A community-academic partnership to develop an implementation support package for overdose prevention in permanent supportive housing.

INTRODUCTION: The overdose crisis in the U.S. disproportionately impacts people experiencing homelessness. Permanent supportive housing (PSH) - permanent, affordable housing with voluntary support services - is an effective, evidence-based intervention to address homelessness. However, overdose risk remains high even after entering PSH for individual and structural reasons. In this study, we aimed to refine a set of evidence-based overdose prevention practices (EBPs) and an associated implementation support package for PSH settings using focus groups with PSH tenants, frontline staff, and lead

Beliefs and Perceptions of Physical Activity Among Black Adolescents in South Florida: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, non-Hispanic Black adolescents have a significantly higher prevalence of obesity than their peers. Though physical activity (PA) has many benefits, many adolescents fail to engage in adequate amounts of PA. Black adolescents are also more sedentary than those from other races and ethnicities. This study aimed to describe the perceptions, beliefs, and barriers to PA in South Florida Black adolescents. METHODS: Five focus groups were conducted with self-identified non-Hispanic Black adolescents (n = 38) in South Florida. A semi-structured question guide based

Understanding men's psychological reactions and experience following a cardiac event: a qualitative study from the MindTheHeart project.

OBJECTIVES: Emotional issues such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are common following a cardiac event. Despite their high prevalence, they often go undiagnosed and research suggests that men in particular are at higher risk. Therefore, a better understanding of men's experiences with a cardiac event and ensuing health services is key for adapting approaches that meet their needs. The aim of this study was to describe the self-reported emotional challenges that men face following a cardiac event and to understand their patterns of psychosocial adjustment. DESIGN: Qua

The AWAKEN survey: knowledge of narcolepsy among physicians and the general population.

Narcolepsy can be a debilitating sleep disorder resulting from the dysregulation of pathways that control the sleep and wake states of patients. Although overall knowledge of narcolepsy has increased, no previous studies characterize awareness and perceptions of this condition in the general population or among physicians. Our survey evaluated the understanding and perceptions of narcolepsy among individuals from the general population and from a sample of physicians, including sleep specialists. The Awareness and Knowledge of Narcolepsy (AWAKEN) survey included a sample of 1000 US adults, 300

Evidence-based psychosocial treatments for phobic and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents.

The article reviews psychosocial treatments for phobic and anxiety disorders in youth. Using criteria from Nathan and Gorman (2002), 32 studies are evaluated along a continuum of methodological rigor. In addition, the treatments evaluated in each of the 32 studies are classified according to Chambless et al.'s (1996) and Chambless and Hollon's (1998) criteria. Findings from a series of meta-analyses of the studies that used waitlists also are reported. In accordance with Nathan and Gorman, the majority of the studies were either methodologically robust or fairly rigorous. In accordance with Ch

National evaluation of healthcare provider attitudes toward organ donation after cardiac death.

OBJECTIVE: Organ donation after cardiac death will save lives by increasing the number of transplantable organs. But many healthcare providers are reluctant to participate when the withdrawal of intensive care leads to organ donation. Prior surveys indicate ethical concerns as a barrier to the practice of organ donation after cardiac death, but the specific issues that characterize these concerns are unknown. We thus aimed to identify what barriers healthcare providers perceive. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative analysis of focus group transcripts to identify issues of broad importance. SET

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria as a marker for clonal myelopathy.

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is recognized as a clonal disorder manifested as increased sensitivity of marrow cells to complement. Case reports have associated this condition with leukemia, myelodysplasia, and myeloproliferative disorders. We identified 47 patients with PNH from 1976 to 1990. In 9 of the 47 patients, PNH was associated with another clonal myelopathy. Five patients had PNH and a myelodysplastic syndrome, and four had PNH and agnogenic myeloid metaplasia. PNH preceded the development of myelodysplastic syndrome but occurred after the development of agnogenic myeloid

A randomized matched-pairs study of feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of systems consultation: a novel implementation strategy for adopting clinical guidelines for Opioid prescribing in primary care.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports on the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of an innovative implementation strategy named "systems consultation" aimed at improving adherence to clinical guidelines for opioid prescribing in primary care. While clinical guidelines for opioid prescribing have been developed, they have not been widely implemented, even as opioid abuse reaches epidemic levels. METHODS: We tested a blended implementation strategy consisting of several discrete implementation strategies, including audit and feedback, academic detailing, and external facilitation. The study

Developing social interaction and understanding in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a groupwork intervention.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with social interaction and understanding lie at the heart of the communication disorder that characterises the autism spectrum. This study sought to improve social communication for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by means of a groupwork intervention focusing on social and emotional perspective-taking, conversation skills, and friendship skills. It also aimed to address some of the limitations of previous interventions, including a lack of generalisation to other settings, so as to maximise inclusion in the community. METHOD: A group of 46 high functi

Study of the performance of resident surgeon-in-training during distal fibula lateral plate placement according to 2 learning methods: naive practice versus deliberate practice.

INTRODUCTION: Historically, surgical training has been primarily carried out in the operating theatre, using mentoring for the surgical resident to reach the appropriate skill level (3/5). Other surgical training methods also improve performance, but do not always lead to the highest level of expertise (5/5). Another training method, sometimes termed- deliberate practice, by setting objectives based on feedback, may be more effective. In this study we compared resident learning of osteosynthesis for a fibular fracture model between deliberate practice and traditional teaching or naive practice
