Human Joint Angle Estimation Using Deep Learning-Based Three-Dimensional Human Pose Estimation for Application in a Real Environment.

Human pose estimation (HPE) is a technique used in computer vision and artificial intelligence to detect and track human body parts and poses using images or videos. Widely used in augmented reality, animation, fitness applications, and surveillance, HPE methods that employ monocular cameras are highly versatile and applicable to standard videos and CCTV footage. These methods have evolved from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) pose estimation. However, in real-world environments, current 3D HPE methods trained on laboratory-based motion capture data encounter challenges, such as

Does Excessive Body Weight Change the Shape of the Spine in Children?

Background: Excessive body weight is a lifestyle issue, which is commonly found in children in many countries worldwide, and has enormous medical implications. This study aimed to determine the effect of overweight and obesity on the shape of the spine in children. Materials and Methods: A total of 910 children 10-12 years of age participated in this study. Their height, weight, and fat tissue content were measured. Their BMI was calculated, and their body weight status was categorized. The shape of the spinal curvature was assessed using an ultrasound Zebris Pointer system. The following para

While exercise is generally beneficial t … enstrual regularity only in athletes participating in specific sports (e.g., long-distance running, gymnastics) or those with low body mass index. In cases of amenorrhea, 93 (72.1%) performed β-hCG testing, 68 (52.7%) conducted hormonal assessments, and 43 of 126 (34.1%) never requested bone densitometry. Hormonal treatment was rarely prescribed, while 53 (4 …

Catastrophic neurologic injuries in sport.

Tens of millions of children and adults participate in organized sport in the United States each year. Although uncommon, fatal and severe nonfatal brain and spine injuries can occur during these activities. These "catastrophic" injuries have been noted in contact sports such as football, rugby, and ice hockey, as well as in noncontact sports including baseball, cheerleading, swimming and diving, equestrian, gymnastics, pole vault, rodeo, snow skiing, snowboarding, and wrestling. They happen at all levels of play, from youth to professional. Among all sports, football has the highest number of…

[Progressive Intracranial Hypertension due to Superior Sagittal Sinus Thrombosis Following Mild Head Trauma: A Case Report].

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis after mild head trauma without skull fracture or intracranial hematoma is exceptionally rare. We describe an unusual case of progressive intracranial hypertension due to superior sagittal sinus thrombosis following mild head trauma. A 17-year-old boy presented with nape pain a day after a head blow during a gymnastics competition (backward double somersault). On admission, he showed no neurological deficit. CT scans revealed no skull fractures, and there were no abnormalities in the brain parenchyma. However, his headache worsened day-by-day and he had begun to…

Posttraumatic locked-in syndrome with an unusual three day delay in the appearance.

We report a rare case of posttraumatic locked-in syndrome (LIS) that appeared after an unusual three day delay. LIS was diagnosed according to clinical status and diagnostic methods (roentgenograms, computerized tomography, transcranial Doppler, electroencephalography, magnetic resonance imaging). A fourteen-year-old girl had a cervical spine injury during floor exercises that provoked LIS 72 hours after trauma. A rapid diagnosis of basilar thrombosis followed by antioedema and continuous anticoagulant therapy significantly improved the neurological status. In conclusion, posttraumatic locked-

Elbow joint loading and spatiotemporal performance under different hand positions during the forward handspring.

This study examined how different hand positions influence key biomechanical characteristics of elbow joint loading and performance during the forward handspring. Nine adolescent male gymnasts performed five trials using parallel (PHP) and outward (OHP) hand positions. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected using eight infrared cameras (250 Hz) and two force plates (1,000 Hz), with analysis conducted on the arm in contact with the force plate. The OHP produced greater maximum vertical and resultant ground reaction forces and net vertical impulse than the PHP, while exhibiting a shorter cont

Physeal stress injury in youth athletes: upper extremity imaging findings.

Sports participation among children predisposes the immature skeleton to unique patterns of injury. In contrast to the mature skeleton, the growth plates of the immature skeleton are biomechanically vulnerable sites of weakness, susceptible to not only acute traumatic but also repetitive overuse injuries. This latter pattern of injury, better known as physeal stress injuries (PSIs), has received increased attention, because undiagnosed and untreated injuries can result in long-term morbidity and risk for future growth disturbance, particularly when involving the physis underlying the epiphysis

Gait Flexibility among Older Persons Significantly More Impaired in Fallers Than Non-Fallers-A Longitudinal Study.

Gait disorders are a relevant factor for falls and possible to measure with wearable devices. If a wearable sensor can detect differences in gait parameters between fallers and non-fallers has not yet been studied. The aim of this study was to measure and compare gait parameters, vestibular function, and balance performance between fallers and non-fallers among a group of older persons. Participants were senior members (n = 101) of a Swedish non-profit gymnastic association. Gait parameters were obtained using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) that the participants wore on the leg while walki

Effect of Exercise-Related Factors on the Perception of Time.

The concept of time whether considered through the lenses of physics or physiology is a relative measure. Alterations in time perception can have serious implications in sport, fitness and work. Accurate perception of time is an important skill with many time constrained sports (i.e., basketball, North American football, tennis, gymnastics, figure skating, ice hockey, and others), and work environments (i.e., workers who need to synchronize their actions such as police and military). In addition, time distortions may play a role in exercise adherence. Individuals may be disinclined to continue…

Elite athletes and pubertal delay.

Intensive physical training and participation in competitive sports during childhood and early adolescence may affect athletes' pubertal development. On the other hand, pubertal timing, early or late, may impact on an athlete selection for a particular sport. Genetic predisposition, training load, nutritional status and psychological stress determine athletes' pubertal timing. Athletes that practice esthetic sports, especially gymnasts, are predisposed to a delay in pubertal development. The growing evidence indicates that energy deficiency, not a systemic training per se, plays a crucial role
