the presence of gingival overgrowth, and it is now recognized that this may have negative implications for the systemic health of affected patients. Recent studies indicate that cytokine balances are abnormal in drug-induced forms of gingival overgrowth. Data supporting molecular and cellular characteristics that distinguish different forms of gingival overgrowth a

The role of lipoid proteinosis in gingival hypertrophy.

Hyalinosis cutis et mucosae (lipoid proteinosis, Urbach-Wiethe disease) is a rare syndrome with autosomal recessive inheritance. The disease is characterized by diffuse deposition of a hyalinelike substance in the dermis, submucosal connective tissue, and various internal organs. In this study, the patient demonstrated classic signs and symptoms of lipoid proteinosis except for gingival infiltration. Gingival infiltration is still an unexplainable feature of this disease. In the context of this case, the diagnostic significance of the microscopic findings of the gingival tissues and the possib

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis. A case report.

Gingival fibromatosis is a progressive gingival enlargement caused by an over growth of the collagenous element of the gingival fibrous connective tissue. Pharmacologically induced, hereditary (familial) and idiopathic forms of gingival fibromatosis are recognized. This paper reports a case of idiopathic gingival fibromatosis in a 13 year old boy involving the right maxillary and mandibular arches who had also been treated 3 years back for a gingival enlargement involving the left maxillary and mandibular arches. The enlargement was quite sever and caused significant esthetic and functional pr

Gingival disease associated with a decorative crown.

Decorative crowns for the teeth have gained a resurgence of popularity among adolescents. Similar to other forms of body art found in the mouth, these trendy crowns may be associated with a variety of oral complications. This case report describes a localized form of necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, exacerbated by a cosmetic gold crown in a teenage girl. Healthier artistic options are discussed to replace this flashy dental fad.

Dental plaque-induced gingival diseases.

Gingival diseases are a diverse family of complex and distinct pathological entities found within the gingiva that are the result of a variety of etiologies. There are several clinical characteristics common to all gingival diseases and these features include clinical signs of inflammation, signs and symptoms that are confined to the gingiva, reversibility of the disease by removing the etiology, the presence of bacterial laden plaque to initiate and/or exacerbate the severity of the disease and a possible role as a precursor for attachment loss around teeth. Defining and classifying gingival

Non-plaque-induced gingival lesions.

The origin of gingival inflammation is occasionally different from that of routine plaque-associated gingivitis, and such non-plaque-associated types of gingivitis often present characteristic clinical features. Examples of such forms of gingivitis are specific bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Specific bacterial infections of gingiva may be due to Neisseria gonorrhea, Treponema pallidum, streptococci, and other organisms. The most important viral infections of gingiva are herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 and varicella-zoster virus. Fungal infections may be caused by several fungi, the…

Congenital gingival granular cell tumour.

Congenital gingival granular cell tumours are rare lesions which have only occasionally been reported in the UK. Clinical features are of a benign lesion which occurs almost exclusively in newborn, Caucasian females and the anterior maxilla is the commonest site. Treatment consists of local excision and is curative. The terminology concerning this condition has been rather confused because of uncertainty regarding the histogenesis of these tumours and the similar histological appearance to adults granular cell myoblastoma occurring at other intraoral sites. The exact histogenesis of these tumo

The effect of triclosan on mediators of gingival inflammation.

Triclosan (2,4,4',-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenylether) is a well-known and widely used nonionic antibacterial agent which has recently been introduced in toothpastes and mouthrinses. The efficacy of triclosan-containing toothpaste and mouthrinse to reduce both plaque and gingivitis in long-term clinical trials has been well documented. Until recently, it was generally assumed that triclosan's effect on gingival inflammation was due to its antimicrobial and anti-plaque effect. It has now become apparent that triclosan may have a direct anti-inflammatory effect on the gingival tissues. Several in…
