The maternal and newborn health eCohort to track longitudinal care quality: study protocol and survey development.

The MNH eCohort was developed to fill gaps in maternal and newborn health (MNH) care quality measurement. In this paper, we describe the survey development process, recruitment strategy, data collection procedures, survey content and plans for analysis of the data generated by the study. We also compare the survey content to that of existing multi-country tools on MNH care quality. The eCohort is a longitudinal mixed-mode (in-person and phone) survey that will recruit women in health facilities at their first antenatal care (ANC) visit. Women will be followed via phone survey until 10-12 weeks

Age-sensitive design of online health information: comparative usability study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults' health maintenance may be enhanced by having access to online health information. However, usability issues may prevent older adults from easily accessing such information. Prior research has shown that aging is associated with a unique pattern of cognitive changes, and knowledge of these changes may be used in the design of health websites for older adults. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the current study was to examine whether older adults use of a health information website was affected by an alternative information architecture and access interface (hierarchical versus t

Searching the Internet for drug-related web sites: analysis of online available information on ecstasy (MDMA).

Although the Internet is a growing source of information on MDMA/ecstasy, no studies so far have investigated the level and quality of ecstasy information available to the typical Web user. In the present study, 280 Web sites were identified and analyzed; 50.4% had an anti-drug approach, 16.2% a harm reduction approach, and 24.8% a pro-drug approach. MDMA pro-drug Web sites appeared significantly earlier in the search engines' results list than both anti-drug and harm reduction Web sites (F (3; 159) = 3.288; p = .022). This study represents the first systematic analysis of information availabl

Procurement process and shortages of essential medicines in public health facilities: A qualitative study from Nepal.

Ensuring access to essential medicines remains a formidable challenge in Nepal. The specific reasons for the shortage of essential medicines within Nepal have not been extensively investigated. This study addresses challenges associated with access to essential medicines, procurement process difficulties, and functionality of inventory management systems at different levels of public health facilities. Fifty-nine semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with health managers and service providers at provincial and local levels in six randomly selected districts of Bagmati province, Ne

Assessing One Health capacities for transboundary zoonotic diseases at the Libya-Tunisia border.

BACKGROUND: The dynamic nature of zoonotic emergence, spillover and spread necessitates multisectoral coordination beyond national borders to encompass cross-boundary and regional cooperation. Designated points of entry (POEs), specifically ground crossings, serve as critical locales for establishing and maintaining robust prevention, detection, notification, coordination, and response mechanisms to transboundary emerging and re-emerging disease threats. In order to better assess One Health capacities for transboundary zoonotic diseases (TZD) prevention, detection and response we adapted an ex

Building an Ontology for Identity Resolution in Healthcare and Public Health.

UNLABELLED: Integration of disparate information from electronic health records, clinical data warehouses, birth certificate registries and other public health information systems offers great potential for clinical care, public health practice, and research. Such integration, however, depends on correctly matching patient-specific records using demographic identifiers. Without standards for these identifiers, record linkage is complicated by issues of structural and semantic heterogeneity. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to develop and validate an ontology to: 1) identify components of ident…

Using the internet in patient-centred diabetes care for communication, education, and decision support.

The New England Journal of Medicine 329 (1993) 977- The present paper describes two systems for communication, education, and decision support in patient-centred diabetes care. Both systems are developed under the assumption that while the clinical resources in the health care sector are limited, patients' resources and new information technology may be able to play a much more central role. With DiasNet patients can experiment with their own data. They can, retrospectively, adjust insulin doses or meals sizes, and thereby learn how to cope with various situations. DiabVision, brings together

Bridging TG-116 and TG-232: A retrospective multi-vendor evaluation of deviation index re-centering and process control in digital radiography.

BACKGROUND: The deviation index (DI) is a vendor-neutral indicator of detector exposure relative to the configured target exposure index (TEI). Because TEI is a protocol value rather than a calibrated physical quantity, poorly aligned TEI settings can create systematic DI offsets, obscure protocol problems, and prevent meaningful statistical process control. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective multi-vendor study evaluated whether routine DICOM metadata can identify biased DI distributions, separate fixed TEI-setting offsets from protocol-adherence variation, estimate candidate TEI updates, and supp

Integrated IT Platform for Coordination of Diagnosis, Treatment, and Aftercare of Prosthetic Joint Infections.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Prosthetic joint infections (PJI) are difficult to diagnose and treat. For a correct diagnosis, an array of information has to be processed and weighted. Successful treatment depends on the diagnosis, timing, and surgical strategy paired with treatment of the infectious agent. The complexity and interdisciplinarity needed cause difficulties concerning decision-making, the communication between disciplines, and the execution of a treatment strategy. The aim of this study was to develop a software platform to enhance the collection of information for the diagnosis of PJI, the int

A ubiquitous method for street scale spatial data collection and analysis in challenging urban environments: mapping health risks using spatial video in Haiti.

BACKGROUND: Fine-scale and longitudinal geospatial analysis of health risks in challenging urban areas is often limited by the lack of other spatial layers even if case data are available. Underlying population counts, residential context, and associated causative factors such as standing water or trash locations are often missing unless collected through logistically difficult, and often expensive, surveys. The lack of spatial context also hinders the interpretation of results and designing intervention strategies structured around analytical insights. This paper offers a ubiquitous spatial d

National plan for reliable tuberculosis laboratory services using a systems approach. Recommendations from CDC and the Association of Public Health Laboratories Task Force on Tuberculosis Laboratory Services.

Since the mid-1990s, public health laboratories have improved tuberculosis (TB) test performance, which has contributed to the resumption of the decline in TB incidence in the United States. However, to eliminate TB in the United States, further improvements are needed in laboratory services to support TB treatment, prevention, and control. A critical step is the development of an integrated system that ensures prompt and reliable laboratory testing and flow of information among laboratorians, clinicians, and TB-control officials. Challenges to developing such a system include 1) establishing

Accurate health information is the best strategy against misinformation and disinformation: respiratory specialists are on the front line.

INTRODUCTION: Disinformation refers to false information deliberately shared with the intent to cause harm. Disinformation is escalating because health is a global concern and tends to elicit strong emotional responses. Misinformation refers to false information shared without malicious intent. AREAS COVERED: Health-related misinformation and disinformation undermine prevention efforts, distort health behaviors, and erode trust in institutions and professionals. A French mission identified three vulnerabilities: low health literacy, difficulty in assessing the reliability of sources, and algo
