Hepatitis A virus and injecting drug misuse in Aberdeen, Scotland: a case-control study.

To describe an epidemiological investigation of an outbreak of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection among injecting drug users in Aberdeen, Scotland. A case-control study to determine whether transmission was facilitated by poor personal hygiene or through sharing injecting equipment. Cases were more likely to report not washing their hands after using the toilet [odds ratio (OR) = 12.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.58-105.89] or before preparing food (OR = 4.0, 95% CI = 1.01-15.8), and less likely to have washed their hands prior to preparing drugs (OR = 10.67, 95% CI = 2.14-53.07). Cases we

Contamination of hand wash detergent linked to occupationally acquired melioidosis.

Two mechanics working at a garage in tropical northern Australia simultaneously developed upper limb melioidosis ulcers. Both patients had Burkholderia pseudomallei of identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) type (Spe I). Environmental sampling identified B. pseudomallei in a container of commercial hand wash detergent as the likely source of infection, although there were multiple isolates of different PFGE types to the clinical isolates.

The relevance of associative learning pathways in the development of obsessive-compulsive washing.

The relevance of associative learning in the development of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) was investigated in a group of 23 OCD patients whose main concern was washing and 23 age and sex matched control subjects who did not have OCD. OC washers completed an origins instrument based on Menzies and Clarke's (1993, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 31, 355-365) Origins Questionnaire (OQ) for the phobic disorders. Control subjects completed a modified version of this measure designed to give a comprehensive picture of their experiences with relevant contamination-related stimuli. In general, t

Role of perceived danger in the mediation of obsessive-compulsive washing.

The role of danger expectancies in sub-clinical Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) was examined in 18 undergraduate students who had displayed washing/contamination concerns. The perceived level of danger in a Behavioural Avoidance Test (BAT) involving a compound stimulus of potting soil, animal hair, food scraps, and raw meat was manipulated by varying the instructions participants were given at the commencement of the BAT. Participants were randomly allocated into a high-danger instruction condition or a low-danger instruction condition. Participants in the higher-danger instruction conditi

[Noroviruses, these unknown worldwide epidemic enteropathogens].

Discovered in the 1970s, human noroviruses (NoV) are the leading cause of foodborne disease and gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. NoV affect people of all ages. In children less than 5 years old, despite rotavirus remains the main enteropathogen responsible for viral gastroenteritis, NoV become the first etiological virus in countries where the rotavirus vaccine was introduced. Treatment of viral gastroenteritis is symptomatic. The key element in front of NoV infection is limiting their transmission. A rapid NoV detection during outbreak is important in the aim to rapidly implement hygiene

Norovirus outbreaks on three college campuses - California, Michigan, and Wisconsin, 2008.

Noroviruses are the most common cause of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Norovirus outbreaks affect persons of all ages and occur in a wide variety of settings (e.g., nursing homes, hospitals, restaurants, communities, schools, day care centers, military barracks, and cruise ships). During fall 2008, three norovirus outbreaks occurring on college campuses in California, Michigan, and Wisconsin were reported to CDC. Public health investigations led by the respective state and local health departments were conducted to characterize the extent of the outbreaks and implement appropri

Enteric outbreaks in long-term care facilities and recommendations for prevention: a review.

Outbreaks of enteric illness in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) were reviewed to identify preventative recommendations. Systematic review methodology identified outbreak reports of gastrointestinal illness in LTCFs either published or that occurred from January 1997 to June 2007. The inclusion criteria captured 75 outbreaks; 23 (31%) associated with bacterial agents and 52 (69%) with viral agents. Transmission was mainly foodborne (52%) for those of bacterial origin and person-to-person (71%) for viral outbreaks. Norovirus infection was associated with 58% of hospitalizations. Sixty deaths w

An unusual hypopigmentation in occupational dermatology: presentation of a case and review of the literature.

Contact dermatitis to cooling lubricants is commonly encountered in occupational dermatology, but it rarely induces pigmentary skin changes. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between toxic leukoderma and postinflammatory hypopigmentation when examining a depigmentation. A differential diagnosis is described in the case of a 31-year-old metal worker, spending most of his time on a computer-numerically controlled machine, who presented with cumulative irritant hand dermatitis and secondary hypopigmentation. Patch tests gave negative reactions to the European standard series, the disinfe

Physiotherapy involves manifold measures that are partly not clearly separated from other methods of therapy. In most cases the skin or mucosa are not injured so that the danger of infectious complications is relatively low. On the other hand, patients with severe underlying diseases which are problematic from the aspect of hygiene in connection with infections, may have to be treated (for example, intensive-care patients, patients with decubital ulcers etc.) In such patients physiotherapy must comply with hygienic precautions that are employed with other diseases and treatments to prevent the

Effect of multiple alcohol-based hand rub applications on the tensile properties of thirteen brands of medical exam nitrile and latex gloves.

Current CDC guidance for the disinfection of gloved hands during the doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE) following the care of a patient with Ebola recommends for multiple applications of alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) on medical exam gloves. To evaluate possible effects of ABHR applications on glove integrity, thirteen brands of nitrile and latex medical exam gloves from five manufacturers and two different ABHRs were included in this study. A pair of gloves were worn by a test operator and the outside surfaces of the gloves were separately treated with an ABHR for 1-6 applications.

Treatment and control strategies for COVID-19: Prospects and possibilities.

COVID-19 is a highly contagious and infectious disease, spreading rapidly worldwide. Its high spread rate has turned it into public stigma. The current study is focusing on its treatment and control strategies on the basis of the facts and figs obtained from previous studies. Supplementation of infected person with minerals and vitamin would be very beneficial for faster recovery like in any other acute viral infection. Blood of a recovered person in any outbreak is very precious because it is containing high levels of neutralizing antibodies, memory T and B cells population. Both serum and bu

[Pandemic influenza: rapid sanitary-hygienic measures for initial containment of diffusion].

Viral respiratory diseases may be characterized by rapid diffusion in population, that often cause epidemic outbreaks or pandemic. Besides, typical high mutations of involved virus (almost always influenza virus) can reduce the validity of the up to date available vaccine. The achievement of new vaccines can require prolonged period. In addition, the availability and efficacy of antiviral drugs against new viruses should be evaluated before their uses. Influenza virus replication occurs in the epithelial cells of the respiratory system, and viruses, present in contaminated secretions, spread m

Controlling the Diffusion of Multidrug-Resistant Organisms in Intensive Care Units.

The prevalence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in intensive care units (ICUs) is increasing worldwide, with very large variations across countries, microorganisms, and settings. Emerging MDR gram-negative bacteria and fungi raise particular concerns that require improved prevention and control strategies. Vertical approaches are mainly based on screening and contact precautions and/or decolonization of MDRO carriers. On the other hand, horizontal strategies are not pathogen-specific and include standard precautions (i.e., hand hygiene), universal decolonization, antimicrobial stewards
