Congenital hemifacial hyperplasia.

Congenital hemifacial hyperplasia (CHH) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by marked unilateral overdevelopment of hard and soft tissues of the face. Asymmetry in CHH is usually evident at birth and accentuated with age, especially at puberty. The affected side grows at a rate proportional to the nonaffected side so that the disproportion is maintained thr oughout the life. Multisystem involvement has resulted in etiological heterogeneity including heredity, chromosomal abnormalities, atypical forms of twinning, altered intrauterine environment, and endocrine dysfunctions; however…

Infant mortality, ethnicity, and genetically determined disorders in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality of ethnic minorities in The Netherlands (10% of the population) is twice as high as in the indigenous Dutch population. Causes of death are different for the diverse migrant groups. METHODS: Hospital records of nearly 600 infants who died in the four major cities between 1995 and 1998 were analysed according to the cause of death, ethnicity, and possible heredity. RESULTS: There was a four to five times higher proportion of hereditary causes of death in the Moroccan and Turkish population, compared with the Surinamese/Antillians and indigenous Dutch. CONCLUSIONS…

[Pregnancy and labor in chronic anterior horn lesion].

This is the case of a 35-year old woman who suffers from a chronic form of spinal muscular atrophy and who has successfully completed four pregnancies between 1982 and 1987. After a short discussion of etiology, pathology, heredity and the differential diagnosis we describe the obstetric problems of our patient. The pregnancies were mainly aggravated by recurrent cystitis. In all the four deliveries the patient had to undergo cesarean section followed by severe lung problems. After the third pregnancy the patient had a nephrectomy cause of a pyonephrosis. We could not see an aggravation of the…

Telangiomas were only present in the habitual nose-bleeders. Heredity seems to be important in explaining the occurrence of varicose vessels as well as telangiomas in habitual nose-bleeders.

On the genetics of the Rett syndrome.

Ever since its recognition as a separate disease, the Rett syndrome has been reported to afflict girls only. For this reason, heredity has consistently remained at the forefront of discussions regarding putative causes. On account of the gravity of the disorder and the want for adequate therapy, the clarification of its genesis is of great practical importance in consideration of the possibility of descendants. J Wahlström reports a breakpoint at Xp22 in two sisters with the disease and in their healthy mother. This finding is questionable as being typical of the syndrome in light of recent ch…

Intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of neuronal development: relation to infantile autism.

This paper attempts to view the autistic syndrome in the context of a disorder of brain development. The authors review some of the known or suspected causes of the autistic syndrome: maternal rubella, metabolic diseases, and heredity. Some basic principles of cellular neuroanatomy and chemical neurotransmission are sketched. The stages of human brain development from neurulation through histogenesis, cell migration, and elaboration of dendritic trees and axonal projections are described. The authors conclude that there are a limited number of developmental loci that could be disrupted and lea…

Genetic Dilated Cardiomyopathy: A Review.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a leading cause of nonischemic heart failure. Genetic causes are identifiable in 25% to 30% of patients. Do you know this syndrome? Type 2 benign symmetric lipomatosis (Launois-Bensaude).

A 57-year-old female showed bulky, loose tumors, which progressively spread to her arms, anterior chest, and back. She reported dysphagia and dyspnea after mild exertion. She denied alcohol consumption. CT scan of her chest showed no internal lesions. Benign symmetric lipomatosis is a rare syndrome, clinically described as multiple nonencapsulated lipomas of various sizes and symmetrical distribution. This syndrome has three known phenotypes; in type 2 (Launois-Bensaude syndrome), lesions occur primarily on the shoulders, upper arms, and chest, and is unrelated to alcoholism. It causes aesthet
