Fast skin healing chitosan/PEO hydrogels: In vitro and in vivo studies.

Due to its outstanding qualities, particularly when it takes the shape of hydrogels, chitosan is a well-known biological macromolecule with many applications. When chitosan hydrogels are modified with other polymers, the desirable function as skin regeneration hydrogels is compromised; nevertheless, the mechanical properties can be improved, which is crucial for commercialization. In this study, for the first time, bimetallic zinc silver metal-organic frameworks (ZAg MOF) loaded with ascorbic acid were added to chitosan/polyethylene oxide (PEO) based interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydr…

Compressible Hydrogels with Stabilized Chirality from Thermoresponsive Helical Dendronized Poly(phenylacetylene)s.

Fabrication of chiral hydrogels from thermoresponsive helical dendronized phenylacetylene copolymers (PPAs) carrying three-fold dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs) is reported. Three different temperatures, i.e. below or above cloud point temperatures (Tcps) of the copolymers, and under freezing condition, were utilized, affording thermoresponsive hydrogels with different morphologies and mechanical properties. At room temperature, transparent hydrogels were obtained through crosslinking among different copolymer chains. Differently, opaque hydrogels with much improved mechanical properties…

Injectable hydrogels for bone regeneration with tunable degradability via peptide chirality modification.

The degradability of hydrogels plays a pivotal role in bone regeneration, yet its precise effects on the bone repair process remain poorly understood. Traditional studies have been limited by the use of hydrogels with insufficient variation in degradation properties for thorough comparative analysis. Addressing this gap, our study introduces the development of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-responsive hydrogels engineered with a tunable degradation rate, specifically designed for bone regeneration applications. These innovative hydrogels are synthesized by integrating MMP-sensitive peptides, w…

Extracellular matrix mimetic supramolecular hydrogels reinforced with covalent crosslinked mesoporous silica nanoparticles.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a dynamic environment that is primarily built up from fibrous proteins (e.g., elastins, fibronectins, collagens, and laminins) and plays a vital role in tissue regeneration processes. Therefore, the development of supramolecular hydrogels that can mimic the ECM's dynamicity and fibrous structure is of great interest in regenerative medicine. However, such hydrogels generally have weak mechanical properties and poor structural stability, which significantly limits their potential applications. To overcome this drawback, we developed a new type of hybrid network…

Prevascularized spongy-like hydrogels maintain their angiogenic potential after prolonged hypothermic storage.

The chronic shortage of organs and tissues for transplantation represents a dramatic burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Tissue engineering offers a potential solution to address these shortages, but several challenges remain, with prevascularization being a critical factor for in vivo survival and integration of tissue engineering products. Concurrently, a different challenge hindering the clinical implementation of such products, regards their efficient preservation from the fabrication site to the bedside. Hypothermia has emerged as a potential solution for this issue due to its milder

Preparation and Application of Decanoic Acid/Arginine Hydrogels to a Transdermal Formulation.

We prepared a supramolecular hydrogel composed of decanoic acid and arginine (C10/Arg gel) and evaluated its application to a transdermal formulation. C10/Arg gel adjusted to pH 7 with 1 M NaOH aq or 1 M HCl aq provided a translucent hydrogel with a lamellar liquid crystal structure in the concentration region of decanoic acid ≥12% and arginine ≤9%. Rheological measurements showed that C10/Arg gel is a viscoelastic material with both solid and liquid properties, with elasticity being dominant over viscosity in the low shear stress region. The skin permeability of hydrocortisone (HC) and indome

Cartilage-Inspired, High-Strength, and Heat-Tolerant Lubricating Hydrogels by Macrophase Separation.

Hydrogels are considered as a potential cartilage replacement material based on their structure being similar to natural cartilage, which are of great significance in repairing cartilage defects. However, it is difficult for the existing hydrogels to combine the high load bearing and low friction properties (37 °C) of cartilage through sample methods. Herein, we report a facile and new fabrication strategy to construct the PNIPAm/EYL hydrogel by using the macrophase separation of supersaturated N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) monomer solution to promote the formation of liposomes from egg yolk l…

Hybrid assembly of polymeric nanofiber network for robust and electronically conductive hydrogels.

Electroconductive hydrogels have been applied in implantable bioelectronics, tissue engineering platforms, soft actuators, and other emerging technologies. However, achieving high conductivity and mechanical robustness remains challenging. Here we report an approach to fabricating electroconductive hydrogels based on the hybrid assembly of polymeric nanofiber networks. In these hydrogels, conducting polymers self-organize into highly connected three dimensional nanostructures with an ultralow threshold (~1 wt%) for electrical percolation, assisted by templating effects from aramid nanofibers, …

Placenta Powder-Infused Thiol-Ene PEG Hydrogels as Potential Tissue Engineering Scaffolds.

Human placenta is a source of extracellular matrix for tissue engineering. In this study, placenta powder (PP), made from decellularized human placenta, was physically incorporated into synthetic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based hydrogels via UV-initiated thiol-ene coupling (TEC). The PP-incorporated PEG hydrogels (MoDPEG+) showed tunable storage moduli ranging from 1080 ± 290 to 51,400 ± 200 Pa. The addition of PP (1, 4, or 8 wt %) within the PEG hydrogels increased the storage moduli, with the 8 wt % PP hydrogels showing the highest storage moduli. PP reduced the swelling ratios compared wi…
