OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness, side effects and long term result of combination protocol of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and nitrocaphane (AT1258) on patients with malignant trophoblastic tumor.
METHODS: The chart and follow up data of 166 patients treated from 1979 to 1988 in Liaoning Province Tumor Hospital were reviewed. 136 invasive mole and 30 choriocarcinoma were treated by a 5-FU and AT1258 combined protocol. Their immediate treatment results, side effects and long-term follow-ups were retrospectively analysed.

Ultrasound imaging of the uterus and ovaries was performed on 41 patients after completion of apparently successful cytotoxic chemotherapy for invasive mole and choriocarcinoma. Uterine volume was calculated and the echopattern of the uterus and ovaries assessed. Forty-nine per cent of subjects had an abnormal uterine appearance and 20% had ovarian theca-lutein cysts. Two patients relapsed on follow-up but no predictive ultrasonic features could be established on uterine or ovarian morphology after chemotherapy.

CASE: The authors report a case with spontaneous renal hemorrhage caused by invasive mole. The diagnosis was gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD), with metastasis to brain, kidneys, and lungs at Stage IV. The patient was given etoposide-methotrexate-actinomycin D plus cyclophosphamide-vincristine (EMACO) treatment regimen for 11 times including three times with consolidation chemotherapies. Laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) + laparoscopic-assisted left renal excision + evacuation of the left perirenal hematoma were performed during the eighth chemotherapy.
