Airway responsiveness to histamine aerosol and lung prostaglandin generation were investigated in normal, partially vitamin C deficient and scorbutic guinea pigs. Mammalian cells specifically internalize some molecular species through receptor-mediated endocytosis (RME). We have used four different experimental protocols to investigate whether ouabain enters cardiac cells of guinea pig atrium through this pathway. The ototoxic effect of Cis-platin on guinea pigs was assessed with frequency-specific brainstem audiometry in the frequency range 0.8-20 kHz. The animals had a noise-induced hearing loss in one ear before Cis-platin treatment. The loss of threshold showed a large inter-individual variability, with a rapid increase above a hypothetic threshold dose. We prospectively studied 20 Saudi and Yamani patients with calcified guinea worm who presented with different rheumatic manifestations. Localized myalgia (55%), chronic monoarthralgia (35%) and chronic synovitis of the knee (10%) were the main presentations. Two cases with synovial fluid eosinophilia were seen. In spite of the absence of active infestation, the clinical, laboratory and radiological findings suggested the possibility of a causal relationship. The condition should be considered among other causes of parasitic rheumatism particularly in endemic areas.

Fifty hospital patients in Port Moresby (mean age 30 yr) without evidence of malnutrition or gastro-intestinal disease, who came from many parts of Papua New Guinea (P.N.G.), were given 50 g lactose orally after an overnight fast. Sterol balance techniques have been used to determine the effect of short-term ascorbic acid (AA) deprivation on bile acid excretion in the guinea pig. The effects of a brief (2-week) AA deficiency on bile acid pool sizes and the activity of the rate controlling enzyme in bile acid biosynthesis have been determined.
