Head start programmes are ex-situ conservation procedures consisting of the captive rearing of sea turtle hatchlings for several months in order to avoid high mortality rates in the first year of life. Studies of the diseases of hatchling and post-hatchling turtles belonging to these programmes are scarce. We describe the gross and histological lesions found in 78 post-hatchling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that died during captive rearing in the conservation programme of the Cape Verde-Canary Islands, initiated with 113 hatchlings. The main organ systems affected were respiratory

We aimed to investigate the predictors for limb loss among patients with diabetes who have complicated skin/soft-tissue infections. In this observational study, consecutive patients with diabetic foot infection (DFI) from 17 centres in Turkey, between May 2011 and May 2013 were included. The Turkish DFI Working Group performed the study. Predictors of limb loss were investigated by multivariate analysis. In total, 455 patients with DFI were included. Median age was 61 years, 68% were male, 65% of the patients were hospitalized, 52% of the patients had used antibiotics within the last month, an

Tigecycline (TIG) is approved for use for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, as well as pneumonia. Acquired resistance or reduced susceptibility to TIG has been observed in Gram-negative rods, has seldom been reported in Gram-positive organisms, and has not yet been reported in Enterococcus faecium. Using the serial passage method, in vitro mutant AusTig and in vitro mutants HMtig1 and HMtig2 with decreased TIG susceptibility (MICs, 0.25 μg/ml) were obtained from strains E. faecium Aus0004 and HM1070 (MICs, 0.03 μg/ml), respectively. BACKGROUND: Serial transverse enteroplasty (STEP) lengthens and tapers dilated small bowel in patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS). Previous reports document encouraging outcomes with regard to tolerance for enteral nutrition (EN) and complications appear related to the re-operative nature of many cases and to the presence of multiple staple lines. However, infectious complications following STEP have not been examined. Since infections, especially catheter-related blood stream infections (CRBSI), are considered detrimental in infants and children with SBS, we sought to define the frequenc

Infection caused by Schaalia cardiffensis, formerly Actinomyces cardiffensis, is uncommon, and its clinical characteristics remain largely unknown. This report presents a case of S. cardiffensis infection causing critical illness in an elderly patient, along with a literature review. An 82-year-old Japanese man presented with septicemia caused by gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria, as well as pulmonary involvement representing septic embolisms, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. S. cardiffensis was identified in the anaerobic blood culture samples through 16S rRNA sequencing and databa

This report describes the case of a 41-year-old male patient complaining of a hacking cough. The patient was treated with a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor for psoriasis. Blood tests revealed mild lymphopenia and high levels of serum cryptococcal antigen. Chest computed tomography revealed infection in the lower lobe of the left lung. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid revealed Tropheryma whipplei. Tropheryma whipplei and Cryptococcus antimicrobial therapies were sequentially administered. During follow-up, the patient showed clinical and radiographic improveme

An 8-y-old, castrated male Siberian Husky dog was admitted to an emergency clinic with acute collapse and severe swelling of both forelimbs, ventral thorax, and axillary region. The clinical assessment, with laboratory tests and radiologic investigation, confirmed severe subcutaneous emphysema and multi-organ failure. The animal died while receiving emergency treatment. On postmortem examination, Clostridium perfringens was isolated from the subcutaneous fluid and the effusion from the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Relevant histopathology findings included subcutaneous emphysema and multi-o

BACKGROUND: Bacillus cereus is a gram-positive rod bacterium that is responsible for food poisoning. It is naturally widely distributed, and thus often contaminates cultures. Although it is rarely considered responsible, it can cause serious infections under certain conditions. However, lethal infections, especially in immunocompetent patients, are rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 60-year-old man developed community-acquired B. cereus pneumonia and alveolar hemorrhage unveiled by abrupt chest pain and hemoptysis with no other advance symptoms. B. cereus induced silent alveolar destruction w

Clostridium sordellii (C. sordellii) is an anaerobic gram-positive rod most commonly found in the soil and sewage but also as part of the normal flora of the gastrointestinal tract and vagina of a small percentage of healthy individuals. C. sordellii infection is considered to result from childbirth, abortion, and/or gynecological procedures. Although many strains of C. sordellii are nonpathogenic, virulent toxin-producing strains exist. Infection with this organism typically manifests as a patient experiencing septic shock rapidly followed by end-organ failure. Identification of C. sordelli h

Clostridium tertium has been increasingly reported as a human pathogen. This organism is an aerotolerant Gram-positive rod that is often mistaken for other organisms, such as Lactobacillus or Bacillus species. We describe a case of a patient with a history of intravenous drug use presenting to UCLA-Olive View Medical Center with gas gangrene of both upper extremities. The organism was initially misidentified as a Lactobacillus species on aerobic culture plates. However, terminal spore formation was detected in this isolate on a sub-cultured anaerobic culture plate and this isolate was confirme

Whipple's disease (WD) is a chronic multisystemic infection, caused by Tropheryma whipplei, a Gram-positive rod. Recently, a reliable method has been developed for cultivating T. whipplei in vitro. This together with the availability of complete genome sequence of T. whipplei prompted us to initiate proteome analysis of T. whipplei. The objective of the present study was to identify candidate proteins for serological diagnosis of WD. Immunoreactivities of sera collected from 18 patients with WD were compared with those of 24 control subjects who did not have WD. For this, we used 2-DE, immunob

A new aerobic gram-positive non-sporeforming bacillus has been isolated from infected genital hair of patients with white piedra in association with Trichosporon beigelii. This species has been characterised morphologically, nutritionally, by DNA base composition, cell-wall analysis and cellular fatty-acid profile on the basis of 14 isolates. The G+C content of DNA is 63.05 mol%. Cell walls possess meso-diaminopimelic acid (Type IV) and the sugars glucose, galactose, xylose and ribose; mycolic acids are not present. The species has a distinct colonial and microscopic morphology, is strongly pr

The bacterial cell wall is primarily composed of peptidoglycan (PG), a polymer essential for its protective envelope function, and any defect in its synthesis or repair can potentially result in bacterial lysis. Class A Penicillin-Binding Proteins (aPBPs) and Shape, Elongation, Division, and Sporulation (SEDS) proteins are PG polymerases acting in concert to ensure bacterial cell wall growth. Here, we identify the first regulator of the SEDS protein RodA in the Gram-positive model bacterium Bacillus subtilis. In the presence of the antibiotic moenomycin, which specifically inhibits glycosyltra

Infant botulism is a rare but life-threatening neuroparalytic syndrome caused by intestinal colonisation of Clostridium botulinum resulting in a symmetrical descending flaccid paralysis. This gram-positive, rod-shaped anaerobic bacillus is universally found in soil with previous links to ingestion of honey and dust contaminated with C. botulinum spores. We present a case of a baby boy with this rare condition eventually linked to dust on a rural outback property. This young patient was ventilated for 90 days. Initial serology for botulism toxin was negative, although C. botulinum spores were e

Pretransplant mortality rates in the US remain high and are connected to effective organ donation and utilization. Thus, there is a need to maximize the utilization of available donors. In some cases, this has been safely achieved using organs from donors with infectious complications. For example, several studies describe the use of organs from donors with bacterial meningitis due to pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenza, and Escherichia coli, with good outcomes. Listeria is an aerobic and facultatively anaerobic, nonspore-forming, Gram-posi

Strains of a Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped and immotile bacterium were isolated from broiler chicken caecal content. The isolates required strict anaerobic conditions for growth, formed spores, were catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. They produced butyrate as the major metabolic end product in reinforced clostridial medium broth. The genomic DNA G+C content of the isolated strains was 32.5-34.6 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0 FAME, C14 : 0 FAME, C19 : 0CYC 9,10DMA and C16 : 0DMA. The fatty acid composition of the cell wall showed no similarity to any strain in the midi

Clostridium sordellii is a spore-forming anaerobic Gram-positive rod that has rarely been reported to cause disease in humans. Resultant mortality from infection is estimated at nearly 70% and is most often correlated with gynaecological procedures, intravenous drug abuse or trauma. C. sordellii infection often presents similarly to toxic shock syndrome (TSS); notable features of infection include refractory hypotension, haemoconcentration and marked leucocytosis. Although clinically similar to TSS, a notable difference is C. sordellii infections rarely involve fever. The organism's major toxi

Bacillus anthracis, the agent of anthrax, is a nonmotile, aerobic gram-positive rod that can form very resistant spores in economically poor environments. Anthrax can manifest as cutaneous, gastrointestinal, or inhalational form. Cutaneous anthrax, caused by direct skin contact, presents with eschar, lymphadenopathy, and a febrile illness. The face and eyelids are most commonly involved in cutaneous anthrax. A 45-year-old man was admitted to our clinic with high fever and swelling of the right eyelid.
