BACKGROUND: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently avoided in mastocytosis, because of a potential increased risk for drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) due to inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase (COX), subsequent depletion of prostaglandin E2 and release of leukotrienes.
OBJECTIVES: Here, we aimed at determining the prevalence of mast cell (MC) mediator release symptoms triggered by NSAIDs in mastocytosis patients and the associated clinical and laboratory features of the disease.
METHODS: Medical records from 418 adults to 223 pediatric mastocytosis patients were retros

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Currently, there is strong evidence about an association between hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis (HVA) and mastocytosis. This review is focused on the most relevant clinical and biological features of systemic mastocytosis associated with HVA.
RECENT FINDINGS: HVA is a relatively common complication that modifies the natural course of patients with mastocytosis, particularly men with indolent systemic mastocytosis without skin lesions (ISMs-) in whom HVA can be the presenting symptom in up to around one-half of the cases. Patients with ISMs- associated with HVA are typically

Central Europe is largely safe from accidents with venomous and poisonous animals. The regions where European vipers are regularly found are shrinking. Today accidents with jellyfish and stings of venomous fish afflicted during leisure activities at the sea side play the dominant role. Life threatening accidents in Europe are mainly due to exotic snakes held in captivity. A system useful in daily medical practice is explained to classify and stage accidents due to poisonous and venomous animals. The important poisonous and venomous animals of Central Europe and the specific therapeutics, the a

Venom-specific immunotherapy (VIT) is considered for the treatment of patients with IgE-mediated systemic allergic reactions (SARs) after developing a Hymenoptera venom allergy. Tolerance is achieved in a majority of patients after only a few days or even hours of rush immunotherapy. After VIT discontinuation, the allergy returns in up to 15% of patients. During VIT, the majority of patients have local reactions at the site of venom injections. SARs to VIT are much more frequent in honeybee-treated patients than in wasp-treated patients. Increased baseline serum tryptase and increased allergen

Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) is a typical IgE-dependent allergy. Its diagnosis includes confirmation of the presence of specific IgE antibodies to venom allergens (vsIgE), and its treatment is based on developing of immunotolerance (venom immunotherapy, VIT). In most cases of sting anaphylaxis, vsIgE can be found, in some, however, the antibodies are undetectable, in spite of systemic reaction to venom, which may be due to low specificity of diagnostic methods. Diagnostic methods might be improved by the use of recombinant allergens which, being "uncontaminated" by other venom constituents,

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) has been linked to immunizations, viral infections, and occasionally to arthropods stings. Its association with scorpion stings has not been described. A 29-year-old man, who after being stung by a scorpion presented right hemiparesis and language impairment. Brain MRI showed subcortical bihemispheric lesion characteristics of ADEM and a bigger one compatible with Baló concentric sclerosis (BCS). Patient was managed with steroids, showing complete clinical improvement. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after 6 months showed cavitation of the bigger le

A 27-year-old woman suffered from anaphylaxis after being stung by Solenopsis invicta ants while she was handling wood from South America. The patient reported no previous adverse reactions to stings by other hymenopteran species. Intradermal skin tests with hymenoptera venom (Vespula vulgaris, Polistes species, Apis melifera) were negative. Serum specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E yielded positive results for S invicta (5.28 kU/L) and negative results for A melifera, Ves v 5 and Pol a 5. Immunodetection assays showed the presence of serum IgE against the Sol i 2 allergen. The patient had probably

Medicinal insects represent a valuable and still largely underexplored source of bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential for human health. Traditionally used in various cultural pharmacopeias, these insects are now drawing an increasing interest in pharmacological and biomedical research communities. Most medicinal insects belong to the orders Lepidoptera, Orthoptera, Diptera, Blattoptera, Hymenoptera, and Coleoptera. This review highlights key insect species with therapeutic relevance, exploring their roles in traditional medicine, the bioactive compounds they produce, and their emergi

Many types of viruses have been identified in parasitoid wasps and other Hymenoptera. Parasitoid wasps also transmit several viruses to hosts through the piercing ovipositors that females use to lay eggs. Most viruses that are known to be transmitted by parasitoids have large double-stranded DNA genomes. We summarize the range of interactions that have evolved between parasitoid wasps and the viruses they transmit. Some viruses are mechanically transmitted to hosts, which can reduce the fitness of wasp offspring. Others have evolved into beneficial symbionts or reproductive parasites that repl

Imported fire ants (IFAs) permeate many areas of the United States. The IFA allergy is a significant health problem for children and adults. Stings from IFAs cause pustules, localized reactions, and anaphylaxis. There have been at least 32 deaths attributed to IFA stings. Because of the difficulty with the extraction of venom from the fire ants, whole body extracts are the only commercially available serum for immunotherapy. Fortunately, whole body extract immunotherapy given conventionally or through the rush method has proven to be efficacious and safe. It is recommended for the treatment of

Chouioia cunea Yang 1989 is a parasitic wasp of many lepidopteran insects during their pupal stage, and has been successfully used to control pests such as the fall webworm Hyphantria cunea. Here we reported the chromosome-level genome of C. cunea by using short (MGI-SEQ), long (Oxford Nanopore), chromatin-linked (Hi-C) sequencing reads and transcriptomic data, representing the first chromosome-level genome of parasitic wasps of the family Eulophidae. The total assembly length is 171.99 Mb, containing 6 pesudo-chromosomes with a GC content of 36.89% and the scaffold/contig N50 length of 31.70/

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is considered the only treatment capable of modifying the natural history of allergic respiratory disorders. The possible adverse events related to AIT have, until now, limited its use to mild and controlled asthma. The pre-administration or concomitant treatment of AIT and omalizumab (an anti-IgE humanized antibody), recommended for the treatment of severe allergic asthma, could be useful in reducing the adverse events due to AIT and to allow its use in patients with more severe or uncontrolled asthma. AIT/omalizumab combination has been explored in a few

In a retrospective study, all cases of anaphylactic shock (AS) occurring in a hospital catchment area during a 13-year period were analysed. Twenty cases were found, giving an incidence of 3.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year, and one patient died. The precipitating agents were penicillin (7 cases), aspirin (3), food (2), and bee or wasp sting (8). The drugs had all been given orally. Penicillin-related AS was much commoner than its incidence reported by the Danish national health authorities. In three cases, previous anaphylactic reactions had occurred to the agent in question. We concl

As classic examples of adaptive evolution, insect mimicry and masquerade have been studied extensively for more than a century. Both phenomena protect insects from predators and are widely observed in nature. Previous research on phenotypic, genetic, phylogenetic, and behavioral aspects has laid a solid foundation for in-depth investigations. Recent advances in genomic data resources, analytical methodologies, and gene-editing tools have greatly facilitated the elucidation of the genetic and developmental mechanisms underlying insect mimicry and masquerade. This review provides a comprehensive

Cryopreservation protocols have been developed for eggs of Diptera, Lepidoptera, and Hymenoptera; however, for Heteroptera, such as Podisus nigrispinus Dallas, 1851 (Pentatomidae), no procedures have been described yet. The objective of this study was to evaluate the processes of dechorionation and permeabilization on the viability of eggs of P. nigrispinus with different embryonic ages. In the laboratory, embryos of 24, 48, 72, and 96 h of age were submitted to sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite, isopropyl, and hexane solutions for dechorionation and permeabilization. The experiment was ca

Due to intensively growing international tourism, increasing numbers of people leave for countries with hot climates, where various threats for human health and life exist. Besides climatic and sanitary conditions, a rich fauna, represented by predators and venomous animals, can be included. Based on available world literature and their own observations, the authors present the threats that a tourist can possibly encounter whilst relaxing on the beach or during recreational diving in tropical waters. When staying in water, a large threat is posed by marine fish of prey (sharks, barracuda, mura

Sperm displacement is a sperm competition avoidance mechanism that reduces the paternity of males that have already mated with the female. Direct anatomical sperm removal or sperm flushing is known to occur in four insect orders: Odonata, Orthoptera, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera. In a fifth order, Dermaptera (earwigs), I found that the virga (the elongated rod of the male genitalia) of Euborellia plebeja seems to be used to remove rival sperm from the spermatheca (a fine-tubed female sperm storage organ). In this species, copulation lasted on average 4.6 minutes, during which time the male inser

Snakes of the families Viperidae and Elapidae are responsible for the high incidence of morbidity and mortality after snake bites in countries of West Africa, the Indian subcontinent, South-East Asia, New Guinea and Latin America. Envenoming can cause local effects, notably tissue necrosis; and systemic effects, including paralysis, haemostatic disturbances, shock, increased capillary permeability, myocardial damage, rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure. Specific hyperimmune serum (antivenom) is the mainstay of medical treatment for severe envenoming. Ancillary treatments such as assisted ve

Systemic anaphylaxis is an acute allergic emergency resulting from generalized mast cell degranulation. In the United States, it is estimated that anaphylaxis accounts for about 500 deaths each year. Hymenoptera-sting hypersensitivity is one of the most common causes of systemic anaphylaxis. The authors report a case of a healthy 26-year-old man who developed acute anaphylaxis after a bee sting, could not be resuscitated, and died within 1 hour. At autopsy, performed 14 hours after the event, the only pathologic findings were laryngeal edema and congestion of lung. Postmortem tryptase levels i
