Parasitic Protozoa and Interactions with the Host Intestinal Microbiota.

Parasitic protozoan infections represent a major health burden in the developing world and contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality. These infections are often associated with considerable variability in clinical presentation. An emerging body of work suggests that the intestinal microbiota may help to explain some of these differences in disease expression. The objective of this minireview is to synthesize recent progress in this rapidly advancing field. Studies of humans and animals and in vitro studies of the contribution of the intestinal microbiota to infectious disease are dis

Host immune response to Cryptosporidium parvum infection.

Species of the genus Cryptosporidium are protozoan parasites (Apicomplexa) that cause gastroenteritis in animals and humans. Of these Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium hominis are the major causative agents of human cryptosporidiosis. Whereas infection is self-limiting in the immunocompetent hosts, immunocompromised individuals develop a chronic, life-threatening disease. As specific therapeutic or preventive interventions are not yet available, better understanding of the immune response to the parasite is required. This minireview briefly summarizes the factors involved in the innat

[Interaction of bacteria of the genus Bartonella with the host: inhibition of apoptosis, induction of proliferation, and formation of tumors].

The bacteria of the genus Bartonella are the causative agents for earlier not diagnosed or re-emergent diseases of the humans, danger of which increases in relation with increasing number of persons with the disturbed immune status. Bartonellae are intracellular parasites, the places of their habitation in the humans and animals are the endothelial cells of blood vessels and erythrocytes. The modern data concerning major factors of the Bartonellae virulence and host-bacteria interactions were considered and discussed in this article. The induction of the type IV secretion system, effector prot

Pathogenic landscapes: interactions between land, people, disease vectors, and their animal hosts.

BACKGROUND: Landscape attributes influence spatial variations in disease risk or incidence. We present a review of the key findings from eight case studies that we conducted in Europe and West Africa on the impact of land changes on emerging or re-emerging vector-borne diseases and/or zoonoses. The case studies concern West Nile virus transmission in Senegal, tick-borne encephalitis incidence in Latvia, sandfly abundance in the French Pyrenees, Rift Valley Fever in the Ferlo (Senegal), West Nile Fever and the risk of malaria re-emergence in the Camargue, and rodent-borne Puumala hantavirus and

Bridging the gap: organotypic models to study late-onset group B streptococcus infection.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major cause of neonatal sepsis worldwide. Gastrointestinal colonization by GBS is an important risk factor for late-onset disease in newborns. Most studies of GBS pathogenesis rely on animal models with limited human relevance or use immortalized adult human cells that do not recapitulate the unique genetic and phenotypic features of the neonatal intestinal epithelium. Previous studies using tissue-derived human intestinal enteroids (HIEs) and induced pluripotent stem cell-derived human intestinal organoids (HIOs) to model host interactions with enteric pathoge

Balkan Endemic Nephropathy - Still continuing enigma, risk assessment and underestimated hazard of joint mycotoxin exposure of animals or humans.

The spreading of mycotoxic nephropathy in animals/humans was studied. The possible etiological causes provoking this nephropathy were carefully reviewed and analyzed. The natural content of the most frequent nephrotoxic mycotoxins in target feedstuffs/foods were investigated, in addition to their significance for development of renal damages in endemic areas. An estimation of the level of exposure of humans to the nephrotoxic mycotoxin, ochratoxin A (OTA), is made. The possible synergism or additive effects between some target mycotoxins in the development of nephropathy is also covered. The s

Prenatal exposure to drugs of abuse: methodological considerations and effects on sexual differentiation.

The pattern of results from the studies reviewed above indicates that alcohol, morphine, nicotine, marijuana, and possibly cocaine can influence reproductive aspects of the neurobehavioral sexual differentiation process to varying degrees. However, with the exception of alcohol, little is currently known regarding the effects of these drugs on nonreproductive sex-related behaviors. Future studies are needed to define the extent of perinatal disruption induced by each drug on the nonreproductive aspect of the sexual differentiation process. It is increasingly clear that the neurobehavioral deve

Epidemiology of dog-mediated zoonotic diseases in Algeria: a One Health control approach.

Globally, human-dog interactions cause significant social, economic and human health costs. Public health problems linked with dogs include mainly zoonotic diseases. Recently the concept of a global and integrative approach to improve the health and well-being of people, animals and the environment has been strongly endorsed. This concept, often referred to as One Health, also reflects the collaboration in the field of surveillance and monitoring. Because humans and animals often suffer from the same pathogens and share the same environment, a cross-sector approach integrating human and animal

Reproductive and developmental effects of phthalate diesters in males.

Phthalate diesters are a diverse group of chemicals used to make plastics flexible and are found in personal care products, medical equipment, and medication capsules. Ubiquitous in the environment, human exposure to phthalates is unavoidable; however, the clinical relevance of low concentrations in human tissues remains uncertain. The epidemiological literature was inadequate for prior reviews to conclusively evaluate the effects of phthalates on male reproductive tract development and function, but recent studies have expanded the literature. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review of th

Circumstances of Human-Bat interactions and risk of lyssavirus transmission in metropolitan France.

Since the elimination of dog and terrestrial wild animal rabies, bat exposures remain the only source of autochthonous lyssavirus transmission to humans in Western Europe. European bats have already been found infected with several lyssaviruses, and human-bat interactions represent a risk of viral transmission and fatal encephalitis for humans. In this study, we aim to better characterize exposures to bats in metropolitan France from 2003 to 2016 and to identify circumstances associated with exposures to lyssavirus-positive bats. Two complementary sources of data were analysed: 1/ data associa

Similarities and differences between dog-human and human-human relationships.

Most dog owners in Western countries regard their dogs as companions or family members, prompting extensive research on the human-animal bond. However, many studies rely on broad categories or single dimensions, such as satisfaction or attachment, which can oversimplify the complexity of these relationships. In contrast, our study employed a multifaceted approach, examining the dog-owner bond across 13 relationship scales and comparing these scales to four different types of human relationships to reveal the human-like roles of dogs within a family. Participants (N = 717) characterized their r

Interactive neurorobotics: Behavioral and neural dynamics of agent interactions.

Interactive neurorobotics is a subfield which characterizes brain responses evoked during interaction with a robot, and their relationship with the behavioral responses. Gathering rich neural and behavioral data from humans or animals responding to agents can act as a scaffold for the design process of future social robots. This research seeks to study how organisms respond to artificial agents in contrast to biological or inanimate ones. This experiment uses the novel affordances of the robotic platforms to investigate complex dynamics during minimally structured interactions that would be di

Enhanced Intrusion of Exogenous Airborne Fine Particles toward Eyes in Humans and Animals: Where Damaged Blood-Ocular Barrier Plays a Crucial Role.

Emerging data suggest a close correlation between ambient fine particle (AFP) exposure and eye disorders and pinpoint potential threats of AFPs to eye health in humans. However, the possible passage (including direct intrusion) and the interactions of AFPs with the eye microenvironment in addition to morphological and physiological injuries remain elusive. To this end, the likely transport of AFPs into the eyes via blood-ocular barrier (BOB) in humans and animals was investigated herein. Exogenous particles were recognized inside human eyes with detailed structural and chemical fingerprints. I

Evidence of presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in bovine tissue samples by multiplex PCR: possible relevance to reverse zoonosis.

Bovine tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, remains one of the most important zoonotic health concerns worldwide. The transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from humans to animals also occurs especially in countries where there is close interaction of humans with the animals. In the present study, thirty bovine lung tissue autopsy samples from an organized dairy farm located in North India were screened for the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex by smear microscopy, histopathological findings and PCR. Differential diagnosis of M. tuberculosis and M. bovis was made based

Epithelial and Neutrophil Interactions and Coordinated Response to Shigella in a Human Intestinal Enteroid-Neutrophil Coculture Model.

Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are recruited to the gastrointestinal mucosa in response to inflammation, injury, and infection. Here, we report the development and the characterization of an ex vivo tissue coculture model consisting of human primary intestinal enteroid monolayers and PMN, and a mechanistic interrogation of PMN-epithelial cell interaction and response to Shigella, a primary cause of childhood dysentery. Cellular adaptation and tissue integration, barrier function, PMN phenotypic and functional attributes, and innate immune responses were examined. PMN within the enteroid m

Trypanosoma brucei: comparison of circulating strains in an endemic and an epidemic area of a sleeping sickness focus.

Human sleeping sickness in East Africa is characterized by periods of long-term endemicity interspersed with short-term epidemics. The factors generating these huge changes are largely uncharacterized but probably reflect complex interactions among socioeconomic factors, ecological factors, and the movement and diversity of trypanosome strains. To investigate the role of trypanosome strains in the generation of these epidemics, we addressed two important questions. (1) Are the trypanosome strains circulating within a focus the same during times of endemicity and during an epidemic? (2) How sta

Character style and relational judgments in human-AI romance: trust, commitment, intimacy, and passion.

INTRODUCTION: As AI-generated characters become increasingly present in everyday emotional and romantic contexts, questions arise about whether they may begin to occupy relational space traditionally reserved for human partners. This study examines how character style (operationalized as holistic character conditions, each combining a distinct visual rendering, voice, and character background settings) and participant gender shape initial romantic evaluations of AI-generated and real human targets across four relational dimensions: Trust, Intimacy, Passion, and Commitment. METHODS: A 4 (Chara

Evolution of a Mosquito's Hatching Behavior to Match Its Human-Provided Habitat.

AbstractA subspecies of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, has recently evolved to specialize in biting and living alongside humans. It prefers human odor over the odor of nonhuman animals and breeds in human-provided artificial containers rather than the forest tree holes of its ancestors. Here, we report one way this human specialist has adapted to the distinct ecology of human environments. While eggs of the ancestral subspecies rarely hatch in pure water, those of the derived human specialist do so readily. We trace this novel behavior to a shift in how eggs respond to dissolved oxy

Global view on virus infection in non-human primates and implications for public health and wildlife conservation.

Viruses can be transmitted from animals to humans (and vice versa) and across animal species. As such, host-virus interactions and transmission have attracted considerable attention. Non-human primates (NHPs), our closest evolutionary relatives, are susceptible to human viruses and certain pathogens are known to circulate between humans and NHPs. Here, we generated global statistics on VI-NHPs based on a literature search and public data mining. In total, 140 NHP species from 12 families are reported to be infected by 186 DNA and RNA virus species, 68.8% of which are also found in humans, indi
