Cardiac neoplasms are a diagnostic challenge on many levels. They are rare, their clinical presentation may mimic other much more common cardiac diseases, and they are at an uncommon intersection of oncologic and cardiac imaging. The pathology of primary cardiac neoplasms explains their varied imaging features, for example, calcification in primary cardiac osteosarcomas and T2 hyperintensity in myxomas. Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are heterogeneous neoplasms that arise from neuroendocrine cells, resulting in endocrine imbalances that impact quality of life and prognosis. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a tumor-suppressor syndrome affecting multiple organs, including the brain, skin, kidneys, heart, and lungs. To assess the toxicological and pharmacological effects of chemicals, it is important to know what kinds of neoplasms naturally occur in the early life of laboratory animals. In the present study, we identified three spontaneous hematopoietic tumors in three of 52 young female Sprague-Dawley rats used in a pharmacological study. These cases included two rats (Case 1 and 2) from a sesame oil-treated group and one rat (Case 3) from a chemical-treated group in the same single gavage study. The toxicity of hydroxyurea, a treatment for specific neoplasms, sickle-cell disease, polycythemia, and thrombocytosis that kills cells in mitosis, was assessed in repeat-dose, oral gavage studies in rats and dogs and a cardiovascular study in telemetered dogs. Hemodialysis is associated with an increased risk of neoplasms which may result, at least in part, from exposure to ionizing radiation associated with frequent radiographic procedures. Registered deaths from the vital statistics registration system of Lagos City, a system that was judged to be 60% complete, were analysed for the year 1977. Separate left ventricular and left atrial myxomas were detected with echocardiography in an asymptomatic young adult with a systolic murmur. Successful surgical removal of both tumors was performed without complications. The value of echocardiography in evaluating heart murmurs of uncertain origin is demonstrated by this unique case.
