Meeting the emerging public health needs of persons with blood disorders.

In its decades-long history, the Division of Blood Disorders (DBD) at CDC has evolved from a patient-focused, services-supporting entity at inception, to one of the world leaders in the practice of public health to improve the lives of people at risk for or affected by nonmalignant blood disorders. The DBD's earliest public health activities consisted of working with care providers in a network of hemophilia treatment centers to provide AIDS risk reduction services to people with hemophilia. Because this infectious disease threat has been reduced over time as a result of the development of saf

History and Current Status of the HIV/AIDS Supporting Network System.

OBJECTIVES: We reviewed the development process, current structure, and core functions of the HIV/AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome) Supporting Network System (HASNet), which underpins the national surveillance system for HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Korea (ROK). We also analyzed the role of HASNet within the broader national infectious disease management framework. METHODS: We reviewed relevant literature and institutional developments to examine the stepwise evolution of HASNet from 2004 to 2024. Our analyses focused on system components (test management,

The Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Sentinel Surveillance System in South Korea: Retrospective Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: South Korea has implemented a hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) surveillance system since 2009 to monitor incidence trends and identify disease burden. This nationwide surveillance involves a network of approximately 100 pediatric clinics that report all probable and confirmed HFMD cases. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, infectious disease surveillance systems must be evaluated to ensure the effective use of limited public health resources. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the HFMD sentinel surveillance system in South Korea from 2017 to 2022, focusing on the transition

The Impact of Microplastics on Human Health: An Urgent Public Health Concern.

Microplastics (MPs) have rapidly become one of the most pervasive pollutants in the modern world. Far from being confined to oceans or waste sites, these tiny particles now circulate through the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. As everyday plastic items break down over time, they form microscopic fragments that can travel long distances and enter the human body through inhalation or ingestion. Once inside the body, these particles may accumulate in organs and interact with biological systems in ways that scientists are only beginning to understand. This review synthesiz

An introduction to North Carolina Integrated Care for Kids (NC InCK): A model to support whole-child health.

We describe the design of the North Carolina Integrated Care for Kids (NC InCK) model. NC InCK is one of seven nationwide CMMI-funded pediatric health care delivery models that integrate services to promote whole-child health. NC InCK was collaboratively designed by health care systems, the state Medicaid agency, Medicaid managed care organizations, child-serving organizations across multiple sectors, and families. The model uses three key approaches to integrate care: 1) a risk stratification algorithm using data across healthcare, education, and social systems to holistically understand need

The role of health systems in shaping vaccine decisions: Insights from Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

BACKGROUND: The demographic drivers of vaccine uptake and confidence have been well-documented in diverse contexts. However, the role of health systems in improving vaccine uptake and confidence has been less discussed particularly in the post-pandemic period. METHODS: Using nationally representative surveys of adults conducted between December 2022 and April 2023 in Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States (US), we examined demographic, health, and health system determinants of vaccine confidence and uptake of four vaccines for adult respondents or their children: COVID-

Imprisoned and imperiled: access to HIV and TB prevention and treatment, and denial of human rights, in Zambian prisons.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV and tuberculosis (TB) prevalence are high in prisons throughout sub-Saharan Africa, little research has been conducted on factors related to prevention, testing and treatment services. METHODS: To better understand the relationship between prison conditions, the criminal justice system, and HIV and TB in Zambian prisons, we conducted a mixed-method study, including: facility assessments and in-depth interviews with 246 prisoners and 30 prison officers at six Zambian prisons; a review of Zambian legislation and policy governing prisons and the criminal justice system;

Which factors mediate the effect of childhood socioeconomic disadvantage on mental health in young adulthood? A protocol for a target trial emulation using linked administrative data from New South Wales, Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life socioeconomic status (SES) increases the risk of poor mental health outcomes in adulthood. However, the mechanistic pathways underlying this relationship remain poorly understood. While addressing socioeconomic inequalities remains a long-term goal, identifying specific mediating pathways could reveal more immediate opportunities for effective interventions. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Using linked administrative data from New South Wales, Australia (1990-2022), we will emulate a target trial examining the relationship between SES at birth and acute mental health admissions

"I was lucky": Exploring the healthcare experiences of trans and non-binary youth in Alberta.

BACKGROUND: Canadian healthcare is publicly funded, with the roles and responsibilities within the health care system divided between the federal, provincial and territorial governments. Provinces and territories have most of the responsibility for delivering health and other social services. There is a paucity of research exploring the specific health care experiences of transgender and non-binary youth in the province of Alberta. AIMS: This study investigates the healthcare experiences of transgender and non-binary (TNB) youth (ages 14-25) in Alberta. The research within this paper highligh

A qualitative examination of the distribution strategies, access, and equitable uptake of the COVID-19 vaccines in Kenya: lessons for the next pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The WHO and international partners identified vaccination against the coronavirus as one of the important public health interventions in controlling Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) infections. The COVID-19 vaccine uptake was however low and characterized by inequitable distribution and access in Kenya. This study aimed to examine in depth the causes of inequity in vaccine uptake to inform the future rollout and successful uptake of new vaccines. METHODS: The study employed a qualitative approach involving in-depth key informant interviews with stakeholders across various aspects o

Simulating crisis triage: a methodological framework for evaluating ventilator allocation under crisis standards of care.

BACKGROUND: Crisis Standards of Care (CSC) may require rationing of life-sustaining resources, such as mechanical ventilation, during public health emergencies. Simulation modeling offers a scalable, transparent method to evaluate triage frameworks before implementation. While ventilator triage frameworks vary in their use of exclusion criteria, comorbidity adjustments, and reassessment frequency, few have been rigorously compared using real-world data under realistic surge conditions. Robust platforms that simulate both front-end (initiation) and back-end (reassessment or reallocation) triage

Influenza vaccination strategies for 2020-21 in the context of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Influenza vaccination prevents people from influenza-related diseases and thereby mitigates the burden on national health systems when COVID-19 circulates and public health measures controlling respiratory viral infections are relaxed. However, it is challenging to maintain influenza vaccine services as the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to disrupt vaccination programmes in many countries during the 2020/21 winter. We summarise available recommendations and strategies on influenza vaccination, specifically the changes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We searc

Access, Utilization, and Quality of Behavioral Health Integration in Medicaid Managed Care.

IMPORTANCE: Many states have moved from models that carve out to those that carve in or integrate behavioral health in their Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs), but little evidence exists about the effect of this change. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of the transition to integrated managed care (IMC) in Washington Medicaid with health services use, quality, health-related outcomes, and measures associated with social determinants of health. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used difference-in-differences analyses of Washington State's 2014 to 2019 staggered

Expanded Medi-Cal Coverage and Persisting Access Barriers for Latino Immigrants in California.

In California, health and community-based organizations serve as vital intermediaries, helping Latino immigrants navigate Medi-Cal (the state's Medicaid program) enrollment and access to care. The 2024 Medi-Cal expansion extended eligibility to undocumented immigrants who meet income criteria. Despite this policy shift, persistent barriers to care remain at the individual, insurance system, and organizational levels. This study examines Latino immigrants' navigation of health insurance and access to care in California. As part of the MIRA Latino study, we interviewed leaders from 32 California

Labor trafficking in marijuana production: a hidden epidemic in the shadows of the cannabis industry.

Labor trafficking in marijuana production remains a concealed epidemic within the expanding cannabis industry. This abstract brings attention to the systemic exploitation of vulnerable individuals engaged in cultivating, harvesting, and processing cannabis. It explores the factors contributing to labor trafficking, including demand for cheap labor, inadequate regulation, and the vulnerability of the workforce. By compiling published cases, both in peer-reviewed literature and the media, this perspective piece investigates the extent of health issues experienced by labor-trafficked victims. The

Development of a COVID-19 alternate care site from ground zero: A nursing perspective.

The novel coronavirus disease SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) outbreak rapidly generated an unprecedented global, national, and state public health crisis with the need to rapidly develop alternate care sites (ACS) to care for COVID-19 patients within an overburdened health care system. A hospital care model ACS to increase the health care capacity, provide care for mild to moderately symptomatic patients, and offer local self-sustainment for a surge of patients was developed in Memphis, Tennessee located in Shelby County. We completed a temporary conversion of a large unused newspaper publication build

Recommended Reference Values for Risk Assessment of Oral Exposure to Copper.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database, the authoritative source of U.S. risk assessment toxicity factors, currently lacks an oral reference dose (RfD) for copper. In the absence of such a value, various health-based reference values for copper are available for use in risk assessment. We summarize the scientific bases and differences in assumptions among key reference values for ingested copper to guide selection of appropriate values for risk assessment. A comprehensive review of the scientific literature best supports the oral RfD
