Childhood Sexual Abuse and Sociodemographic Factors Prospectively Associated with Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration Among South African Heterosexual Men.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence directed at women by men continues to be a global concern. However, little is known about the factors associated with perpetrating intimate partner violence among heterosexual men. PURPOSE: History of childhood sexual abuse and other sociodemographic variables were examined as potential factors associated with severe intimate partner violence perpetration toward women in a sample of heterosexual men in South Africa. METHODS: Longitudinal logistic generalized estimating equations examined associations of childhood sexual abuse and sociodemographic variabl

Child Sexual Abuse and Negative Affect as Shared Risk Factors for Sexual Aggression and Sexual HIV Risk Behavior in Heterosexual Men.

Previous research has suggested that sexually aggressive behavior and sexual HIV risk behavior are associated. Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a well-established risk factor for both types of problematic sexual behavior. Negative affect (i.e., anxiety, depression, and anger) is a less well-studied risk factor, but it has been theorized to relate to both sexual aggression and HIV risk behavior. Thus, this study sought to (1) confirm the relationship between sexual aggression and HIV risk behavior, (2) establish CSA and negative affect as shared risk factors for sexual aggression and HIV risk be

Prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium and other sexually transmitted infections causing urethritis among high-risk heterosexual male patients in Estonia.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STI, including Mycoplasma genitalium, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis) among high-risk heterosexual male patients and to clarify their potency to cause complaints and inflammation. METHODS: The study group included 825 men (18.0-49.5 y) consulting andrologist at Tartu University Hospital (Estonia) due to subjectively perceived risk of STI. Patients completed STI risk behaviour questionnaire. First voided urine was analysed for white blood cells and STIs. RESULTS: In total 1

Higher rates of triple-class virological failure in perinatally HIV-infected teenagers compared with heterosexually infected young adults in Europe.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the time to, and risk factors for, triple-class virological failure (TCVF) across age groups for children and adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV infection and older adolescents and adults with heterosexually acquired HIV infection. METHODS: We analysed individual patient data from cohorts in the Collaboration of Observational HIV Epidemiological Research Europe (COHERE). A total of 5972 participants starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) from 1998, aged < 20 years at the start of ART for those with perinatal infection and 15-29 years for

HIV and Hepatitis C Virus Infection and Risk Behaviors Among Heterosexual, Bisexual, and Lesbian Women Who Inject Drugs in Australia.

PURPOSE: Women who inject drugs (WWID) are vulnerable to a range of harms, including exposure to sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, abusive relationships, physical and sexual violence and mental health issues. Lesbians and bisexual women are at greater risk than heterosexual women for substance use disorders. This study aimed to compare a large sample of heterosexual, bisexual, and lesbian WWID and to identify correlates of sexual orientation. METHODS: The Australian Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) Survey is an annual cross-sectional survey. People who inject drugs (PWID) who a

Gonococcal tenosynovitis in two HIV-infected heterosexual men: delayed diagnoses following negative urine nucleic acid amplification testing.

With recent increases in annual gonorrhoea incidence and disproportionately high infection rates amongst men who have sex with men, the clinical picture of disseminated gonococcal infection is changing. We present two cases where consideration of, and investigation for, disseminated Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection provided the answer when routine inpatient diagnostics had been unsuccessful.

Substance use patterns and factors associated with changes over time in a cohort of heterosexual women at risk for HIV acquisition in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is associated with HIV sexual risk behaviors, yet few studies have examined substance use patterns longitudinally. We evaluated the types and frequency of substances used over a six-month period among U.S. women at risk for HIV acquisition. METHODS: Women reporting unprotected sex with a man in the previous six months and at least one other personal or partner HIV risk characteristic enrolled in a multisite cohort study and completed interviews about substance use at study visits. Prevalence and frequency of substance use at the baseline and six-month visits were com

Low uptake of HIV testing and no HIV positivity in stable serodiscordant heterosexual partners of long-term treated HIV-infected Thais.

The objective of this study was to characterize HIV-serodiscordant heterosexual couples and to evaluate acceptance for HIV testing and HIV prevalence in nonindex partners. We conducted a cross-sectional study with quantitative and qualitative components. Two cohorts of 1767 HIV-positive people were screened to identify heterosexual HIV-serodiscordant couples. HIV-positive partners (index) were administered a questionnaire; CD4, viral load (VL), and antiretroviral therapy (ART) history were gathered from clinical records. HIV-negative/unknown status partners (nonindex) were invited for a simila

Masculinity, condom use self-efficacy and abusive responses to condom negotiation: the case for HIV prevention for heterosexual African-American men.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the role of masculinity and perceived condom use skills in African-American men's abusive response to female partners' condom requests. METHODS: Eighty African-American men aged 18-29 years completed measures on sexual behaviour, responses to condom requests, condom use self-efficacy and other masculine constructs. Men also were tested for sexually transmissible infections. RESULTS: Men's condom use self-efficacy explained 16.5% of the variance in abusive response to condom requests, beyond demographics and masculine constructs. The full model accounted for 63

Pilot evaluation of the Making Employment Needs [MEN] count intervention: addressing behavioral and structural HIV risks in heterosexual black men.

Few community-based HIV interventions exist for Black men at heterosexual risk for HIV. None focus on structural HIV risks such as unemployment and unstable housing. This study involved a pilot evaluation of the MEN (Making Employment Needs) Count HIV intervention, a three session peer counselor-delivered program of HIV risk reduction and gender-equity counseling, and employment and housing case management. A single-arm intervention trial of MEN Count was conducted with Black men recruited from a community men's clinic and social services program. Eligible men were those who reported two or mo

Alcohol and drug use among sexual minority college students and their heterosexual counterparts: the effects of experiencing and witnessing incivility and hostility on campus.

PURPOSE: Research suggests that discrimination contributes to increased substance use among sexual minorities. Subtle discrimination and witnessing mistreatment, however, have received little attention. Using minority stress theory as a conceptual framework the authors examined the intersection of sexual orientation, experiencing and witnessing incivility and hostility, and students' alcohol and drug use. The authors hypothesized that experiencing/witnessing incivility/hostility would mediate the relationship between sexual minority status and drinking and drug use, as well as problematic use

Circumcision and penile human papillomavirus prevalence in human immunodeficiency virus-infected men: heterosexual and men who have sex with men.

Male circumcision is associated with a lower risk of penile human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) uninfected men. Few studies have evaluated the role of male circumcision in penile HPV infection in HIV-infected men. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between male circumcision and the prevalence of penile HPV infection among HIV-infected men-both men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual men. Samples from 706 consecutive men included in the CARH-MEN cohort (overall 24% circumcised: 26% of MSM, 18% of heterosexual men)

Survey of reverse transcriptase from the heterosexual epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 CRF01_AE in Thailand from 1990 to 2000.

Genetic diversity of the HIV-1 envelope gene has shown a steady increase over time in the Thai and other regional epidemics. A serial survey of subtype CRF01_AE polymerase gene (RT) diversity in Thailand was performed, using 48 novel and 15 reported sequences covering the period 1990--2000. These sequences were gathered from individuals whose sole risk factor for infection was heterosexual contact. By contrast to envelope, diversity was low and, despite a 40% increase early in the epidemic, has remained static since 1996. These results indicate that epidemic HIV-1 may be constrained within def

Is genital mycosis associated with HIV risk behaviors among heterosexuals? ACSF Investigators. Analyse des comportements sexuels en France.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined in both sexes whether genital mycosis is as strongly associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) sexual risk behavior as are other sexually transmitted diseases. METHODS: Heterosexuals in the French National Survey of Sexual Behavior who reported a history of either mycosis or another sexually transmitted disease in the previous 5 years were compared with heterosexuals who reported no such disease. Odds ratios were adjusted for age, education, place of residence, and number of sexual partners. RESULTS: Among men, mycosis and other sexually transmitted d

Failure to detect silent HIV infection by polymerase chain reaction in subjects at risk for heterosexually transmitted HIV type 1 infection.

The prevalence of silent HIV-1 infections in subjects at risk of acquiring HIV infection by heterosexual transmission was assessed using a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. The two groups of risk subjects consisted of 92 female prostitutes and 43 heterosexual partners of infected individuals. Appropriate positive and negative control persons were included in the study. Serum samples were also tested for antibody to HIV-1 by an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and positive results confirmed by Western blot. PCR results in the two risk groups and the positive and negative controls were in fu

Disparities in Substance Use and Psychological Distress During Pregnancy Among Pregnant Bisexual and Heterosexual Females in the United States, 2021-2023.

PURPOSE: Bisexual women are an understudied population in perinatal health research, despite evidence of elevated behavioral health risks. This study examined differences in substance use and psychological distress during pregnancy between bisexual and heterosexual females. METHODS: Using pooled 2021-2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health data, we analyzed pregnant females aged 18-44 (n = 1888). Outcomes included past-month marijuana use, alcohol use, binge drinking, cigarette smoking, and psychological distress. Poisson regression was used to estimate risk ratios, both unadjusted and ad

Risk-Based Prophylactic Human Papillomavirus Vaccination of Heterosexual US Men Aged 27 to 45 Years for Prevention of Oropharyngeal Cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination of US individuals aged 27-45 years is recommended through shared clinical decision-making. To enable shared decision-making, we used a microsimulation-based state-transition model to develop and validate a risk-prediction model to identify heterosexual men aged 27-45 years at high-risk of acquiring oral HPV-16 infections. A risk model for incident oral HPV-16 infections had good discrimination (AUC = 0.73) and calibration (ratio of expected to the observed number of incident oral HPV-16 infections through age 45 years [E/O] = 1.01) in internal cross-valid
