Factors affecting the bacteriology of deep neck infection: a retrospective study of 128 patients.

CONCLUSIONS: Broad-spectrum antibiotics are advocated for treating deep neck infection. Anaerobic coverage is necessary, especially in odontogenic cases. The presence of diabetes, infection of the parotid space and an obvious odontogenic source of infection can aid in determining the causative organisms. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the bacteriology in deep neck infections and identify the factors that influenced the causative pathogens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of 212 patients who were diagnosed as having deep neck infections at the National Taiwan University Hospital b

Low Voltage-Enhanced Mechano-Bactericidal Biopatch.

Mechano-bactericidal strategies represent a safe and sustainable method for preventing microbial contamination in the postantibiotic era. However, their effectiveness against Gram-positive bacteria (≤55%) is still limited due to the thick peptidoglycan layer in their cell walls. Herein, an intelligent biomimetic nanopillared biopatch is developed. It is assisted by low-voltage (8 V) electrical stimulation from TENG and significantly enhances antibacterial efficacy (>99%) against three types of stubborn Gram-positive bacteria. These collaborative antibacterial behaviors are solely based on pure…

Actinomyces and Alimentary Tract Diseases: A Review of Its Biological Functions and Pathology.

Actinomyces are nonmotile, filamentous, Gram-positive bacteria that cause actinomycosis in immunodeficiency patients. Although the prognosis of actinomycosis is good, the diagnosis of actinomycosis is quite difficult. Recent studies on actinomycosis have shown that Actinomyces play an important role in various biological and clinical processes, such as the formation of dental plaque and the degradation of organics in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, the distribution of Actinomyces in the digestive tract, and different biological effects of actinomycosis, and its clinical association with infl…

In-vitro activity of temafloxacin for gram-positive pathogens.

The antimicrobial activity of temafloxacin against aerobic Gram-positive cocci was compared to that of ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, fleroxacin and pefloxacin using the broth microdilution technique. Temafloxacin was more active than the other four fluoroquinolones, particularly for viridans streptococci and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The MIC90 of temafloxacin was at least four-fold lower than that of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin for viridans streptococci and penicillin-susceptible pneumococci. The MIC50s and MIC90s of temafloxacin were equal to or lower than those of the other fluoroquinolones for

Grouping of some clinically relevant gram-positive rods by automated fatty acid analysis. Diagnostic implications.

One hundred and ninety-four strains of aerobically growing Gram-positive rods of the genera Corynebacterium, Actinomyces, Arcanobacterium, Erysipelothrix, Listeria, Oerskovia, Nocardia, Rhodococcus, and of unnamed Center for Disease Control (CDC) groups were checked for cellular fatty acid profiles with the microbial Identification System (Microbial ID, Newark, Del., USA). In order to obtain unified data usable for the clinical laboratory, 24 or 48 h sheep blood agar cultures were used. It was thought that grouping and perhaps identification could be aided by this approach. With the aid of num
